Ludwig vs. Nintendo: legal tussle over Super Smash Bros tournament modifications

Popular streamer Ludwig faced legal action from Nintendo for modifying a Super Smash Bros. level during his tournament, The Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series, in July 2023. Nintendo’s subsequent changes to tournament guidelines left fans irked. Ludwig’s claims of being “sued” surfaced in a YouTube video titled “I got sued by Nintendo,” where he discussed receiving a “Notice of Infringement of Intellectual Property.” This implied that his tournament had to adhere to Nintendo’s rules, including refraining from modifying the game. Ludwig explained that he wanted to freeze certain elements in the Pokemon Stadium level to enhance competitiveness and reduce luck-based factors. Despite the modifications, no significant updates have emerged regarding the matter. The incident has further stoked discussions within the gaming community about the control game developers exert over the use and modification of their titles in public events.

  1. I’m gonna be super honest I really just don’t care about affiliated or unaffiliated gaming tournament events, and all the drama that comes from these things are pretty dumb

    1. Jackson Bentley-Dyches

I agree. It’s so cringey and entitled to hear all of these people whining about Nintendo, when they couldn’t even be playing these games in the first place without them. Kinda feels like the content creators are just using this as an excuse to farm interactions.

    2. Honestly yeah. People get so mad over these things like it’s the end of the world. Creating drama over Smash/tournament stuff like this is super cringey. I get being annoyed but they blow it soooo out of proportion tbh.

  2. Nintendo needs to chill with fan game, game mods, and tournaments. Seriously, how is a game mod that makes a stage more competitive at a tournament really hurting them?

    1. You all need to stop licking Nintendo’s boots. Nintendo is wrong. Imagine buying a car and the company is like “Can’t drive to these places or use this brand Gas” or Buy a Burger and fries and the restaurant is like we will sue you if we find out you used ketchup on the food you bought” When you buy something it’s your property.

      1. You can do whatever you want in private. In fact I have modded many Nintendo consoles and games for my personal use over the years . Big public tournament with huge money prizes on the line? It’s just not the same.

    1. They’re suing him for monitizing on tournaments were he just so happens to use that modded stage. They had already sent him a C&D and he ignored it.

        1. I can admit when they’re in the wrong, and in many cases they have outdated views. With this one, they aren’t wrong. I’ve already told you why they have literally 180 on tournaments, and you keep insisting like a sad little child who doesn’t understand right from wrong. Since 2019 these tournaments have not, and will not be the same anymore.

  3. Look at the hilariously large rant you just made. The only one I see being a child is you. Can’t get that boot out of your mouth~

  4. Nintendo has to be one of the most insecure and out of touch gaming companies. Their mega bootlicking fans just eat it up for some reason. Modding a stage on an old game to make it more FUN and competitive does nothing to financially hurt Nintendo.
