Nintendo consulted with publishers on Switch 2 Game-Key Cards

A recent translation of Nintendo’s annual shareholders meeting last month reveals that Nintendo talked with third party publishers about the controversial Game Key-Cards before the system launched to work out a solution to deliver a cost effective way of delivering software. Mr. Furukawa noted the increased onboard storage available on the Nintendo Switch 2 compared to its predecessor. He said that Game-Key Cards were conceived as “an option” for third party publishers to bring their games to retail and that they had discussed that Game Key-Cards could inevitably see physical game ownership on the platform reduced compared to its predecessor. He concluded by saying that that Nintendo will work hard to help third parties sell their games at retail to consumers.

    1. Just like the console, you never own the games you buy, even the physical ones. You pay for a license that gives you the right to use it, that’s all. It’s time to understand that.

      1. Such a narrow-minded uninformed view. I do not own the brand nor the software on my phone, but if someone steals my phone it is theft. Same as if someone takes my physical game without my permission they have committed theft.

      2. That’s not what they are referring to. Obviously you’re not purchasing the IP when you buy a physical game. However, you DO own that instance of the game.

      3. Everyone understands it and it’s not the way we want. Every other products and services is clearly stated how long it will be available for its buyers, why games have to be different?

  1. I dont plan buy whatever on game keycard 😌 i better wait year or two for limited run physical. I dont buy mario galaxy 3 or odyssey 2 if release on keycard 🥰👍
If nintendo stop releasing physical games i end with nintendo after 40 years of buying nintendo products 😔

    1. Nintendo First Party Switch 2 games are fully on the cartridge, it’s only third party using Game Key Cards

      1. They failed to mention that they also only offered a 64gb cards which are expensive and way too much for say a 10gb game. Of course third parties would use game key cards. So essentially nintendo found a way to make the customer pay for the storage instead of them or the publisher. Rest assure the extra storage in the switch 2 did not come free and you payed for it when buying it. So now we are going to pay for more storage (and express sd cards are hella expensive) because nintendo gave the third parties practically no choice but go for a game key card instead of an expensive 64gb cards. Whats more, you might expext game key cards games to sell cheaper right? Well no, so its a win win for nintendo and the publishers. Either nintendo wins by selling the expensive 64gb cards to publishers, and if not, the publisher just saved a lot of money on storage by forcing us to buy it separately. The gamer pays the price (and lets not start talking about ownership implications)

Why should they consult with customers? Are u the one releasing the games? Its to reduce cost to third parties so if it benefits them, then its ok

      1. Publisher produce game. Annoy consumer with keycard. Consumer doesn’t purchase. Publisher cry and blame consumer. Publisher goes away. Consumer returns with no game to play because it doesn’t feel the touch. Bye bye game industry to mobile.

    1. Bitching about bitching is something else lol.
You really think we must accept a condition in which we understand we are being screwed? Stay silent and endure? You are free to do whatever you want, and so do we
