Nintendo has acquired Shiver Entertainment

Video gaming companies have been spending a lot of time acquiring each other recently. Nintendo has not really been participating in this, but that has now changed. Nintendo has officially announced that they have acquired Shiver Entertainment. They will be getting “100% of the outstanding shares” of the company.

If you don’t know what Shiver Entertainment is, they were previously part of Embracer Group. Most of their work as of late has been porting games. They were the ones that ported Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 to the Switch, and developed Scribblenauts Showdown. According to Nintendo, “Shiver’s focus will remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch”.

  1. Uhhh, the group that ported Mortal Kombat 1 to Switch?

If you don’t know what portends, I suggest you find images of the Switch version of MK1 to see how bad this might actually be.

    1. Didn’t they also do the port of MK11 which looks much better. Getting MK1 to run on switch itself is impressive. Stop

  2. “They were the ones that ported Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 to the Switch, and developed Scribblenauts Showdown.”

That’s not much of an endorsement. Let’s be honest, most people wouldn’t have heard of them before now. And when you think of the talented companies that fans and investors have recommended they buy like Platinum Games to Mercury Steam, this company is nothing. Nintendo pinching pennies again?

It’s also bad in another way. This studio don’t make original games, they churn out ports, and not very good ones either. This is a signal that Nintendo are going to rely even more heavily going forward than they already do on greedy, lazy, overpriced ports.

    1. The worst part being, people will still buy them. Will they sell well? No. But, it gives something for us (not all of us) to play while we’re waiting for something.

    2. They likely want them for their technical knowledge of the Switch. While these ports aren’t great, a wealth of knowledge goes into porting these massive games into what they become.

      1. Nintendo made Mario odissey which looks like a ps4 game while shiver ported mortal kombat 1 which looks like a ps2 game, I don’t think that’s the reason they bought them

  3. According to Nintendo, “Shiver’s goal will remain the same, continuing to port and develop software for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch.”

Uh.. either it’s a bad translation or it’s a major change in Nintendo’s policy… Since when do they let their studios develop for the competition??!

    1. There never was any console wars. It was all just a marketing gaslight caused by commercials in the 1990s.

  4. This seems good in the sense that this implies that Nintendo is going to take third party support more seriously for the Switch 2, but why this company specifically eludes me
