Hollow Knight Silksong price point is causing developers to rethink pricing

artwork for Hollow Knight: Silksong

The excellent Hollow Knight: Silksong launched yesterday for the grand price of $20 / £16.75 but some developers who’ve spoken to Eurogamer believe that price point is too low and could reflect badly on their games which are set to be slightly more. It should be noted that Team Cherry has four core team members, and it uses some contracted help, whereas AAA games can have over a thousand working on a project. It will be interesting to see if Silksong’s price point could affect video game pricing going forward.

I said to a mate a mine the price of this puts other indie developers to shame. The amount of sheer slop out there for £15-£20 is unreal. Mainstream developers are something different unfortunately with the sheer amount of employees that they have

  2. Yep, triple A game developers with thousands of people and millions of pounds, movie stars and big time composers and they still mess it up a lot sometimes and then you have the likes of team Cherry and Eric Barone. Crazy stuff!

    1. Yeah and all that stuff is irrelevant to most people, so they should stop wasting money on it. It’s just vanity and ego from the developers. It means absolutely nothing to me seeing Keanu Reeves likeness in Cyberpunk

      1. I thought this would have been something positive but instead its other game companies being jealous, toxic, and hateful over Silksong’s success and trying to being the team behind it for it and to convince them to charge the horrible prices that now souless AAA studios use.

    1. The price of a game these days is like a movie: a whole bunch of actors (no pun intended) come into play and it inflates the price unnecessarily or not, it’s hard to say, but Nintendo proves that it’s not always necessary to spend hundreds of millions to release excellent games that sell by the millions.I also find it interesting that independents do it the same way; some games are visually ‘simple’ yet still captivating, Silksong is an example.

  3. Video games have been outrageously overpriced for decades. To compare, movies can be absurdly expensive to make, costing upwards $100-$200 million (or $300 million in certain cases). But they only go to consumers for $20-$30. Knowing this, I can scarely excuse the gaming industry for charging so much for their products. They can be cheaper if they wanted them to be. And Silksong proves it.

    1. Yes, but consider the amount of time a movie lasts compared to a game and it is very justifiable. People cry about the price of Mario Kart World, but the replay value is insane.

      1. I disagree that game length should dictate a higher price tag. There are many mobile games out there that have hundreds of hours of content, but are still free-to-play.

  4. If it’s my game I will set the price where I want, it’s not their fault if it reflects badly on everyone else. What is considered too low for a game price? Isn’t the price based on what the devs want to sell it for?

  5. Where did anyone “rethink pricing”? Didn’t get this at all from the linked article. Also the game was first announced over 6 years ago and I read multiple times, that it is basically the same as the first one (can’t say if thisbis true). So I’m not sure if it’s to “cheap”.🤷‍♂️

  6. This is great news to hear, however we should remember that the indie devs are the last ones we should point the finger at when it comes to pricing, it’s the large companies like Nintendo that should be punished for their greed

  7. It makes you wonder if they had this discussion within the company to sell at $30 or 40 vs 20 realizing just the sheer number of units a $20 pricepoint would move in comparison to the others which they probably could have justified. They also won’t have to try and drop the price eventually (seeing as the quality is so good) and then it will be at this price for a long while.

  8. Oh god not this argument again… It’s so braindead. I remember when a journalist tried to shame ConcernedApe for saying all DLC for Stardew Valley would always be free. God forbid any developer or publisher do something that’s good for the consumer.

  9. The price is so consumer friendly that I want to buy it just to support the company despite not ever having played Hollow Knight!

  10. Good, games shouldnt cost an arm and a leg if team cherry can make a masterpiece and charge 15 to 20 why dobt other devs get the point ill tell you why Greed!
