NetherRealm Studios has announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has shifted over 6.2 million copies making it arguably the best-selling fighting game of the generation. Other competitors such as Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 and Bandai Namco’s Tekken 8 have sold five million and three million respectively. NeatherRealm Studios previously said that there will no longer be any new content coming to Mortal Kombat 1, which went down rather badly with fans of the franchise and owners of the game. However, Ed Boon has said on X that the team will continue to release balance patches in the form of software updates.

Because discounts and how many years since its been released? Really bad looking at this. Fighting games are not doing well but companies refuse to change.
That’s probably because, like sports games and anti-consumer GAAS online PVP shooters, there’s not much they can change. It’s a fighting game, no matter what content you attempt to put in there it’s always going to end up in a 1v1 match. Giving it a good story would help only so much, and these types of games aren’t made for gamers but casual hobbyists and twitch streamers/influencers who think eSports is a skilled trade. As someone who has always enjoyed MK, they’re best purchased at $20 or less. Once you’ve beaten the main story with a few characters there’s just no replayability left, and no, going online to fight people who all use the same combos for their specific characters as everyone else who picks Scorpion isn’t replayability; that’s an exercise in chaos. An NPC will always be a better opponent than a human, humans are far too predictable, but even that gets old when it’s the same map for the 1000x.
Give me a game, not a brief time waster between meals.
Fighting games are doing fine.
MK just sucks absolute donkey dick but it has gore so edge lords think it’s “the best FG” thus buy it to fight for their buddies once or twice never to be touched again.
Great game. The story was pretty “meh”, at least in Act 3 tho.
The entire game is bad. Ed Boon just trying to save himself and studios as well as the brand so he’s bragging about this number years after release. The numbers sold and active player base are not close same with amount who bought at discount and who avoided DLC. Ed Boon needs to be fired and honestly NRS should be shut down WB needs to just license out.
It sold 6.2 million units, so why do people still call it a failure?
It currently sold that before it sold way less and underperformed the game is now sold at discount. Adding all the licensed guest characters and actor likeness they have to pay for and celebrity voices it raises the costs and they failed to make that back. Just because a game sells well lifetime wise doesn’t mean it was a major success if the money isn’t matching up. Street Fighter 6 is the same and Tekken 8 is getting there.
It sold less than half of its predecessor Mortal Kombat 11, for one. (Admittedly, this was a tough act to follow, as MKX(L) and MK11 were the best-selling games in the series.) For another, critical and commercial reception for Khaos Reigns, the post-launch story and character expansion, was low enough that Warner Bros. decided to pull the plug on any future seasons of content.
Though, really, failure is too strong a word. It just wasn’t enough of a success to stanch the sucking gut wound in WB’s wallet from the real failures like Suicide Squad and Multiversus.
That game was garbage.

Bring back the skimpy outfits.
They somewhat did but they keep the ugly faces. NRS has been exposed they purposely make the female designs look ugly. Studio needs to close down. Don’t forget man face Wonder Woman in Injustice 2 or the weird designs in MK11. Then add on this is the first MK main game without Hanzo as a playable character the most popular character is not in this game playable the Real Scorpion! Who they spat on because Ed Boon hates Scorpion.
Honestly, i prefer Soul Calibur.
Where is Injustice 3?
It should have been this year but Ed Boon lies again. He said they’d return to a new game after 2 years but that didn’t happen Injustice 3. He’s a liar and they refuse to fire him. Injustice 3 needs to win people over and wow everyone and it won’t given NRS just does the same thing over again. They need to license out games especially DC the WB studios are trash.
