A spiritual successor to SSX that was to be published by 2K was canned

Update: Turns out this article which popped up in my feeds is now a year old.

A recent report on the huge number of layoffs recently in the video game industry has revealed that a spiritual successor to the much-loved SSX franchise was in the works but has since been canned. The spiritual successor was in development by Steve Rechtschaffner and Larry LaPierre, best-known as the creators of the SSX series, at their new studio SuperNatural, and was set to be published by 2K Games. The team was looking to make the game an “arcadey, amazing-feeling, very accessible, competitive and fun game.” It was codenamed Project Gravity by the team and was planned to be a live-service, free-to-play title. Sadly, the SSX successor will now never see the light of day.

  1. Was just thinking how few snowboarding games there are now compared to the past, so disappointing to see. I remember there being one from Ubisoft announced for Switch around launch but that just disappeared. I hope Nintendo revives 1080 as I love both those games but probably the best we’ll get is 1080 Avalanche on GameCube Switch Online, which I’d still love tbh. My one worry with that is the licenced music it had though

    1. Ahh Steep, that was a great game. It sucks that it didn’t make the splash that I hope it did. You can actually find it for around $5 in a lot of sales. And I believe it’s been part of a few humble bundles. If you never got to play it I suggest picking it up, it’s great.

  2. OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :(

Bought SSX Tricky for the GameCube last month and I LOVED IT. So sad they haven’t gave the series another chance it’s really really fun.

  3. Hyperyuki Snowboarding. Honestly wanted TeamReptile to make a game like SSX meets Jet Set Radio with open world. Maybe Acclaim or Atari could pick this game up.

    1. Great games, but they got less fun as time went on. The last one was a reboot that didn’t do the series justice. Original creators wanted a more mature gritty game, but EA stopped it right away and forced to do a bland game with micro transactions.
