Strategic title Pokemon Unite announced for Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms

The Pokemon Company today unveiled a new game in the Pokemon franchise titled Pokemon Unite which is due out on both mobile and Nintendo Switch. It resembles strategy tiles such as DOTA and League of Legends. The developers behind the game are Tencent’s TiMi Studios and the game pits teams of five against each other for strategic Pokemon battles. The release date for the game wasn’t revealed, but it was announced to be a free to start title! Check out the trailer below.

“Today during a Pokémon Presents video presentation, Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, unveiled Pokémon UNITE, a new game for the Nintendo Switch™ system and mobile devices. Pokémon UNITE is being developed in partnership with Tencent Games’ TiMi Studios.

Pokémon UNITE is the first strategic Pokémon team battle game. Players face off against each other in five-on-five team battles. During these battles, players will cooperate with teammates to catch wild Pokémon, level up and evolve their own Pokémon. They will need to defeat their opponents’ Pokémon while trying to earn more points than the opposing team within the allotted time. Pokémon UNITE will be free-to-start.”

    1. They just can’t announce Pokemon Gen 4 remake right now, otherwise, we will have to wait for a single year and a half to predict what cool features it has to offer. That’s why they needed to save some Gen 4 remake project for next year!

    1. But the choice wasn’t between this and remake of DP, as Tencent wouldn’t be developing that, and Game Freak are tied up with DLC this year and certainly wouldn’t be releasing Gen IV remakes to compete with themselves. So the choice was this or nothing, not this or Gen IV remakes.

  1. Game Freak never said they will be remaking any game. How delusional people get, still amazes me chaps. Game on, you have a backlog of amazing games.

    Eat you heart out! Nintendo!

    F= MA.

  2. Gonna be a hot minute before they decide to show us another mainline game I think, the expansions clearly took that spot for this year

  3. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

    It’s LOL.

    1. You’re literally saying “I hope this game fails,” meaning that you don’t care if anyone else likes the game or is looking forward to it. He’s saying stop being toxic because you’re being toxic. It was a three-word comment and you think he’s white knighting the company? That’s a different topic he’s not even speaking on buddy.

      1. Due to GO bringing so much revenue, TPCi put a lot of time and dedication into making mobile games and that market isn’t known for their quality. In fact, they put so much faith in the mobile market that they told Gamefreak to hold off from making Sword and Shield because they were very uncertain if the system would be successful. In my opinion they are partially what’s bringing the downfall to the series, so I hope that it fails for that very reason. You’re entitled to your opinion on whether or not you yourself can enjoy this game as I am for wanting it to fail. You don’t see me replying to other peoples’ comments that remain optimistic in some way, but every time the company has been making decisions that I dislike recently I get many people telling me I’m in the wrong. So who’s the toxic one here, someone expressing their opinion, or somebody bashing someone who thinks differently from them?

      2. He expressed to you that you’re being toxic and you should stop. And you expressed to him that he’s white knighting from that comment alone. Therefore, he’s toxic?

He’s not saying you can’t speak for yourself dude, nor is he defending The Pokemon Company as you claimed on zero ground to base that on. He’s just saying don’t be toxic. In fact, that was his exact wording.

      3. It’s because the Pokemon fanbase has a tendency to call you toxic if you attack the games in any way, and I’m so used to this that I thought he was doing it solely because of that. And yes, I wasn’t being toxic because I wasn’t lashing out at anyone just because they expressed excitement, but I’ve seen some sort of response from people every time I’ve expressed disappointment. Sorry for assumptions, but I still believe not letting someone express their opinions like this is wrong.

      4. Lmfao you’re an idiot 😂 I can see you being an entitled prick. “My opinion, my opinion, my opinion…. oh I understand you have your opinion but MY OPINION IS MY OPINION.” Word of advice, opinions change and are relative to what knowledge you have at the moment, people can change their opinions, heck you can change your opinion. Stop being so entitled and open your mind up to learning why people have their opinions and if you’re so anchored on your opinion why don’t you explain yourself in a civil manner, maybe that way you won’t get people calling you toxic. It’s funny actually when The @DonDon tried to explain the situation to you in a reasonable manner you still tried to justify your toxicity by saying how other people call you toxic, surprise surprise maybe that’s because YOU ARE TOXIC. Learn B

      5. I might’ve been eccentric in my response to the first guy, but I was telling my stance calmly afterwards, and I even apologized later. Dondon wasn’t in the wrong either with anything he said either, he just misunderstood what I meant from my initial comment just like how I misunderstood the response. You however are the exact type of person who I have a problem with. I was in the wrong for jumping the gun and lashing out so quickly, but why do I have to change my opinion on mobage or how people should express their opinions without getting attacked?

    2. It’s not my cup of tea either. I can respect that others like it, and when people starts talking about LoL or something, I just nod and jabber with it so we can talk about something else xD But personally it’s too competitive for me, and you have to play it “the right way” or else you’ll hear it.

  4. This game is clearly for a Chinese market. I wonder if its purpose is to combat the myriad of similar-looking Pokemon clones, or to add one more to the pile.

  5. I’m excited for this game. I’m sorry to those that were disappointed in the reveal. I understand why.

The Pokemon Company needs to do a better job at understanding what majority of their fans want or expect of them.

  6. Met with thunderous appall.
Seems a little tone deaf to build up a week of anticipation by making this one game have its own presentation, I think this could’ve been plastered onto to last week’s with no issue.
Not that I was expecting or even wanting a new game or remake announcement. I would hate for them to half ass Gen 4 as bad as they have Sword/Shield, though I can’t really imagine a world where any mainline Pokemon game delivers anymore, at least not where TPC’s priorities are at nowadays.

At least Namco’s making Pokemon Snap, so the franchise isn’t completely dead to me. Just a shame that Snap is an exception to the rule that are yearly mobile games and low-quality mainline titles.

Also, anyone else here sick of the “Pokemon brings people together” trailers they make for like every single presentation.

    1. I hate the “Pokemon brings people together” trailers too. Acknowledging that Pokemon has had a positive impact on people’s lives and the gaming community is stupid, amirite?

      1. Imagine needing to make countless trailers to remind people how popular your popular thing is.
The first one they did was pretty impactful from what I remember…
What’re we at now? 5 or 6? Bit less impactful.
Don’t really need a reminder on how great Pokemon is, especially when it isn’t all that great nowadays.

      2. Imagine being so upset about a game reveal that you start going off on things that have little to no significance.

Honestly, who cares if that’s in the trailer? Do people watch the trailer and see those parts and go “Don’t even show me the game now. I’m done.” No. It’s fundamental marketing and happens ALL THE TIME WITH ALL COMPANY MARKETING. Why do you think slogans exist?

You’re just overly upset. Accept that The Pokemon Company disappointed you, just like they and Game Freak have to many others multiple times in the past. I don’t know why people hype themselves up when The Pokemon Company and Game Freak have both done this before.

Remember Pokemon Let’s Go P/E’s reveal? Yeah. That went over well.

        1. I mean, that’s precisely why I added it to the end. Hence ‘also’.
The game itself I have no real opinion on, I was just trashing on Pokemon as a whole.
If anything, you sound way more upset in this ordeal than I do, I’m just so disenfranchised with this… franchise, that I don’t really hold back when talking about it.

I’m basically just a hater at this point, lol, but there’s still a few things in the franchise that I’m in to.

I’m glad you like Pokemon Unite, I’m sure it’ll have its fanbase like everything in Pokemon. But I sir, have absolutely no investment in it or similar projects they do nowadays. Self-congratulatory trailers included.

      3. Regardless, it’s a harmless inclusion in the trailer. All companies do it. It’s nothing worth discussing. I suppose you could have that argument if you really want to, but as you said about yourself, it’s hating just to hate as it amounts to nothing; it’s an unproductive debate/conversation topic that does nothing for all parties involved.

Anyway, feel free to like the game. Feel free to hate it. I’m simply against the idea that “This reveal should have been amazing” when The Pokemon Company and Game Freak have literally done this before. You have to expect it by now. Or else you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment (imo).

    2. Personally absolutely fine with Pokémon Unite, certainly a lot better than rushed Gen 4 remakes that would (and will when they do come, let’s be honest) be as heartless as the mediocre Sword/Shield. Pokémon Unite looks alright, worth a go at least.

But really what I’m here to say is YES! So fed up of the stupid self-congratulatory trailers as you say. What does the point “Pokémon has been a popular franchise for a long time” have to do with a new MOBA style Pokémon game? And the awful music over the top of it, honestly, the whole thing is just an embarrassment. Get over yourselves – because there hasn’t been a properly good mainline Pokémon game since B2W2, which released 8 years ago.

  7. This looks fun as hell!!!! I like this. I love button mashing games!!! Oh yeah.. this looks way better than Sword and Shiels. 10/10. I saw the video and that was fun as hell. I want more. I want more!!!!

  8. This is one hell of a game one hell of a game indeed!!! I love it. I love it I love it!!!!!

Yes. I said it before I’m going to say it again. Pokemon Unite is my game I want!!!

  9. Everyone’s happy.
    The Pokémon Company? Happy.
    Tencent? Happy.
The Chinese people for getting a Pokemon game in their lucrative mobile market? Happy.
The Chinese government that Tencent will sell everyone who plays this game’s information to? Really happy.

Who cares if there’s a few disappointed fans, right?

In all seriousness, I realised that the Pokémon Company, Game Freak, and all the rest of em, are sacks of shit ages ago. Hopefully this will wake up some of the people who constantly defend mediocrity and lies.

    1. I mean, when Home announced they were charging $10 extra for no good reason they replied to people who expressed their disgust by saying “lol, just don’t buy a cup of coffee for a few days. This is literally a nonissue”. If you criticize any aspect of the series in any way you’re always going to have people come after you.

        1. Sorry, thought you replied to the other comment. People bought into that service because they had no other place to store their Pokemon. If I was given a choice to have the exact same amount of storage space without any of the other features, I would’ve chosen that one. It’s going to be quit a few years before I start using more than 100 boxes of Pokemon despite my rather extensive living dex.

  10. Not a fan of moba and a Pokemon skin certainly won’t change that.

Good for the fans i guess? (but the like/dislike ratio from the trailer tells me otherwise)

  11. Really Nintendo? Not only is it a mobile game , look how bad that frame rate is? And it is being made my Tencent so expect massive amounts of paid content lol, RIP DP remake

  12. I don’t think we’re getting a Diamond and Pearl remake for a bit. The DLC for the current game isn’t even all available yet, they don’t usually take attention away from the versions they’re currently supporting. If there’s one in the works, we likely won’t see anything til at least next year once Sword and Shield isn’t their focus. I still wish this Pokemon Presents was for Pokemon Snap over this game though. We’ve been asking for a new Snap or years, nobody asked for this.

  14. I have to say that I will give it a try, but I do not see myself playing it for very long. There are many other mobile Pokemon games that can be played with the free-to-start” model, and truth be told I am getting bored of it. This is great though for the target audiences; many people play games on their phones when they are bored.
