Nintendo has clarified the information that was temporarily uploaded on its website that the Nintendo Switch 2 has shifted over five million units worldwide since it launched last month is “not accurate.” It is not clear what the actual sales figure is as the Kyoto-based company wouldn’t disclose that. The information comes from analyst David Gibson who contacted Nintendo for comment on the figure and was told it was for testing purposes only and is not accurate.

Could be just a rough estimate. Or an automated total when they haven’t finished accounting for everything and making sure there are no mistakes.
A good company tracks their sales figures, so in short, yes. Obviously they’re still tracking and updating this data as it’s only been less than a full month since release, but there’s enough data at this point to guesstimate the sales. We’ll have a more accurate number later.

In my opinion as long as we don’t know the methodology of the count of the sales (for example: shipped or sold copies), that number is only a marketing.
Interesting that Nintendo had to clarify the sales figures. With so many rumors and speculations, it’s hard to separate fact from hype. Probably not that many because gamers know they’re not to break the ToU, as with any console. You play by the rules EVERY console manufacturer and developer has in place (it’s not just Nintendo nor is it new) and you won’t have a problem. The entitled casuals think they can do whatever they want though.
