Moon Studios CEO believes a new Banjo-Kazooie game could rival 3D Mario sales

Banjo Kazooie

Moon Studios is the talented team behind the charming 2D platformer Ori and the Blind Forest and its sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps, both of which are available on the Nintendo Switch. Pure Xbox managed to chat with the company’s CEO, Thomas Mahler, to ask a range of questions and of course talk turned to Banjo-Kazooie. When asked, Mahler expressed his disappointment at Microsoft sitting on the prestigious IP and he believes that if it was done right the game could even “rival 3D Mario and probably sell similar numbers.”

“They have been sitting on Banjo Kazooie with nothing happening there even though a really talented developer could probably make a Banjo game that could rival 3D Mario and probably sell similar numbers.”

    1. That’s a good joke. Maybe if they sold the IP to Nintendo, then it could match Mario sales. Even then, Mario will come out on top.

They underestimate the prevalence of Mario. Everyone and their mother buys the latest Mario game.

  1. Not optimistic but totally unrealistic rather…

Nuts and Bolt was a critical success but a commercial failure… yet released on the best console (so far) in terms of Microsoft’s sales

Unless they release a new banjo on Nintendo console, I absolutely don’t see them “competing” with a Mario in terms of sales on Series X/S or even PS5 or PC.

    1. According to MS it’s not worth anything. They killed an amazing team of devs by forcing them on to shit products and out the door. Rare is dead.

    2. Considering Xbox went 3rd party in 2017, it would be highly likely that if a new Banjo game were made it would release on Nintendo, and PlayStation too. Even then though I doubt it would compete in numbers but it absolutely would compete for attention because that’s what people wanted from N&B. A true return to form would be fantastic.

  2. Just a reminder that the same guy was at the center of the studio’s harassment scandal a few years ago, so maybe his perceptions shouldn’t be getting a lot of weight.

    1. Heard that was just slander. So unless you have proof, it’s quite irresponsible of you to spread this around. And he actually seems pretty based.

      1. A quick internet search shows multiple accusations and you can see Glassdoor reviews that confirm those. If you don’t accept that as proof that a problem exists, you’re just on copium at this point.

        1. That’s been tried already, and it’s how we ended up with Nuts & Bolts. Just be greatful that we got him in Smash.

        2. Unless you have a court ruling, what you are doing is called defamation and slander, and it is a crime. Accusations without proof are nothing more than noise, and if none of these accusations are backed by an official complaint, they are worthless.

  3. BanjoThreooie 🤔 I just hope it doesn’t turn into a Nuts and Bolts 2 instead of Platformer midway through the production.

  4. These guys say these things publicly only so that Microsoft dumps a ton of money on them to develop the game. Look at the state of Moon Studios today, not so successful, they’re fishing.

  5. Banjo Kazooie is my favorite game on the N64 and I really wanted a new game… but no matter how perfect they make it, it will never sell like a Mario game.

  6. No hate towards Banjo and Kazooie, but they aren’t ever rivaling Mario sales. That’s like saying Sonic games will rival them. I love Sonic games, but they can’t ever top Mario games. People will hate to hear this, but it’s just the truth.

  7. As a long-time fan of platformers, I’m excited about the possibility of a new Banjo-Kazooie game! Given the nostalgia and affection for the original, it could certainly attract a massive following. It might be interesting to see how they incorporate modern mechanics, like those in games such as Pokerogue and Pokerogue Dex, which have successfully blended classic elements with fresh gameplay. This could be a game changer in the genre!

  9. “A new Banjo-Kazooie game with the right care and creativity could definitely compete with 3D Mario! 🐻🐦 The original games had such charm and personality—it’s no wonder fans are still hoping for a comeback. Speaking of creativity, I’ve been channeling my love for classic characters by designing my own on OC-Maker.com. It’s a perfect way to imagine what Banjo-Kazooie could look like in a modern style. Let’s hope this dream becomes a reality!” 🎮✨
