Super Mario Galaxy 2 update adds new story to Rosalina’s storybook

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been updated to Version 1.4.0 on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The update includes the usual unspecified bug fixes and gameplay adjustments, but surprisingly, without any prior announcement, the update also adds a brand new story to Rosalina’s storybook. After you’ve unlocked the Final Chapter of the base game story, the newly added story will become available after clearing any Galaxy and earning a Power Star. The contents of the new story are unknown, but we suspect it could be related to the recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie, now playing in theaters.

Additionally, since the new story features a new song that plays in the background, the Nintendo Music app has been updated to include it as part of the Galaxy 2 soundtrack.

Latest update: Ver. 1.4.0 (Released April 29, 2026)

General

  • Several issues have been fixed and adjustments made to ensure a smoother gaming experience on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
  • A new story has been added to the storybook. Once Final Chapter is available in the storybook, you can read the new story by clearing any galaxy and earning a Power Star.

Note: The software must be updated to Ver. 1.2.0 or later to play on Nintendo Switch 2.

    1. On the Wii release, 2 did not have a storybook. When the game was released for the Switch 1 and Switch 2, they added a brand new storybook to the game

  1. This is such an absolutely insane thing to add in a random update. I love it lmao

Part of me kind of wishes we’d get random additional pieces of story or content like this in other games. It’s really cool especially for such an old game
