Sonic Team boss realised that they actually needed to save the Sonic brand

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has had plenty of low points over the years with Sonic Team and SEGA releasing some unfortunate games in the past like Sonic 2006, Sonic Boom, and numerous others. The fact is that Sonic Team failed to bring Sonic successfully into the 3D platforming space, while Nintendo’s Mario soared in his own 3D adventures. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka, says that ten years ago he ultimately came to the realisation that the Sonic brand simply needed saving. Since then we’ve had a successful live-action Sonic movies, the excellent Sonic Mania and the promising but flawed, Sonic Frontiers.

“Ten years ago, I moved from Tokyo to Burbank. At that time, the Sonic brand was not in a very positive space. A lot of people were bashing on the brand. They really weren’t happy with the things coming out,” Iizuka recalls.

“When I moved over from Tokyo to Los Angeles, it was like an ‘oh my god’ moment,” Iizuka admits. “Like, we need to save the brand, or this brand isn’t going to be around for much longer.”

  1. And then they made Lost World, and Forces, and Colors Ultimate, and Not so superstars, and Microtransaction filled Origins

  2. They always talk about trying to save Sonic but it genuinely feels like they don’t really have core mechanical changes they add to really freshen things up like Nintendo does with Mario. Feels like the same old tune.

    1. Like Nintendo does with Mario? Don’t make me laugh Mario has been regurgitated so many times now it’s the same song and dance Mario Kart World is LITERALLY just Mario Kart but now in an open world and with transforming vehicles which All Stars Transformed did first btw so ironically Nintendo is taking a page from Sonic’s book , Sega has been so much more creative with Sonic it’s just those games fall flat and the Internet refuses to give the Blue Blur a fucking break! If a Mario game is mediocre it’s fucking gospel (same with Zelda) , but if a Sonic game is just a tiiiiiny bit glitchy or the gameplay isn’t life changing it’s a bad game automatically… Puh-leese

      1. sonic isnt creative bro LOL he’s a goddamn trend rider and crossover h03 cause sega is desperate for money.
frontiers has no business being open world either but they wanted some breath of the wild money.

      1. Sonic’s not trash and he wasn’t triggered because all of Nintendo franchises are same old, same old. There’s more people out there who think the same thing.

        1. Sonic is Garbage lmaooo

The only people who think the same as you are other Sonic man-babys, not normal functional human beings 😂
And Sonic hasn’t innovated anything in decades, it’s the same low effort slop shat out every time because SEGA knows their loyal dogs will eat up whatever garbage they serve you with a smile.

Sonic is objectively garbage, keep coping man-baby 🤣

            1. Sonic is dead bro lmaoo

Bro’s unable to cope with people pointing out that their favourite game series is objectively trash 😭😭
Please go touch some grass fam

              1. aren’t you the one commenting with multiple alts just trying to get a rise out of people with your low tier insults cause they like something you don’t? came back just to confirm if you were still being a loser, turns out i was right. sybau homie 🥀🥀

        2. Sometimes, “same old, same old” can be a good thing. There is something to be said for a strong artistic direction. Otherwise, you get something like what Sonic suffers through at times, with deeply divided fiefdoms of creatives who have their own, different, sometimes conflicting take on the character.

  3. Took them long enough. I’m convinced Classic Sonic dressed as Shadow is the closest we’re going to get to a fusion between Sonic & Shadow for now. How about a playable Sally Acorn, super modes for all of Sonics friends, or-I don’t know-a mainline title where Sonics friends are playable?

  4. Sonic got a lot of catching up to do. The franchise is almost falling behind for improving the Sonic brand as a whole. Lost World and Forces was one of the worse games in the series as a compete fail experiment.

  5. Bring Shiro Maekawa back. Bring back thr 4Kids voice cast and fire Ian Flynn and Aarom Webber. Bring Sonic Riders back too

    1. I agree near fully. Ian can’t write for crap & killed the already awful story potential. He is arguably worse than Pontac & Graff

  6. This comment section really does feel like the store-brand version of Nintendo Life’s. More toxic, less reasonability. Where the hell are the moderators?

    1. Nooo I can’t cope with people calling out Sonic for being a garbage franchise, help me moderators!!! 😭😭

  7. Are we just gonna ignore the fact that shadow gens was the best sonic game in I don’t know how long and already greatly improved upon frontiers mechanics. Like yea they’ve been saying the same shit for over a decade now but this time looks like they’re actually trying.

    1. Johnny HackleSteveonsenny

Jumping on buildings in the original Crackdown from 2007 is more engaging than any level in that game

  8. They should reboot Sonic Adventure 3! They should have never scrapped it in the first place! Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is currently the greatest 3D platform based Sonic game to ever be released! They should reboot Sonic Adventure 3 in Unreal Engine 5!

  9. The 1990s to early 2000s was peak Sonic the Hedgehog and SEGA in general. Sonic has been dead to me since the end of the Dreamcast. And that era of gaming is my favorite of all time. Sonic Rush was the last Sonic game that I actually enjoyed. The final game with the original creator and team. And I don’t think that’s a coincidence. The classics and the memories of that time still hold up to this day. In that sense Sonic the Hedgehog is still alive in my heart

  10. This is a really weirdly inflammatory article. Sure, critiquing a series isn’t inherently wrong, but it’s filled with typos and is borderline clickbait based on the fact that Iizuka said that happened ten years ago.

Disappointed this was allowed to go up, I generally really like this site.

  11. Let me get this straight, this post was actually talking past tense, and they think Sonics current state is somehow good? Laughs while pointing at the clown known as Sega
