The legendary Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto has participated in an interview with Famitsu during which he discussed how The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie influenced the teams decision to make new games based on appearances in the movies. Mr. Miyamoto says that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book was developed because of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Star Fox was also developed because of Fox McCloud’s appearance in the same movie.
“I don’t decide everything about the lineup, but we did discuss that ‘we have an idea to include Fox in the script for the movie (‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’), so we definitely want a new Star Fox game.’
Sometimes things get decided after we’ve discussed them. We started working on the first Mario movie (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Princess Peach Showtime around the same time, and we talked about things like, ‘If we have this game, shouldn’t Peach be more energetic in the movie too?’ It was decided early on that Yoshi would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so we decided to make a Yoshi game, and that’s how development of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book began.
It’s a case-by-case situation, but I think we’ll continue to maintain a good relationship between games and other developments.”
So if an Easter egg is in the movie, it will be turned into a video game? So is a new ROB game confirmed? I hope we get some earthbound representation in the third movie, it would make my day.
Principally, I don’t like that. I’m glad we got a Yoshi and (another) Star Fox reboot but I really don’t think movies should dictate what games are made.
So they will do this, but not make a new f-zero because they cant think of anything new to add?
I honestly don’t really want a new f-zero right now, I mean I would love for it to come back. But the FAST series has fufilled my f-zero dreams right now, and the switch 2 already has like one billion racing games, so I wouldn’t really want a new f-zero right now. But I would totally be open to one.
Makes sense to me lmao. Why else would Miyamoto shove StarFox into the movie? Both it and Pikmin are his babies that he so desperately wants to be the next Mario & Zelda. Rail Shooters & Strategy Games just can’t ( and will never ) crack through like he wants them to. They are much better off as film series imo. Or anthology series.
Of course it’s to promote the new remake and draw more attention to the series as a whole. Movies reach far wider audiences than games do as a medium.
I won’t be surprised if the Zelda movie is a loose retelling of Ocarina AND if it heavily influences the next mainline game.
