Square Enix announces it will integrate Google’s generative AI Gemini into popular online game Dragon Quest X

Square Enix has found a use for Google’s generative AI Gemini and will be putting it to use in the popular online game, Dragon Quest X. Gemini will be used in-game as a feature that allows players to have conversations and it will provide helpful assistance such as giving hints about the player’s next destination. The companion character which is named, Oshaberi Slimey, will use the chat function and it automatically generates voice responses and converses with the user. The reason why the team have included it is because the online game has been running for so long that new users may feel lost. Here’s what was said via machine translation.

“It becomes a personal companion so that new players don’t feel lost or alone about where to begin.” Square Enix is also collaborating with Google Cloud to further expand its use of AI” – Takashi Anzai

“AI will have an extremely significant impact on the player experience. I’m convinced it will dramatically transform all games within the next three to five years.” – Yuji Horii

      1. Logical fallacy identification: Fallacy of Equivocation.

The above comment is equating the term “AI” with “Generative AI”, which is now colloquially referred to as simply “AI”. In early video games, AI referred to the pathfinding capacities and abilities of None Playable Characters, or NPCs. This term is different from the AI of today, or Generative AI, which generates images, code, dialogue, etc. based off of prompts users input. These two concepts are not the same, hence the logical fallacy.

This is not a full, in-depth analysis, however it is important to note fallacies in arguments as they are presented.

      2. No, not necessarily. AI, in general, has existed for decades, but Generative AI and its widespread adoption are quite recent, including in game creation. And it’s not about defending or condemning it, but the use of AI in games up to this point is very different from the use of generative AI, which involves creative aspects in addition to technical ones.

      3. This intentionally incorrect interpretation of technology and terms is the stupidest possible take. “AI” in common terms presently refers to overblown LLMs, which have never been a “part of gaming” and are stupid, expensive, unscalable financially, and far from ready to be out in any and everything. Also there’s the theft part as far as the model training.

      4. Are you serious? Always been in games? Maybe in your millennial lifetime. You can’t be that stupid. This planet is screwed.

      1. Exactly my first thought…this is an actual good ude of AI in games. Grew up playing Dragon Warrior and FF. Then strategy games. Then shooters. Now that I’m old as $hit, unlike a bit slower pace. I’m back to dragon Quest…and loving it.

      2. No, it isn’t, because it will lie and be wrong and steal answers from content creators who actually took the time to write guides and tutorials and deny them of revenue. It’s garbage and belongs nowhere in its present, exploitative form.

  1. A chat bot that gives hints about the next destination, I prefer not having lengthy conversations with Npc’s.

  2. All the whinning but all these people mad will still buy their games. Same way they have in the past there is no reason to listen to their anti AI statements. E33, Fortnite, MH Wilds, AC Shadows, BF6, Marvel Rivals, and many others using it even music and Hollywood but the same anti AI people will support it. They can’t even tell the difference.

    1. Obviously the mass hordes dont give a crap. Its why everything degrades, the bulk of buyers dont think about it or the consequences. Its why the current gaming industry is the way it is now.

    2. I hope you enjoy it. I hope you like watching what we love be destroyed. I haven’t played any of the games you mentioned. I don’t listen to your music. I don’t watch your movies. Enjoy, friend.

      1. Well yeah, this should fix it and not have repeated dialogue and just a handful of personality types where some villagers are basically just clones with different names.

  3. completely contradicts their past takes on have fun and explore, now its just tell me what to do next so i can finish, ofc aislop fans will say w/e in here just shows the lack of care or fun in playing a game if u immediately start with a strat guide.

  4. Interesting move by Square Enix integrating Google’s Gemini AI into Dragon Quest X. The AI companion to help new players navigate such a long-running game makes sense. Yuji Horii’s prediction about AI transforming games in the next few years feels spot on. When I’m not following gaming news or checking out new tech in games, I enjoy some online entertainment. A friend recommended checking out Golden Star casino for a solid gaming experience. The platform has a clean interface, loads fast, and deposits are simple. Good variety of games to enjoy during downtime. Worth checking out.
