Aonuma: Nintendo wanted to be first to release Zelda on Switch 2, Age of Imprisonment may influence next game

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has said in a new interview with 4Gamer that Nintendo wanted to be the first to release a brand new Zelda game on the Nintendo Switch 2, though obviously they were beaten to the punch by Koei Tecmo. Aonuma also hinted that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has influenced the next The Legend of Zelda mainline game in some way. He concluded by asking the fans to look forward to the next The Legend of Zelda adventure.

“The Legend of Zelda: Age of Imprisonment is the first Zelda title released for the Nintendo Switch 2. If I’m honest, we wanted to be the first to do so,” he said, laughing.

“The inspiration we received from our collaboration with Koei Tecmo may be reflected in the Zelda we create. Please imagine this while playing Age of Imprisonment, and look forward to our Zelda.”

      1. Tbh ..definitive edition was actually the better ones character and tone wise .. it’s a game of Zelda fanservicy . The other two games kinda were hurt being limited to t
One era and a few characters only things they did where fleshing out the main line stories and adding better personalities to the characters….who were just tropes… Looking at the sages and champions

    1. We literally know nothing about the next mainline game. He said the inspiration MAY be reflected. He didn’t specifically say it was anything about the battle system. You’re jumping the gun by like…a lot.

      1. We already know that because of how TotK divided the fanbase with how lazy and shallow it was, that they’re going back to a more traditional structure for the next mainline title, something all Zelda fans want.

      2. I am not jumping the gun at all. Don’t get how you people are misunderstanding me. I don’t even want any kind of influence from it or even a maybe it will be. I don’t care for it at all. It’s my opinion.

    2. Um, we already have confirmation that they’re going back to a more traditional design after TotK divided the fanbase. All he’s saying here is that something KT did might influence their design choices, which could literally be anything from how they program a menu to character design inspiration to narrative structuring, but it won’t be a Musou game because that’s obvious. The Warriors games aren’t Zelda games that Nintendo makes, they’re spin-offs. Nintendo makes actual Zelda games, so I’m not sure how you could even come to any sort of conclusions you did.

      1. It’s not even confirmed that they are 100% going back to traditional Zelda. Aonuma said it would be the next evolution of Zelda after totk and that all the ideas that had for botw style Zelda was done in totk which is why we got no dlc for totk. I think my comment was misunderstood a little from you guys here. I don’t like the idea even if it’s a maybe that the next Zelda will have anything from totk or any of the age of garbage games period but that’s my opinion. I know Nintendo doesn’t make those age of games but I don’t like aonuma saying these things even if it doesn’t come true like you are saying. Still worries me regardless. I don’t want to play botw 3 lol.

  1. At least Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom technically received full Switch 2 re-releases first. On launch day no less.

  2. I wonder if this confirms the next 3D Zelda will be in the same engine as BoTW and ToTK. If so, does that mean any sort of remaster or remake of OoT or Majora’s Mask will be held off yet again? I’m curious if we’ll even get them and if the 3DS versions will actually be the last ones.

  3. He’s just saying that to make people like me, who don’t care about Hyrule Warriors, consider buying it thinking it has anything to do with a mainline Zelda experience. NICE TRY DIDDY

    1. The Diddy comment, doesn’t make you look cool or funny. It was old 2 seconds after the first person did it and that was, in internet time, decades ago. Grow up. Secondly, that’s not at all what he’s saying so the fact you couldn’t easily see that and made a horribly immature comment shows your lack of maturity.

  4. This news is so bizarre. I mean, Zelda is a Nintendo franchise, how did Nintendo get “beaten” by Koei Tecmo?
I don’t know, I guess it means we might have a new Zelda on the way. I doubt it’s a brand-new entry, though — probably a remake. The series turns 40 next year, so why not Ocarina of Time?
TotK was “just” released, so it feels too soon for a new mainline Zelda.

    1. Absolutely not, we don’t need more bloat on a substandard mediocre game that’s been the only thing keeping shit tier devs Bugthesda alive for nearly two decades. It’s Skyrim, a boring open world that isn’t fun to play without mods, next.

  5. man whatever this means, just hope we not getting botw 3. im tired of this hyrule, this link, this ganon, EVERYTHING.
Let it die. make a twilight princess timeline game (after four swords adventure) or give toon link a new adventure. anything but botw or alttp era/world milking.

    1. They confirmed they were done with this era of Zelda around 3 months after TotK released because it divided the fanbase with how shallow and lazy it was. TotK is the WORST Zelda game in the franchise by a long shot, and they know it. To the deniers, BotW had hype from 2017 all the way to TotKs launch. TotK hype died in the first month and anyone who was paying attention noticed. They spent 6 years creating the empty Sky Islands and the bland, boring depths, giving us more boring shrines and the garbage Ultrahand gimmick to prevent them from having to create actual puzzles and dungeons that were worth a damn. For all the issues BotW had, it was a first and therefore got a pass; TotK needed to capitalize and it failed spectacularly.

      1. The Switch 1 is my favourite console

Wow, you’re really upset over TotK huh? Maybe you should chill out by playing something on your Nintendo Switch 1 gaming system :)

      2. eh, ill believe that when i see it.
im not convinced they’re willingly to let of this hyrule die or this shitty formula (korok poop, shrines, lack of story, and amnesia link who just woke up).

without the bs, they’ll have to actually put things in the world…or they could do the smart thing and shrink the size of the map.

also nah, ultra hand is cool. only good thing about totk.

  6. I really questioning the quality of Nintendo. The story in BotW and TotK was awful, then in Mario Odyseey was just straight dumb and now the new Donkey Kong game, that throws the whole storyline over board with young Paulina. This is beyond crap. But it gets better, because now Nintendo wants 80 BUCKS per game. No way in hell will I give money for this trash.
