The Pokemon Company has been wanting to increase price of Pokemon games for some time

CentroLeaks has been posting some more interesting information that was discovered during the massive Teraleak. One of the things discovered, but rarely mentioned, is the fact that The Pokemon Company has been wanting to increase the pricing of Pokemon games since Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. Obviously shedloads of copies of mainline Pokemon games are sold and a higher price point would ensure even more profit. Whether this happens with Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves remains to be seen, but we should find out sooner or later if they are heading on this course.

  • The Pokémon Company explicitly wants to encourage people to buy both versions of Pokémon games.
  • They have been wanting to increase the price of Pokémon games from the old $60 price since Sword/Shield, but wasn’t possible back then due to higher prices not being standarized yet in North America.
  • From first 15 weeks of sales: – 41% of players bought both versions of Sun/Moon.
  • 50% of players bought both versions of Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon
  • 23% of players bought both versions of LGPE.

Thanks to CFG for sending in the news tip!

    1. The problem is Game Freak, not The Pokémon Company; they should try using a different developer… especially if Wind and Wave are as technically terrible as the others.

      1. I’m pretty sure the problem IS the Pokemon Company. That new game Game Freak is making that’s coming to ps5 looks incredible.

        1. Lol, 60$ for that quarter baked game should have been sold for 20$ max. Its a game to be ashemed of. Glitches, bugs, ghost cities, more npcs with 0 interactions than with interactions, etc etc.
They sold an alpha staged game in full price, its absurd. And after all that they think its worth more???? Who are those disconnected people???

  1. Imagine if they’d increased the price of Pokémon Scarlet/Violet. What a slap in the face! Unlike many, I don’t have a philosophical problem with increasing the price if you make a game that is actually worth it. I hope that Winds and Waves are exactly that but given they’re on a run of about 4 generations in a row of mediocrity (or worse in the case of SV) I won’t hold my breath.

    1. Unless they start putting actual QUALITY into their games, then Pokemon Legends: Arceus was my very last Pokemon game. The fact that they feel OWED more for products that don’t even deserve their current price tag is laughable. They’re coasting entirely on brand recognition and nostalgia, but that cannot last forever.

    1. lol EXACTLY pokemon has been literally double dipping since the game boy…and out of all the companies who wants to charge more is them? omg

  2. Ummm ZA was worth 5$ it was completely trash in every sence, the dlc was clearly how they rose the price, taking half the game and making it hidden. Behind a pay wall. Look wind and waves looks good so far. But pokemon really needs to step it up.

    1. Even that seems like high praise for the reveal of starters and dressed up Pikachu. We have no indication of the graphical quality let alone stability from a heavily curated teaser that might not be in the final graphics.

  3. If the DLC is a free update, maybe. A game like Mario kart world has been getting updates that could have paid. But Pokemon company is too greedy to listen to fan, they will probally charge for the dlc.

  4. I would buy both versions at launch only if the content was significantly different. And i would only pay more if they didn’t do the new dlc expansion stuff, since for the last two games they did complete versions later on, so now i have no reason to buy these games at launch.

  5. There is no need for the two game system anymore as all the pokemon can fit in one game….no need for the, Yellow, Crystal, Emerald method because we can patch updates through downloads and DLC. Players aren’t trading in person through cables anymore. The old model just doesn’t make sense. But if you charge $69 or $79 for a game…the world better be quality, animations better be fluid and unique to the pokemon, like POLISH THE GAME. They literally putting out “games” in worse condition than OG Red/Blue/Green

  6. Please Stop Supporting Pokemon

Stop Supporting the Pokemon Company They are only going to get worse and never improve if the masses keep throwing them money.

  7. Anonymous Skywalker

Both ZA and SV were one of their better games, yes SV suffered major optimization and bugs but they did improve the games over time with the game running the best on SW2 plus it had the better story compared to the last few gens. ZA was a big step up from Arceus and did fix the issue with gen 6 barely having any Mega evolution battles. Both games made shiny hunting easy with ZA locking shinies by keeping them from despawning and having up to 10 spawning at one point. Both games have the better graphics, environments are meh but better than previous titles. DLC made the game have better value and a way to expand the games, they aren’t call of duty with 80% of the game locked behind multiple paywalls.

      1. It’s one thing to call them mediocre or even bad, but to call them among the worst games ever made is insane stupid. Especially when Gollum, Superman 64, Big Rigs, E.T, and Sonic fucken 06 exist.

  8. They only wanted to increase the price for its games so we can buy one of their versions of Pokemon games. It would be nice if it’s a premium product if they plan to do this for their games.

  9. Maybe if they make a game with even close to modern graphics and isn’t a half baked complete shit show it would be worth it. SV was completely abysmal to play (I would even say unplayable) until S2 and even still in this updated state, there are games on the PS2 that are more technically impressive. They are the most lucrative franchise ever, have some of the all time highest selling games, and they can’t even make a game that would push the limits of a Nintendo gamecube. There are indie games that cost more money to make than mainline pokemon games. I know I speak for millions of people that would agree we would absolutely fork out $80+ for a Pokemon game that was truly modern with some semblance of modern graphics technology and gameplay. “Despite what many think, they are a small development team” .. “it would be too hard to create a new updated 3d model for every pokemon in the Pokedex” .. “they are on strict, super tight development schedules at only 4-5 years maximum” We DO NOT CARE. That is the absolute saddest excuse possible for THE HIGHEST GROSSING IP IN THE HISTORY OF GAMING. Hire more employees and new talent, and get the old guard of people that learned how to code during the days of the Colecovision the hell out of there. You absolutely can afford it. If it’s not an internal gamefreak problem (which lets be real – it absolutely is), go to Nintendo and tell them you are not making another Pokemon game until they give you the resources needed. I guarantee they will help. Better yet, dissolve game freak completely and let Nintendo take over and contract it out to one of their incredible partner development teams. They would absolutely give us something a hell of a lot closer to what we deserve.

  10. it is a disgrace to think these delusional nut jobs that peddle these amateur games would actually think they should increase the price of their manure

  11. Really?! I mean are they not paying attention to all the backlash from other games going up in price? Also, while this new game looks promising, they also need to prove they can make a modern Pokémon game that’s polished.

  12. Let’s meet halfway: Stop making Pokemon games look like they’re made to run on a PS2, and you can get away with a price increase

  13. I decided to look into this situation, and I can confidently say that this information is fake.
This is a document dated seven years ago that explicitly states that prices will not be raised. They considered this as one possible way to offset the decline in sales, but ultimately rejected the idea.

  14. Haha, that’s not what it’s about at all. They were just trying to figure out how to maximize profits from sales in the Switch era. “Let’s Go” was sold at full price solely to compensate for the lack of DLC. In Japan, they’re having trouble selling both games, so they considered raising the price and then offering a discounted bundle. They didn’t go through with this idea because there was a high chance that people would just resell the games separately. Ultimately, they didn’t raise the price because the game would have become more expensive than other Nintendo games, which would have negatively impacted sales.

Spreading misinformation isn’t cool, My Nintendo News.

  15. As usual, Centro Leaks is stirring up panic.
This was a meeting discussing how they should increase copies sold in Japan specifically.
    – Leaving the price as be
    – Increasing the cost of the individual titles
    – Increase the cost of everything
Game Freak directly acknowledged the issue with raising the price, which was the potential of people being turned away by the higher pricing and acknowledging the Double Pack Royalties were likely to remain unchanged which is why there was no price change.
