Epic Games CEO tries to explain why Nintendo Switch 2 ports experience performance issues

There’s been a worrying trend of Unreal Engine 5 ports on the Nintendo Switch 2 having performance issues on Nintendo’s latest platform. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, claims that the problem lies with the developers and optimisation, rather than the company’s Unreal Engine 5. Of course, Sweeney didn’t want to blame certain developers, but he did say it was more a matter of them properly optimising their games in the early stages of development. He pointed out that Fortnite runs really well on Nintendo Switch 2, though obviously that is developed by Epic Games on their own engine.

“The primary reason is the development process. Many developers begin by developing games for high-end hardware, then optimize and test on lower-spec devices in the final stages. Ideally, optimization should be implemented early.”

“Of course, optimization is by no means an easy task. It’s a very difficult one. Ideally, optimization should be implemented early in development, before full-scale content building begins. To address this issue, we are preparing two main approaches.” Sweeney added that Epic Games plans to add automated optimization in future UE5 updates to help with manual labor. He also added that they will be offering developer training courses.

  1. Well, on hand UE5 has been a topic for a lot of youtubers saying that is not as good as Epic promises. On the other hand, is true, Fortnite runs pretty good. It seems that to make unreal engine to run well you actually have to care. And caring is what executives and some developers are lacking right now.

    1. I played Fortnite on my Switch 2 and it’s really running pretty smoothly on the platform with smooth frame rates and animation. Plus the environments In the game didn’t lagged when I land on a certain location. I believe Epic Games just wanted to try Fortnite first for unreal engine 5.

    2. It’s no wonder thag Fortnite runs better than for example Split Fiction, because it has a lot simpler graphics (a bit cartoony), less details and no split screen multiplayer. If you all remember difficulties to incorporate split screen multiplayer on Xbox series S was the main reason why Baldur’s Gate 3 delayed so long on Xbox altogether. Saying that Fortnite is better optimized without saying that it’s also graphically less demanding is not whole truth.

I think Sweeny said they are making updates to UE5 and beyond to do a lot of the cookie cutter optimization for developers throughout entirety of the development along with tools to weigh in. But that could only go so far. Developers need to know the hardware they are developing for before developing. If u remember multiplat games for PS3 always suffered because hardware was a nightmare for them in comparison to other hardware.

  2. Tencent needs to fully acquire Epic Games buyout Sweeney and the other minority shareholders save Unreal Engine and Fortnite it’s been awful. While they’re at it go on a buy spree and buy Kadokawa next get Sony out the picture.

    1. I’d rather not have a CCP company acquiring more good companies and ruining them as they currently have been. The less communism in the world the better. What an idiotic statement you made.

      1. made obsolete, yet could emulate the switch better than the switch itself. to the point nintendo copyright striker switch emulation on steam deck videos.

    1. Yeah, that’s not the problem game developers don’t know how to optimize. There’s emulators back in the late 90s early 2000s that we’re running at higher resolution and framerate, better than Playstation & Nintendo could. because of optimization

  3. Tired of the finger pointing from both parties. It’s both of their fault. That’s why I got a gaming handheld pc along with switch 2. I’m not waiting 10 years to play a inferior port of expedition 33 and metal gear solid delta for $70 bucks lol.

  4. “There’s been a worrying trend of Unreal Engine 5 ports on the Nintendo Switch 2 having performance issues on Nintendo’s latest platform.”

It’s not only on Switch 2. MGS Delta and Oblivion Remaster have serious optimization issues and none is on the Switch 2. It’s an engine problem.

    1. Except as proven time and time again, S2 hardware isn’t the problem. As for graphics, no real gamer cares about them one bit, and the S2 has been proven to be more powerful than the XSS. You’re entire approach to gaming shows you’re a casual hobbyist instead of a real gamer.

      1. ‘No real gamers care about graphics’ must have been what the Switch 2 sales guy told you. Graphics are almost entirely what a large swath of gamers care about. Look at GPU sales or almost the entire PC segment. Hell benchmarks specifically show the FPS difference between high and low settings and almost any game that requires low graphics for playable frames gets review bombed.
