Square Enix interested to know how fans would like Chrono Trigger to be remade

Chrono Trigger director Yoshinori Kitase recently took part in the My Perfect Console podcast and asked about how fans would like to see the classic RPG remade. There is obviously many different approaches Square Enix could take, but Kitase was curious how they could best deliver it. The three routes Kitase discussed in the podcast was a port, a graphical remaster, or alternatively a remake similar in vein to the successful but expensive Final Fantasy VII Remake. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake for the Nintendo Switch was brought up with both the host and Kitase saying that it was a job well done. Kitase is currently busy with the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, but hopefully one day he can get round to bringing the original Chrono Trigger back to life.

  1. Well now, that’s a surprise to hear. I always get like Chrono Trigger was one of those games that Square Enix was too afraid to even acknowledge outside of ports. Cool to see that they’ve considered going as far as a full on Remake treatment

        1. We don’t need one. But I’ll be damned if they remade it like ff7, it would probably do better than it since the stigma of ff games generally push a lot of people away despite word of mouth.

        2. Those options, though. All I want for Christmas is chrono trigger running on the 2d3d engine (a la Octopath Traveler). Seems so easy, and not even crazy expensive. Maybe throw in some voice acting, if you want to get fancy.

          1. Square are incapable of producing anything of quality close to the original chrono trigger. Look at FF7. Fun game but full of children’s anime voices and ridiculous tonal shifts. Trigger had brevity but it also has gravitas. Something the current staff at Square don’t seem to know how to pull off.

        3. Why not? The original is already perfect. Why not expand on that? Worst case, we always have the original to love.

      1. I didn’t see lucca on the wiki list. Saw frog (named Cyrus did some reason), from CT…. and saw sergie, kid, harly from chrono cross.

    1. Oh yes please, launch it as 4 separate MMO’S that come out 5 years apart and include enough loot boxes to fund the whole series twice over with every launch. Nobody will ever see through that 🤬

    2. Fans have brow beat SquareEnix for YEARS for a quality remake and more sequels. We’ve bought the ports, even the bad ones, time and time and time again. Square used a remix of frogs theme once at E3 and players lost their collective minds thinking a remake was going to be announced that year, then practically burned the show down with negative comments when it wasn’t. I’ve recommended Chrono Trigger to everyone who likes RPGs for the last 29 years. I don’t know how much more clear we can possibly be after all this time short of literally marching in from of SquareEnix’s offices for a remake.

    3. I would make it like a modern dragon quest. You could make encounters have triggers the same, so us old timers can avoid them and new players will know where they are.

Then make the combo techs flashy and cool as hell. Like a quick lil scene, preferably quick like their faces flash as portraits on the side of the screen like the tales games do. Even have them happen intermittently to make you feel special when they happen like the incantations do in final fantasy tactics.

Everyone wants to see a modern x- strike or spire.

    1. Personally, I love all these remakes. New games are too ambitious and usually end up a buggy broken mess. I feel I can never trust these dime a dozen open world games unless its by FromSoft or Nintendo. At least a remake already has the story and the concept of gameplay already blueprinted before starting development.

    2. I wish it would be on multiple ports. Upgraded slightky like psp final fantasy iv AND fo one for other systems that way not all us poor folk can actually play an upgraded game I can’t afford a ps4 ps5 or final fantasy 7s new game but I can play the awesome mods which are great on PC from the modding community FF7 Réunion etc. Also I would have more bonus dungeons perhaps something extra with Cyrus in a time loop meeting him frog being able to turn human and him magus and Cyrus alive being cool so to speak more techs more monsters but yeah those examples.

    3. Tried that with FF16 and Forsaken, not well received. Face it, whine as you like, people don’t want new product. They want new skin.

    4. Kingdom Hearts 4, Final Fantasy 16 recently, might as well count Final Fantasy VII Rebirth since it’s an original story, whatever the 3rd FF7 game in the Remake trilogy is gonna be. I’d say they’re doing fine in new games. Successful or not, they still count as new. In fact, I think it was clever to have the name Remake be an actual in-game story thing with Sephy trying to “remake” the timeline.

      1. We’re saying the same thing. SE’s official term for it iirc is “2D-HD”.

I looked it up. It’s “HD-2D.” I was close but yeah it’s the same thing as Octopath, Project Triangle, and the other remakes they did.

  2. Final Fantasy 7 remake went overboard. They did this to capture not just 5he old but also new fan base. The result was a completely different take even story wise.As for taking a classic game like Trigger and changing game play also changes the game.Updating the graphics and cut scenes but leave the story add voice overs but pretty much keep it on a familiar approach.Do what they did with Matio RPG they gave you an option in many ways not losing the originality.Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes are great examples of classic retro but feels new in all respects.Designing an old game from the ground up is more costly and time consuming also.

    1. They should do it in dragon quest 11 style. It’s Toriyama art so dragon quest graphics and have the option to play it in 2.5HD graphics as well. No one would bitch about the graphics.

      1. HD-2D Octopath style, with an orchestrated soundtrack but also the option to switch to original OST. That’s the best possible outcome to me.

  3. Given how much of a garbage fire FF7 Remake and it’s DLC was, I hope they never remake Chrono Trigger. They’ll inevitably try to force in a bunch of plot ghosts to “make the story fresh and interesting”, or something equally stupid.

      1. Lmao, keep licking SE’s boots you pathetic shill. I’d happily play old games for the rest of my life over having to play the modern slop that most companies put out nowadays.
There is no “progress” in the modern game industry, it’s devolving if anything. Moronic zoomers like yourself know nothing about what makes a good game.

        1. Useless manchildren like you usually do the same things over and over and stay in the same soft place your whole life.

          1. And worthless zoomers likes yourself continue to poison society with your completely garbage takes.
You’re so utterly braindead that you actually defend a shit remake made by a trash company that’s basically nothing but pointless nostalgia bait that the fucking fanboy whales clap at.
Keep shilling for corporations you worthless stain on society.

            1. Fatherless behavior. Only wins you get are in old video games. I’ll make sure to tip you well when you deliver, little softie.

      1. He’s simply mad it’s actually a continuation of 7 with wibbly wobbly timey wimey shenanigans to tell a new, original story instead of a 1:1 remake. I personally like it as it’s a nice callback to Sephiroth’s final words in Advent Children. “I… will never be a memory.”

  4. Chrono Trigger as a 2.5D HD (octopath games style) would be great! (And a Chrono Cross remake as the FF7 would be good too)

  5. I loved the Trials of Mana remake. The graphics and gameplay update was perfect, and made the game feel like something completely new, while holding true to original concept. A Chrono Trigger remake in this style would make me so happy!

  6. If it delays the works of FF VII part 3, remaster is okay and release it in PS4/5. If no, simple remake like Trial of Mana is okay.

  7. Square Enix knows exactly what real fans want with a remake… They just won’t do it. Instead they force a CnD on Chronic Resurrection instead of hiring the team who was working on it, thus smashing all the fans dreams.

    1. Chorno resurrection is exactly what i would love to see out of a remade chrono trigger game.. The graphics were amazing and still had the feel of the game..SquareEnix really messed up issuing a c&d .. should have just paid them to finish the game…Would gladly pay $100 plus for a resurrection look alike.. a 2dhd would be a massive dis justice to such and amazing game..

  8. For one keep them STRAIGHT!!! There were no nutjob homos running around. So a remake needs to stick to its roots. No changes. Now either go 2dHD/HD2D like Octopath or some good graphics like hand drawn like unicorn overlord. I dont think this needs to be boosted like a full on FF7. But yeah updated graphics. Tons more weapons and a few more alternative realities. But beyond that it was perfect just the way it was.

    1. Afraid of what might happen if you were subject to a little Crono x Magus action? Well fear not, friend. Your secret is safe with us…

  9. Final fantasy stands alone in my opinion. I thoroughly found enjoyment in all of their games even the less popular titles. Now final fantasy 6 for me was and is unmatched and who wouldn’t want that one remade. That being said, I think Chrono trigger might be the only game that I would take over final fantasy 6, there’s just so much potential. For better or for worse, naturally.

  10. I’m usually satisfied with the HD-2D look for pixel art remakes but for CT in particular, I want it to look exactly like Dragon Quest 11. I couldn’t stop thinking about CT the entire time I was playing it. Not entirely the intensive effort of FF7R either.

  11. I think on the style of Octopath would be the best approach. Chrono Trigger is just perfect in every sense and shouldn’t be meddle with

  12. Remake it in an anime artstyle using Wild Arms 3 as a basis for the combat system. Imagine 3 of your teammates & the enemies running around the field. Wild Arms 3’s battle gameplay is honestly how I imagine a 3D style for Chrono Trigger’s combat to work.

  13. Preserve Toriyama-style in 3D. So like DQ8 and up. Wouldn’t mind it if they expanded some ideas (and deleted some others.) Not full on FF7R, but a considerable middle ground would be sweet. Never liked the Masamune becoming Mastermune (what a stupid name). Maybe add a flashback to play as human Glenn…

  14. I would love a remake of Chrono Trigger either in HD 2D like you remade the Star Ocean The Second Story that was good.

    1. I think a remake would be great…if done well. Definitely don’t change the story and keep the techs, maybe make the tech system more expansive so we can actually experience something new, within the same game. Don’t change it all up, keep it as it is, just modernize combat and stuff like that. Use Super Mario RPG as the example. Something new entirely would be nice, but these games created archetypes. I think a remake/remaster is well deserved. Put it in the 2.5d realm even. 3D would be fine if done well, people crying foul at changing it to 3D are insane, can’t be reasoned with lol. We’re in a new age and these types of games laid the groundwork for what RPGs are today, so quit cryin. Don’t like it, don’t buy it.

  15. Oh great, just another woke censored shit from Square Enix after the FF7 remake disaster. Personal, I wish this damn company goes bankrupt and is not able to make more dumb remakes with Sweet Baby Inc, but that is just a wish dream.

    1. You still play the games either way so sit back down little buddy. Personally, you dont matter to anyone so your opinion is pointless.

  16. This is cruel why even tease the idea if it will never happen?
Anyway what I would like to see is a remake but I would also love to see the game but in the style of the octopath traveler games. Main thing is keep the plot game had a great plot :)

  17. 2D-HD like Super Mario RPG remaster did it
Maybe show what happened to Schala
    Don’t touch anything else…
The game is perfect the way it is

For the love of God .. KEEP SweetBabyInc >away< from Chrono Trigger…
No D.I.E, no stuff like turning Ayla, Marle, Lucca into modern feminists, no LGB or Transing Magus or turning Johnny gay, no race/gender swaps… It doesn’t need any of that modernizing crap Sweet Baby Inc pulls….
We fans have been waiting decades for something like this so PLEASE don’t ruin it with modern ideology politics of a company ran by an SJW who’s only interested in inserting her politics in every game people love

  18. Chrono Trigger is about traveling through dimensions. We need to bring it into the next dimension. Chrono Trigger 3D Remake.

  19. If you keep the gameplay (Turn based), story, lines, and everything all the same, and instead just overhaul the graphics to current standards, you can take all my money.

  20. A graphical remaster ONLY. Leave the gameplay alone, leave the story alone, leave the translation and character designs alone. Update the graphics to be in the style of Dragon Ball FighterZ. All artwork revamped to look like that, include the anime cutscenes (and return Robo’s cutscene to the game), and all sprites and scenery updated to look crisp and clean. Dragon Ball FighrerZ is a GORGEOUS game, and Chrono Trigger looking like that would just be divine. Just imagine the double and triple techs with special animations akin to the supers of DBFZ.

  21. Would be nice to do a sequel instead. One where Magus is sent back through more anomalous time portals to various places in order to discover the source of them. It leads into an alternate future and we see Lavos threatened to come back, and even fight a memory of him, but the main boss is the one who wanted to bring him back. Just a thought!

  22. Hell yeah. That would be sooooooooo dope. Still one of the greatest rpg to this day. I play this all the time q remake like ff7remake would definitely put it on the map as one of the best.

PLEEEEEASE MAKE THIS A REALITY 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

  23. It will certainly be a challenge to do a remake of this highly beloved title. With the right team of people who share a passion for this game, it can be amazing. However it can go wrong for many people, if high expectations are not met. This is one of the best games ever made.

  24. I have been waiting for this moment my entire life.

If there was any one single game on the entire planet I could choose to remake, it would be Chrono Trigger.
(But my remake I mean leave everything the same but with modernized graphics and sound track)

  25. I would do a remake like Final Fantasy 7 is done. Do the whole game, the original ending being the first release, and then add a download pack with all the alternate endings, because they usually require the New Game+ feature anyways.

  26. Oh my gosh! Yes I would buy these games especially if they are remastered for all consoles! But please give us a remastered version of Illusion of Gaia as well but perhaps the entire trilogy that was not brought to America! Just like what happened to Mother 3!? Or the Earthbound trilogy collection?! Nintendo I guess just don’t care anymore especially for there Oldschool fans!? Sad but this is absolutely true 😢

  27. Erase Dalton destroying guardia. Remake Chrono Cross’ battle system so party members can have Double or Triple Techs. Limit the potential party members to six or seven from both the good and the bad guys.

  28. Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time. That being said, please, dear God, don’t do a FFVII:R style remake. We don’t need it. At all.

It worked well for FFVII because the technology didn’t exist at the time to properly create the world the original team wanted for FFVII. But Chrono Trigger is perfect. It is made exactly as envisioned. Let’s give it a graphical remaster at the MOST.

  29. I would love to see a direct update to graphics. That is it. If it played EXACTLY the same including the turn base play, and look similar in graphics to modern like 7 or 15, I would pre-order 3 copies. one for my steam, one for my PS5, one for my son’s steam.

  30. A remake like the fan attempt one a while back that Square shut down. In fact, that Exact one would be great! Hire the guy!

I’d also love to see a sequel with the same charm, the same care in the story, etc. While I liked Chrono Cross, it just didn’t have the same kind of magic.

  31. HD-2D would be nice and plenty would buy it but I think we deserve a full scale remake. A full on remake like ff7 would be phenomenal assuming they add content tastefully and find a way to modernize the art without loosing the. Charm.

Anything less than those two options would only sully the name.
