SEGA is not happy with how its titles performed during the all-important Christmas period, saying that sales were “weak” and “sluggish.” Because of this, the company has issued a financial warning. One of the games mentioned by SEGA was Sonic Superstars, which didn’t perform to expectation, though it clearly faced the huge challenge of competing directly against the sublime, Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
“In the Consumer area, although we released some new titles in Q3, including Sonic Superstars, Endless Dungeon, and Total War: Pharaoh, sales went sluggish during the holiday sales season.”

As sad as it is to our Blue Boy not do so well, Superstars was not Sonic’s best foot forward in my opinion
I agree, I Liked Sonic Adventure 2 battle for Nintendo GameCube better than Sonic Superstars, I’m a 3D Sonic gamer than a 2D gamer.
I can understand that
Yeah this is not exactly how we wanted it to happen for the blue blur. I guess the series itself is not stepping up it’s expectations but it hasn’t lose its edge yet despite this game low sales.
Agreed 💯
Sonic Superstars was fun! Shouldn’t have been 60$ though. I bought it for 20$ 3 months later but I’m having a lot of fun with it
How did nobody realize that Sonic Superstars was a bad name? Also this really should have been a 40 dollar game. Like Mania was good enough you could have charged that much but they didn’t. But then they come out with a new game with a pretty but overall generic art style, and they charge a large amount for it. It’s kinda like… why? Why would I pay that much for a side scrolling Sonic Game that wasn’t developed by people who really get why the originals were great.
I mean what would you choose during the holiday between Sonic Superstars and Super Mario Bros. Wonder? If it weren’t in competition with Mario during the holidays it would have fared slightly better. Sucks it’s not doing good but I do hope their next game does better plus having it at the right price.
What did they expect? It was yet another cookie cutter Sonic game they’ve been making for the last 10+ years with no fusion between Sonic and Shadow, no Sally Acorn, no Chao garden, and you can either play as the outdated Classic Sonic or only play as Sonic. Sega deserves worse really.
What’s your opinion on the Archie Sonic comics vs IDW Sonic comics?
It was a classic era game.
Do you even know what you’re asking for? Also, what would Sally have added to Superstars.
But yeah, why do people REALLY dislike this game? Because it’s not Super Mario Wonder?
I would have bought a cheaper Sonic Mania 2 tbh. I didn’t buy Superstars. I don’t really have any plans to either.
“Slap shadow on him as a costume! Quickly!”
Nah but for real, I had some grievances with this game, but it was also a fun time too. If they would have made the bosses better then I would have considered this a solid 8/10 game. No mania or Sonic 3&K, but still alright
Why is that?
Why don’t I like the bosses? There’s too much waiting for them. You can only get one or two hits in every 20 seconds because the bosses gain invulnerability frames. Meanwhile the Genesis games let you hit the bosses as much as you wanted with them having zero invulnerability; as long as you could hit them while avoiding getting hit yourself, you could take down a boss in under a minute. That’s just not feasible in Superstars.
Other than that, I thought Superstars was fun. The level design was pretty neat, though it also felt a bit “safe” with nothing too crazy. It definitely felt like a new 2D Sonic game, but without too much that really felt new to it outside of the emerald powers. Those were pretty fun, but not really game changing. They felt like new monitor box power ups on a timer, and I only ever used them against Trip’s final boss to help cutdown on some of the waiting.
Another thing I couldn’t stand about bosses were some of the crappy insta kill moves the bosses have, like it really doesn’t help when a boss is pretty slow has so many invincibility frames, than you have a timer on your but.
One of main grievances is how they didn’t take the opportunity to make Tails’, and Knuckles’ super forms more distinct, and instead went the opposite direction. They got rid of Tails’ flickies, Knuckles is no longer pink, and even Amy doesn’t have a proper super form despite it being new.
I wonder why:
1- It released at the same time as Super Mario Wonder. That was such a dumb mistake I’m baffled they genuinely thought it’d be a good idea.
2- The game isn’t good. At all. The art style is bland, just like Sonic 4’s. The controls are heavy. It still suffers from the automated nonsense Sonic Team still thinks Sonic is all about instead of true momentum-based gameplay. Spin Dash is horrible. The Special Stages are some of the worst I’ve seen in a Sonic game.
3- it’s one of the most expensive Switch games I’ve seen. Not many people other than hardcore fans are gonna drop that much money for a “fine” Sonic game.
Go
Good I found the game to be one of the worst Sonic Games I ever played and I played them all. Go back to Mania.
I think they are trying to make a decent game compared to other 2D past Sonic games. This one didn’t take the cake because of the lack of mechanic that they added.
The article is lying to you all. It’s only mentionning Sonic for clicks, but MANY, MANY games in the same timeframe underperformed.
At the time it came out I had already pre ordered Mario wonder, Spiderman 2 and I had recently picked up a copy of sonic origins plus as I had been waiting for the game to receive a physical release on the switch plus get patched.
So yeah I didn’t have any capacity for superstars despite it being on my radar.
I wish it did better sure but the reviews for it were pretty clear that it was a good game just not a great game so there’s no rush chill for a sale
Whynrelease it during Super Mario Bros Wonder? That was stupid right there. Also why not give the fans what they wanted 20 years ago Sonic Adventure 3?
Oh really Sega? What a shocker….😑
It’s because it’s not very good. Close, but no Cigar.
They had some good ideas in the game, but there were parts that were just far too frustrating. Final bosses, for instance…
Ohhh, you mean people DONT want to pay £55 for a 3 hour game. If only someone knew.
That game should have been in the hands of Whitehead and the mania team and should have been half the price.
I hate the bosses, and they are the reason i cant replay it because of being forced to sit through animations. Stage complete in 2 minutes, 7 minutes to finish the boss because of waiting for animations.
Well lower the price and make the multiplayer split screen and they could have had a banger; it basically just becomes a race to the finish and if you aren’t skilled enough the Mario bubble system could have been optional to send you to the person in last or end of stage if everyone else is finished.
I actually liked Sonic Superstars and bought it myself to play just fine.
Sonic is underrated now.
