We’re just a few days away from the new year, and Nintendo has just revealed the top 30 most downloaded Switch games on the eShop in Japan for 2021. As always, this data does not include the sales of physical copies. The rankings for the year overall isn’t much different from the data that was released for the first half of the year; Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise continues to hold the top spot, with the sussy indie juggernaut Among Us following right behind. The biggest shake up comes from the November release of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, coming in to catch the third and fifth positions, sandwiching the Japanese exclusive Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban. How is the MH series so popular? I played 4 Ultimate for 10 hours and was bored for 9 hours and 45 minutes of that. I just don’t see the appeal.
Why would you put 10 hours into a game that completely bored you after only 15 minutes?
Well some of it was co-op with a friend, and the rest was the result of another friend constantly saying “it gets better later.”
It never did.
I know what you mean. I wanted to like Rise, but it felt like it was completely grinding without any of the rewarding feeling. My friends say it’s fun because of the serotonin you get from beating a big monster, but usually my reaction is “oh, it’s dead now?” after wailing on it for so long.
Why would anyone play Among Us, looks boring as heck and also looks dumb.
It’s actually really fun when you play with friends and talk over discord or something when it’s meeting time, at least for a few rounds until you figure out everyone’s tells. Sometimes things get really funny when they turn into screaming matches.

I’d imagine it has to do with the ancient human instinct to hunt. Plus, it’s fun to dress yourself up in the garb of your kills. Lol
Interesting to see that there is only two games from 2021. The rest are all older.
Also it seems unfair to me to include games that cost 2 dollars like Among Us in this list.
