Borderlands 4 could potentially cost $80

Nintendo fans were fairly pleased to hear that Borderlands 4 will be making its way to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 platform. However, one thing that wasn’t mentioned is pricing. Fast forward to today and Borderlands fans are now legitimately concerned about how much the game is set to retail for after outspoken Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford responded to a fan about potential pricing. Here’s the exchange:

“Randy, this game better not be 80 dollars. Don’t take that risk, a lot of gamers aren’t gonna pay 80 dollars and feed this notion of constant increase of the price tag. You are the CEO, you have some say with the price when it comes to your publisher.”

And here’s Randy Pitchford’s response:

“A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.”

  1. If it’s $80 then i’ll just wait until it’s on sale for a discounted price, problem solved. No one said that the fanbase had to purchase games day one release.

  2. I made $3.85 an hour and I still found a way to pay for my Neo Geo system, granted I didn’t have a car until after I graduated high school…

    1. Kind of a tone deaf response, but I will happily pay $80 if we get complete games on carts. I will not pay anything for game key cards.

  3. I can’t remember any outrage when Sony raised their prices for PS5 games. 🤔 Maybe there was, but surely not to that extent.

    1. Not at all. The narrative was that (and this includes MS as well) that development cost was getting higher, and that there hadn’t been an increase in year, so it was a given AND expected for a price increase. Also, they brought up the whole argument that back in the day, sole consoles cost $1000, and some games were actually priced at $80-$100.

The same grace isn’t given to Nintendo, for whatever reason. 🤷

It is funny seeing the show on the other foot. Back in the early 2010’s and late 2000’s, Nintendo could no do wrong, and Sony got shitted on left and right. Now it’s Sony who gets all the pardon and Nintendo is getting the brunt of it lol

    2. “BUT PEOPLE WEREN’T COMPLAINING WHEN SONY DID IT” Yes they did. And even if they didn’t it’s not an excuse. Stop excusing this behavior for the love of god

      1. In a way lighter way they’re doing now because, in the end, people just hate and want to bash Nintendo for everything wrong in gaming.

I don’t see anyone complaining that GTAVI might cost 100$. Only that “it’s worth it in GTA case”. Don’t pretend there isn’t a double standard in the industry because there IS. Everything that’s happening now had precedent.

        1. “I don’t see anyone complaining about gta 6 costing 100 dollars” WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT LITERALLY EVERYONE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT GTA 6 COSTING 100 DOLLARS. I think YOU GUYS are putting a blind eye on Nintendo, Everyone was complaining about the last of us collection being 110 dollars, everyone complained about Xbox raising their price. And everyone complained about Nintendo raising their prices for their games. Greed is literally everywhere and people are realizing they are getting their wallets drained for no reason.

        2. you dont see people complaining about GTA’s price because they have not announced GTA’s price. please use critical thinking

  4. What an uppity response LMAO, seems like a bit of a tool. Won’t be buying unless it drops down on sale a reasonable price lol

  5. I HATE the baby boomers “back in my day” bullshit. The rise of the cost of living has completely eclipsed the rise of people’s take home pay. It’s very easy for the CEO of a company to spout this type of nonsense instead of just saying “yes the game will be expensive but we’ll make every dollar count.”

  6. The reality is that if it doesn’t sell at 80, they’ll quickly discount it within a month.
He didn’t word his response well, but in the end… yeah, if someone really wants the game, they’ll find a way to afford it. Pretty basic logic. We still have yet to see how well standard priced $80 games will perform.

Either my comment got nuked or it didn’t go through, either way I want to make a few clarifications. First, in not defending Randy, in fact I don’t even like him. Second, to me it sounds like that is directed at those that don’t have disposable income and may or may not come out the way it was intended, again I’m not defending him as I could be completely wrong. Third, he is right about games in the past being $80 or more but if you account for inflation it’s a lot more Donna technically he’s not wrong (still not defending him). That being said, if you think $80 is a lot then vote with your wallets not just for this game but also games like CoD and GTA IV, otherwise you will be enabling these companies to price them at $80 or even $150.
