Bloomberg: Disney CEO being pushed by deputies to turn Disney into gaming giant

Disney‘s presence in the video gaming industry is not as strong as you may think. The company frequently licenses its characters properties to other companies. The biggest example of this is their collaboration with Square Enix for the Kingdom Hearts franchise. However, it is rare for Disney to actually develop video games of their own.

Well, that might change someday. You see, Bloomberg is reporting that Disney CEO Bob Iger is seeing some interest within Disney’s ranks to increase the company’s relevance in the video gaming industry. In fact, Bloomberg said that “Iger’s deputies are pushing him to consider a bolder transformation of Disney from gaming licensee to gaming giant through, say, an acquisition of Electronic Arts. But, as with everything else, he’s been noncommittal”. Whether it stays that way remains to be seen.

  1. All I can say is they have 1 heck of a mountain to climb. Microsoft has tried something similar and while they have seen some success, they pale in comparison to Sony and Nintendo.
Disney definitely has the IP’s to make a massive impact on the industry but the question is whether or not they will actually put it to good use or end up just relying on popular IP’s for low-to-mid quality games.

  2. I was going to write out something sarcastic, but I don’t think the typing format could convey my tone properly.

I’m just going to say this: Disney should not be focusing on expanding, but rather fixing everything wrong in their house and getting back the trust of the consumers they’ve lost.

But that’s just my opinion, so on and unrelated note: what did everyone think of the final horizons DLC for Sonic Frontiers?

    1. I had fun with it, but the final horizons update felt incredibly unbalanced. The design philosophy was entirely different from the base game, so the difficulty spike did not feel even remotely earned.

I still enjoyed the difficulty though as I’m a huge “do it and learn while you’re at it” kinda guy, but I’d be lying if I said I had fun all throughout.

For example, I don’t think that the three new characters should have had skill trees. Sonic Frontiers was designed with Sonic’s skill tree in mind, but the new challenges for each character on a single island made process far more cumbersome than it should have been. I hope that in future games they would have each character fully separate with their own journeys (that maybe collide here and there and at the end), so that way we could have more fleshed out and focused character experiences. They feel great once they’re all fully maxed out on their skill trees though! (Except Knuckles’ glide 100% should have been designed after his Adventure counterparts. Oh, and give Amy more usage with her hammer!)

So, pretty middle of the road all around. I can’t think of a single thing that really got me hype while I was pla-
Final Horizons OST, Super Sonic 2, The Supreme End, Cyber Sonic

OK, Sonic Team. You win this time. That finale was fantastic, holy- wow. 👏👏👏

      1. Yeah I kind of agree with a lot of your points, although that Boss Rush was incredibly unbalanced I had to set it to easy mode and just stomp on everything in a very little sense just to get through.

And yeah: I’m Here (Revisited) may just be my new all-time favorite Sonic track 🤩

And as someone whose all time favorite game is Adventure 2, seeing Tails in the Cyclone breaking the game felt like a Love letter💖

        1. Oh yeah, the boss rush was part of what I was referring to when I said it was unbalanced. I have no shame in admitting that I turned the difficulty down from Hard to Easy for that part, lol.

Tails’ Cyclone was a huge highlight for me too. I always hear people talk about Tails’ missions in SA2 as being some of the worst, but I always enjoyed the slower pace for them. Cyclone Cannon was also one of the first things I unlocked for him when I was able to, but I was a little disappointed that there’s not much use for it considering Sonic is the best combat character. I did like using it to break the reinforced barriers though- that was satisfying. Tails being OP was a huge highlight for me; I love it.

      2. ese ese efe es un fraude!

I found funny and disgusting how a “sonic journalist” encourages people to support the franchise yet he didn’t dare to play neither the base game nor the final horizons update…he downloaded a save file for the steam version, can you guess who this individual is?

  3. Disney should forget about gaming, and focus on what they are good at, anything except gaming. Also one happy 100th birthday to Walt Disney studios :)

  4. They’re not going to have the commitment that it requires. If they took gaming seriously they wouldn’t have killed LucasArts’ gaming division or Disney Interactive, and the former was better at making Star Wars games than EA ever was.

  5. “We’re good at making movies and television shows and theme parks and cruise ships and the like, we’ve just never managed to demonstrate much skill on the publishing side of games,” CEO Bob Iger said when asked about Disney potentially dipping into video games once more.
