Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer behind the excellent Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, has told Bloomberg that Square Enix is currently hesitant about over flooding the market with too many HD-2D games. The information was divulged when Mr. Hayasaka was asked whether he would take the opportunity to remake other Dragon Quest video games using the stunning engine. He replied by saying that it is currently a sensitive topic at the company, which even his supervisors are unsure of and are constantly mulling over.
“If we were to release too many games in succession, that would lead to people being bored of those games. On the flipside, if there’s too much of a span between launches, that can also lead to the series not seeming as vibrant and robust anymore. It’s a sensitive topic. It’s something that even my supervisors are constantly unsure and mulling over.”

And they should be. HD-2D games are unnecessary. 2D games are outdated, it’s more difficult to make alternate costumes with sprites, and if I’m being frank, HD-2D games just don’t look right.
I can see the worry. HD2D’s also one of the best things to come out of modern Square Enix, but I definitely get it. Octopath being quickly followed up with Triangle Strategy, Live Alive, then Octopath Traveler II’s and Dragon Quest III HD2D Remake’s announcements definitely made things feel a bit cramped.
I think it’s definitely good to let these games sit in the oven for a good long while before announcing them. My best guess is from here on it’ll just Octopath Traveler III, and a few remakes. I don’t see them making a new IP in HD2D for years and years, at least
That is an example of an opinion my friend. I on the other hand Love HD-2D games as well as normal 2D games and would sorely miss them if they vanished. I’m glad we both have games we like to play.
I like 2D games too, but they’re a pain to make alternate costumes, they’re an insult to people who want games with up-to-date graphics coughMega Man 9cough, and the more we move away from handheld only systems, they less necessary they become. why don’t we make a compromise and cell shaded games?
I just don’t see why we can’t have all the above (in fact we do). Artsyle is no longer dictated by necessity’s therefore game devs have the freedom to choose. I can’t speak for why some series haven’t gotten any 3D treatment, but every game can’t have a 3D game budget, not does it need to cuz every game doesn’t need to be 3D.
As far as being “insulted” goes, I can’t help but feel like there is some over fixation going on there. I feel confident that there are games you do like. Seems more gratifying to focus on the wealth of good 3D titles that there are rather than the deficit
“2D games are outdated” man I love blah, everything he says is like beyond wrong
Yes. I’ve been “wrong” SO many times. Like how I was “wrong” that Tatoba was going to get an upgrade, I was “wrong” that Mega Man was joining Smash, I was “wrong” that Digimon Adventure was coming back, I was “wrong” that Beast Boy and Starfire were going to kiss, and I was “wrong” that Trump was going to win 2024.
Translation: Tentri is a shizo, and he or she should not be trusted.
What the fuck is a Tatoba
Look at you, still turning up with wrong opinions. At least you’re reliable.
Okay zoomer
I was born in the 1980s, so you clearly made a mistake.
Someone being born in the 80s and saying games with sprites are outdated is even more grim than a zoomer saying it.
Shinygold2… as a zoom zoom… I kneel…
I I accidentally replied to the wrong person somehow… sorry guys
Nintendo needs to jump in and redo the Mother trilogy as HD-2D.
I can’t believe I’m saying this… but some Gen 1 and 2 of Pokemon in HD-2D would be pretty nice too. I’ve seen some mockups on youtube.
This is the dumbest worry possible lol, but then again it’s to be expected by the company that thought they weren’t gonna have a problem with making console exclusive deals on major projects only to have it bite them in ass horrendously.
I don’t think the HD-2D style is overdone, but the artstyle they keep using for it is. Dragon Quest doesn’t have the same artstyle as Octopath Traveler, so they still look unique from one another despite both having HD-2D sprites. Triangle Strategy looking exactly like Octopath Traveler was enough for me to be bored by it visually, and I’ll admit that was in part why I never bought it.
clears throat
MORE!!!!!
He has point, I think they should remake the other games using different art styles.
I wouldn’t mind at least remaking FFT and DQ5. I personally liked all the HD-2D games they released so far.
