Nintendo says its continuing to develop new mobile game apps

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that it is still in the process of developing mobile video game apps for Android and iOS devices. Furukawa says that it’s important to have a role beyond developing games for the Nintendo Switch 2 to increase consumer awareness of its various video game franchises. He then pointed towards the fact that downloads of Nintendo apps have exceeded 900 million worldwide.

Shuntaro Furukawa: “Although we cannot provide details on future application releases, we are continuing to develop new game applications… Going forward, even as we transition to Nintendo Switch 2, it remains important to increase touchpoints beyond video games. We believe that smart devices will take on a very important role in this endeavor, and we will continue to conduct research and implement initiatives. “

“Nintendo has released mobile apps in many parts of the world, including countries and regions we have not reached with our dedicated video game platform business. As of the end of September 2024, cumulative downloads of Nintendo apps exceeded 900 million (Total number of unique users for apps released so far by Nintendo.). I believe this has increased the opportunities for more people to access Nintendo IP and characters.”

  1. Felt like his wording is specifically for video game adjacent services like the recent Nintendo Music app and not full blown games. Unlike the Wii U era Nintendo console business is literally at their strongest now so I don’t see they bother with serious mobile games development anymore. Maybe a complementary game like Pikmin Run? Then again that’s a Niantic developed game and not Nintendo.

    1. Normal, Nintendo doesn’t want to invest as much in a mobile game as in a console game by mobilizing resources… that’s why Niantic manages this part

On the other hand, we must not dream… Mobile games are under a “freemium” model so well…

    2. Nintendo strategy is to expand their business in other areas, like they are doing with movies, the theme park and mobile games. Kimishima and Furukawa said that many times in past shareholder meetings. They also do it to increase awareness for their IPs as they mention it in the article. With that in mind, it means they will keep doing this strategy.

  2. I’m cool with this. Mobile games get a bad rep. Sure you get stuff at random and they don’t last forever, but at least they have both quality and quantity with their updates unlike ultimate, which only has 12 DLC fighters, half of which are complete garbage (I am of course, talking about Print Plant, Joker, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry, Min Min, and Steve).
