The United Kingdom, which is the largest video games market in Europe, continues to be adopting digital games at a staggering rate with Games Industry data revealing that 75% of the games purchased during August 2024 where digital editions rather than physical editions. The fact that we have no data caps and broadband speeds are reasonably fast is likely a big factor for the adoption. GSD data reveals that 1.74 million video games were sold in the UK during August, which Games Industry says is a slight drop of 1.5% over August 2023.
UK: 75% of video games sold during August 2024 were digital

Who uses non-digital these days – I don’t know any!
I don’t know anyone that doesn’t get physical. Digital is fine for games you don’t love, physical is what you want if you want to keep your games. Game companies are making it hard by going digital honestly. That means less people will buy their games.
It’s physicover… BILLIONS must lose ownership over their games….
The issue in the UK is we have literally 1 shop that sells games and most big retail shops don’t sell them. Amazon and Argos are quite a way to go for alot of people who just want the game so they go for the digital route.
I don’t trust these reports since we already have proof they usually end up lumping ALL digital sales together on a platform, not just the full game.
Well they aren’t wrong, they’re just misleading. Like you said, they lump all Platforms together, even mobile, that’s why the number keep rising.
Don’t get me wrong, physical IS on it’s way out, just not as fast as these reports make it out to be.
The day I can’t buy physical is the day I stop gaming (25+ years) . Play, trade in and move on is the way I roll (with a few exceptions). Only stuff I buy digital are indie games on switch. Each to their own of course.
The physical games fullfill my needs, have them on shelf for display indeed.
Physical has almost no appeal anymore. 🤷♂️
rong
Says you. Physical is still in very high demand. We in fact sell more physical copies now than we did 20 years ago.
The rapid rise of digital gaming in the UK shows a clear trend towards a shift towards modern gaming experiences, thanks to robust internet infrastructure and no data caps, although sales are down slightly year-on-year.
Wow, that’s a huge digital shift in the UK gaming market! Makes you wonder what’s driving it – convenience, price, or maybe just the allure of instant access? I wonder if there is a correlation with online gaming popularity and games like Wordle Unlimited that have moved the industry towards a digital format. Interesting trend to keep an eye on!
