Team Cherry says Hollow Knight Silksong pricing was simply “reasonable”

Team Cherry’s excellent Hollow Knight: Silksong was a steal at $20 with many assuming before its release that it would be priced at a much higher price point. Team Cherry’s co-lead, Ari Gibson, has said in ACMI’s paperback Hollow Knight: Silksong guide, said the team thought that the price point was “reasonable” for most people and that while the game turned out to be huge, they never planned for it to be priced higher.

“Because we try to price the games at a reasonable level for people – and we have quite a habit of expanding the content to be quite large – it felt inevitable that it would get to a point where the value of what we make would warrant being recognised as a single title.”

    1. This honestly sums up why so many people love Team Cherry. Even with Silksong turning into a massive, content-packed game, they still stuck with a price they felt was fair instead of chasing a higher tag just because they could. It’s rare to see a studio prioritize accessibility and value this much.

Given how big Silksong ended up being, $20 really was a steal — and this just makes the release feel even more respectful toward the community.

  1. It’s a perfect example that other developers are just greedy, hence why game key cards are being used when they COULD put certain games on a card like cyberpunk for example.
Money, money, money. Greed, greed, greed. It’ll never change!

  2. It is of course unreasonable to compare other indie games to Hollow Knight. Team Cherry knew they were going to sell millions and so were able to price accordingly. It’s great because it shows such a refreshing lack of capitalist greed in the modern era – they would 100% make more money if they price at $40 but they also would 100% make enough money at $20 so why price people out. However, other indie devs that don’t have the security of all that hype behind their game should be afforded more sympathy. AAA games on the other hand, they need to compete.

    1. Not only that, but the entirety of Team Cherry could fit in a small elevator 🤦‍♂️ it’s easy to say, hey, why aren’t they charging more for a game that had as much hype as Half Life 3, and a development team that you could count on one hand. Nintendo and UBI only have 1000s in their team, why can’t they sell their games for $20. It only took them 4-6 years to make that game. The overhead can’t be too crazy, right?
