Hideo Kojima says without Super Mario Bros he would “probably” never become developer

Famed video game developer Hideo Kojima has said in a new interview that Super Mario Bros. inspired him to become a video game developer. Speaking to Wired Japan, Kojima stated that when he was a college student he played Super Mario Bros. for about a year and it is the game which persuaded him to become a developer and without it he might have pursued a different path.

“[I] played it for a year. I was a college student. I skipped school to play at home. Without Super Mario, I probably wouldn’t have been in this industry. Yeah. I can’t really play it now, though. It’s a side-scrolling action game. Mario just goes left to right. Basically just jumping.”

“When I saw that, although it was pixel art with no story, I felt this medium would one day surpass movies. That conviction brought me to the game industry.”

  1. So true the guy is so full of himself and no talent. Death Stranding should show that, everyone martyred him when he left Konami ignoring that he was the VP and on the board or that he had interviews taken down with others taking credit for MGS games they worked on because he has to be thought of as the sole creator. He has no idea how to code only how to write and his stories were normally so bad others had to completely rewrite it people like Tomokazu Fukushima. Kojima wanted to make movies now he gets to do so and from his games stories it will such Sony will go under funding him.

    1. Kojima is actually a very very good game developer. He approaches games on many levels.

One of his goals of bringing cinema to gaming has been realized. He may not be the only person who had the dream, but he surely achieved that, most notably with Metal Gear Solid, as the most integrated example of this.

A major issue with so many games today is having such a wide scope and integrating a sense of realism. Since so many popular games are made with unreal 5, incorporate an open world, campaign, skills/leveling, base building, with side quests for replayability and stats, they all kind of become the same thing.

Not that he doesn’t incorporate what might be effective or popular with gamers. He does, but he tends to limit the scope and make a lot of the extra stuff optional. You can play and beat MGSV without even attending to your base. And as for Death Stranding, which I think is a great game, has a very direct and basic objective, quite similar to Mario Bros. I might add, which is walking left and right, while jumping over things. But you can kind of choose how in depth you want to take it. And how complex you want it to go. It does have action, a great story, and smooth mechanics. It’s a very unique vision. My only criticism and that it gets too real for me sometimes because of the sense of isolation you feel traversing the beautiful overpowering landscapes. And it’s only because he did such a great job at creating a unique atmosphere that really pulls me in to that feeling of isolation that keeps my play time limited. I can understand how it might not be for everyone. And who knows, maybe it was a conscious effort on his part, seeing how socially aware he is and how he incorporates certain ideologies into his narratives that promote social well-being.

      1. Yeah no. Guerilla made the gameplay mechanics in DS to Kojima’s awful ideas and yes awful game that flopped but because Sony is insane they gave him money to make a sequel and a PS6 game that he gets to direct a film adaption for. What you said is massive cope and insanity just cult of kojima at its worst game needs to make money and Kojima is full of himself no talent others at Konami carried him.

  2. This is a beautiful reminder of how powerful and influential classic games can be. It’s amazing to see how a simple yet timeless title like Super Mario Bros. inspired Hideo Kojima’s vision and helped shape one of the most creative minds in the gaming industry.
