Update: Turns out Kyodo News took a quote and shrunk it down from an older interview and ran with that line in the article as if it is what Mr. Miyamoto said to the publication. I’ve now updated the headline.
Legendary video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken briefly in an interview with Kyodo News about why Nintendo has ventured into the film making business. Miyamoto simply told them that “Games eventually stop running when newer versions come out, but films remain forever.” Nintendo has a number of movie projects in the works including Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda movie.

GOD what a stupid take, why even say this, there is such a huge love and craft for older games that make them timeless, gen alpha are still playing Mario 64 like what are we talking about here, and if this is about hardware wise, EMULATION, official or not official I don’t care, great older games will be great no matter how much time passes
(suggestion: this Biblical verse: “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” – Ephesians 4:29, New Living Translation version)
Your stupid.
And i mean that you have a stupid.
Its a mistranslation, he never say that
What a load of faff, from one of the wisest game developers out there.
I’ve watched the Mario movie once and probably played super Mario bros over a 100 times
Bad take, Shiggy! I still play your early titles and I only cared to watch the SMB movie once. Now, the old one… That dumpster fire is so fun to revisit!
It was a load of faff… because it was a shrunken down quote taken WAYYYY out of context.
You were duped, and rather embarrassingly so.
It’s true, there are no servers to shut down for movies 😭
Yeah, I think he should change his comment to games that are made this generation will eventually stop running, and those game key cards are just going to be plastic pollution
Mfw I can’t play super Mario sunshine on my GameCube anymore cause the Delphino plaza server shut down 😣😣😣😣😣
“Mfw I can’t play super Mario sunshine on my GameCube anymore cause the Delphino plaza server shut down”
^(question: meaning of “Mfw” part of this message)
How sad. Don’t you have 3D all stars?
It’s called Netflix Original Movies :-P
Movies do not last forever 😂 some movies are nearly impossible to watch, and some have even been lost over the course of time.
There is no such thing as forever for anything.
Things only last if they are kept well, and maintained though history. But if not they are doomed to become obsolete.
If it wasn’t for some companies especially Disney that keep everything in a vault, most Disney films would either not exist, or be very difficult to find.
It’s the same for Nintendo, they re=release there older titles over and over just to maintain their presence through history, but sadly eliminate their presence as soon as the servers are closed down.
In the end the only way anything classical, vintage or historic is preserved is either in museums, personal or private collections, or in vaults of established companies.
In the end it’s up to people who care about preservation, and seeing that things are kept and cared for. Nintendo no longer cares, nor do the Pokemon Company as they are all about numbers and money now.
Everything of value in the hearts and minds of people will have to be preserved by the people, and whether we agree or disagree with Nintendo’s pricing, and the Pokemon company bullying of fans and competitors alike, plus very poor looking games of late, then it’s also up to the people to decide whether to continue supporting these toxic business practices or not.
And if Nintendo and Pokemon one day disappears, what will become of any of their legacy, unless preserved maintained and kept well by the people.
Another thing that will eventually stop running. GAME KEY CARDS
Cartridges and Disks wear out too.
Nintendo sold out. Been seen this when they brought someone from Universal one the board. Only hope is Saudi Arabia buying them out in maybe 5-10 years. So far Nintendo is doing really well so that possibility very far away. Who knows other option is Japanese government getting stricter with them and other Japanese companies to be more Japanese not western.
If that’s true why sell Mario Galaxy for the third time? Many people, myself included, enjoy playing older games too from time to time.
Not just movies last forever but animations too. Cartridges and Disk can wear out anytime down the line.
The heart and soul of this company died with Iwata.
Hi Commander.
I don’t even understand what he’s trying to say.
IDK people, i check the source, and the source doesnt have proof of anything says, so i call BS
This is from a much larger interview from over a year ago. In context it’s not as bad as it sounds. Here’s the original (feel free to translate it for yourself with google/chatgpt/etc. – it’s the section labeled “Creating reasons for people to choose Nintendo”):
https://www.ndw.jp/nintendomuseum-interview-240925/
TLDR: The broad scope of the interview about the museum. Miyamoto brings up that he’s very sad that old games become unplayable, and that he’s making videos because he’s sad that the only way to experience some Nintendo products is through the virtual console.
@sickr please post an update about this
If he cared he’d have updated the article.
Thanks, I updated it earlier. I was asleep when your comment was posted as it was 4.44am my time.
Hey sickr, that guy who hacked into my account and post a comment about calling a user stupid, that’s not me. It was the hacker who hacked into my account. I already change my password so many times because of him.
You really guys are very stupid to not understand what Mr. Miyamoto said.
Videogames and movies are separate entities, retro or modern, with different approaches and different public. Not every fan of Super Mario Bros is a gamer, especially young ones. Movies are going to expand the Super Mario Bros universe for broader audience, and thats something videogames cant do even with dozens of SMB titles. I’m a retro gamer, I played every goddamn Mario game and I can see the vision very clearly Miyamoto is expressing… what a bunch of idiots you are to not get his interpretation.
Bruh, this guy has officially reached senile levels. He’ll eventually start yelling at clouds.

Miyamoto makes a great point: games evolve and fade, but films endure. It’s a reminder of how different media leave their mark in unique ways.
