Miyamoto hopes people refrain from dragging Nintendo into console wars focused on hardware performance

Legendary Nintendo developer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto has chatted with Japanese video game publication Famitsu about a range of subjects including the console wars. Speaking to the site Mr. Miyamoto said to the site that his hope when the next Nintendo console is revealed that “people will understand and refrain from dragging Nintendo into competitions like the so-called ‘console wars’ which focus on high specs and hardware performance (laughs). Nintendo will continue to use the various technologies available today to create things in a way that’s unique to Nintendo.”

Mr. Miyamoto also talked about Nintendo and technology, which the Kyoto-based company has lagged behind on such as online gaming, which first took off with the Xbox 360 in November 2005. Miyamoto told Famitsu that “Nintendo has a history of waiting for the right moment to release products, only commercialising them when we believe the timing is perfect.” Here’s the full comments courtesy of ResetEra:

“”If the goal is to preserve all of Nintendo’s past assets so that people can understand what Nintendo is, then it’s not just about the employees; we now have people spanning three generations who know about Nintendo. It would be great if those people could see it and understand what Nintendo is. I hope that through this, people will understand and refrain from dragging Nintendo into competitions like the so-called ‘console wars,’ which focus on high specs and hardware performance (laughs). Nintendo will continue to use the various technologies available today to create things in a way that’s unique to Nintendo. We’re not just limited to games; we’ll also be involved in films and will continue to create a variety of entertainment content. I thought this would be a good opportunity for people to understand that, and that’s why we made this.”

“I believe the most important thing is for various people to visit this museum and come away thinking, ‘Nintendo is a company that’s not at all related to the game industry competition or cutting-edge technology that people usually talk about.’ Of course, we conduct technology research. In the past, analysts and others have said things like, ‘Why isn’t Nintendo focusing on networking?’ or ‘What about mobile?’ or ‘Why aren’t you using cutting-edge chips?’ However, if people calmly look at the exhibits, they’ll realize that we’ve actually been working on those things all along. But Nintendo has a history of waiting for the right moment to release products, only commercializing them when we believe the timing is perfect. I think that becomes clear through the museum, and it helps build trust in Nintendo. For our shareholders as well, this serves as a kind of mid- to long-term perspective, showing that they can trust us to manage the company properly.”

    1. Be cool if Nintendo actually boosted power to at least run AAA THIRD PARTY GAMES… At least let them pad out the system so they don’t rely on bare minimum ports

      1. I don’t agree with that. I came to Nintendo because they offer something different to their competitors. If I wanted to play Assasins creed ‘24 I’d just buy a PS5. If developers make a game that can’t or won’t run on a Nintendo device, it is their choice of audience, because they could have had the switch in mind from the start.

  1. This has been Nintendos way for years.
However, timing of the statements feels like this is a precursor to Switch 2 being really underpowered.

        1. Cept now we know they shut servers down and all these games that required dlc patches and etc will just go poof…. And online focused games becoming useless

    1. Nintendo has not been in any “console war” since the GameCube. That was 20 years ago. No one has or is trying to drag them into it either. The fact that something so dilapidated would even come out of his mouth in 2024 is proof of how out of touch he is and that he needs to get somewhere and sit down.

What people are trying to do is “drag” Nintendo into the 21st century and make them realize that purposefully making your hardware underpowered is as dumb as making it overpowered. Both situations involve great risk. There is a happy medium where your specs are up-to-date within reason and you still can do whatever gimmick you want. If the Switch 2 is as powerful as an XBOX Series S, or even an XBOX One X, I’d be fine with that. If maxed out it is only as powerful as a PS4, they can keep that. The Switch 2 is their 10th generation console. Generations are defined by succession, not power-level. There ZERO excuse for a 10th generation console to only be as powerful a tech from 11 years ago that was underpowered THEN.

PS4-level in portable mode and XSS or XB1X in docked-mode, or bust.

        1. Nothing they said was “toxic” you derp. Are we just labeling anything with don’t like as “toxic” now days?
Get a life. Be an adult and just say what you mean “i disagree” it’s not hard.. you don’t gotta be a derpy dip about it.

      1. Honestly speaking.. the haven’t been in the console wars since the SNES if you wanna get technical.
When they were head to head with SEGA they pushed harder.
After that, you could see them making changes..
The N64 as capable as it was.. they ignored competition and didn’t include an optical drive.
Game Cube they tried to make look like a child’s toy..
Wii they took the gamecube and did some improvements.
And so on and so forth.
SNES was the last time they really gave it a hard push.

    2. I agree. I would have been fine with Nintendo sticking with a 16, or 32 bit system. They did wonders on how the later games turned out like FFVI.

    1. It’s amazing how childish these comments are towards Nintendo. Nintendo was ingored with more powerful console. Miyamoto is also full himself when right time no

  2. It’s smart from a business standpoint. The underpowered console has won a lot of gens in terms of sales.

    Software is always the key.

  3. People usually say “optimisation” this and that.. Sure, you can optimise a game to run well on given hardware but it usually involves cutbacks, plus why would you want to spend ages optimising a game when you could have better hardware that runs the game even better with only a bit of optimisation?

Optimisation is not a substitute for good hardware, it’s like the PS5 Pro using the same CPU as the original PS5, some games will not benefit at all.

    1. That’s like saying you don’t need to clean your room if you just tear down a wall to make it bigger.

… there’s still a mess no matter how much room you have to walk around it.

  4. That translates to: “we are not capable of doing better”. This is what people expect from technology, always better. If other companies can do better your company should be able to do it too. A device that can run as a portable and as a console is not something new anymore, so the Switch 2 needs to be better, otherwise, it’s going to born old already.

      1. 60+million and counting care about a $500 console though (PS5.) People also care about the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally, and the Legion Go. All those consoles are more powerful than the Switch and based on what Miyamoto is saying, what the Switch 2 will be also.

The Switch was result of Nintendo standing alone in a hot desert with their brand-name bottled water surrounded by a bunch of dehydrated people. Now SEVERAL people are in that desert selling their own bottled water. Maybe the brand name isn’t as strong, but to someone who is thirsty, they don’t care about the NAME. They just want water.

Switch 2 will not be successful “just because” it’s Nintendo. Only fanboys think like that. Casuals just want a hybrid-console and there are too many hybrid-devices out there and are on the way that are more powerful, have access to more games, have access to BETTER games, and do more than just play games. The Switch didn’t even have any direct competition until 2022. That is almost a full console cycle.

If the Switch 2 is weak-sauce, Nintendo is in for a rude awakening. Historically, Nintendo has followed up a successful console with a clunker.

        1. All of those handheld PCs pales in comparison to the Switch on unit sales number, and rightly so since they are more expensive than the switch lite. Also the PS5 is not that attractive nowadays since almost all of its games available on PC. Nintendo is fine as long as they make good 1st party exclusives.

  5. This is them getting us ready for PS4 power. And if its another hybrid device, I’m okay with it. Its a pretty significant bump from what we have. It looks close enough to current gen. And many games from the current gen had PS4 and X-Box One releases too, so there are tons of games that can get ported over from 3rd party developers. Having Steam Deck like PS4 power is just fine with me.

  6. Sasori Obinna: The puppet master

Obinna cannot belive xbox has lost the console war, obinna was sure it was goign to win the master race now am see how wrong am was, it is better to stay as far away as poissble from console wasr discussion.

  7. It’s all fun and games until certain developers decide NOT to bring certain games like Spark the Electric Jester, 3D Dot Heroes, Ultra Street Fighter IV, J-Stars Victory Vs., Kingdom Hearts (NON-CLOUD version), the FF7 remake, and Astro Bot to Nintendo consoles (in this case, the Switch). Not to mention Crash Team Rumble.

This is when Nintendo consoles being under-powered matters.

      1. more like a loss for nintendo owners, i want third party games on a new console, sure i buy nintendo console for nintendo games but getting some third party support is important

          1. I already do that, it’s not the same thing. a laptop is huge i don’t want to bring that around me, plus if i already have a portable console, why would i buy/bring another one?

          2. “Consoles have a single set of hardware that games are optimised to run on, even if that games chugs, its the best result the hardware can produce.

high end computers performance wise shit all over consoles, yet many games are not optimised to run on the thousands of hardware combinations computers can run with but that doesnt necessarily mean computers run games poorly.

if you build a computer that costs the same as a console, the console will out perform the computer, but a computer can do so much more than a console can, can you edit 3d models and make textures, edit scripts and code on a console? no, but that £500 pc is not going to play your modern games very well compared to a £500 playstation 5, the ps5 will shit all over that pc.

if you want games that run out the box with no issues, consoles are the winning solution especially if money is tight and you just want simplicity, but if you’re someone who does a lot more than just game, a pc is the solution.

I have a high end pc and a nintendo switch, id like a ps5 too but i cant afford and justify that much money for the two games id get for the ps5 (demons souls and bloodborne)”

      2. More like OUR loss, or more specifically, I LOSE, by not being able to play these games without forking over extra money (that I don’t have) for a second current-gen console (each time).

  8. Note to the editor on a small nerd error correction.

“online gaming, which first took off with the Xbox 360 in November 2005.”

The original Xbox, released in 2001, is more well known for making online gaming mainstream rather than the 360. While online multi-player became expected by the 7th generation, it was the 6th generation and the enormous popularity of Halo and Xbox live that made it mainstream.

Even so, online multi-player in console gaming goes back as far back as the Dreamcast.

  9. I can’t believe Miyamoto has been turned into a mouthpiece for Nintendo’s bad management. The only thing that keeps people coming back to Nintendo are the games. Primarily HIS games. It would be nice if they they ran on better hardware. Thats all we ask.

  11. Imagine wanting people to not say your games are horrible yet trying to patent everybody else’s games and mechanics. Oh boy!

  12. They can release garbage hardware if they want, that’d be totally fine if they didn’t also make it impossible for me to play the games I bought for their bad hardware on something more powerful by continuously shutting down years of emulation projects that finally put their games in a properly playable state. Not buying a Switch 2 after they shafted Yuzu and Ryujinx.
