Nintendo says going forward it will shift primary development focus to Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has confirmed what was bound to happen at some point and has stated that going forward the company will shift its primary development focus to the Nintendo Switch 2. That means games from now on will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 once the last first party Nintendo Switch games have launched. The Kyoto-based company says it will expand its business around the new platform.

Going forward, we will shift our primary development focus to Nintendo Switch 2 and expand our business around this new platform.

  1. This should hopefully mean a more robust lineup that takes full advantage of the new hardware. The overwhelming success of the Switch has almost certainly held back this launch window for Switch 2.

    1. Oh relax.

I’m sure their biggest in-house teams have BEEN developing exclusive games for Switch 2 since 2022 or so, and those games have yet to be announced. However, during that same time period, they were still developing games that were still compatible with Switch 1, like Tomadachi Life and Metroid Prime 4.

All this news story is suggesting is that at this point, going forward, 100% of their game development will be exclusive to Switch 2; no more of that “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” crap.

We’re still going to see some games that have yet to be released coming for Switch 1 (likely because they began development quite a while ago), but NOW going forward, everything will be exclusive to Switch 2.

  2. I would hope so. All of the Switch 2’s biggest hits so far have begun life as titles developed for the original Switch.
