VGP: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 will be code in box

Video Games Plus, which is North America’s premier independent videogame retailer and distributor, has shared the unfortunate news this morning that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 will ship as a code-in-box release. That’s right, no traditional cartridge or even a Game-Key Card, but simply a code in the box to redeem. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October.

The future of physical gaming should concern every physical game fan… GTA VI — PS5 / Xbox Series X|S Diablo IV — Nintendo Switch 2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — Nintendo Switch 2 All code-in-box releases. And if it’s just a box with a download code inside, VGP won’t be carrying it. We believe physical games should actually be physical games. If you want the disc or cartridge, we’ll be here fighting for it.

  1. The thing that bothers me most (besides the whole “Death of the physical game” thing) is how much storage they inevitably end up taking up. I bought the Final Fantasy Intergrade key card because I got it cheap off of Amazon and it took ages to download 90 GB because Nintendo’s servers are terrible and can’t even saturate my Internet connection. It also takes up the majority of the system memory on the console.

Nintendo needs to start offering 512 GB or 1 TB of system storage. Also why do I have to turn the console off to swap SD cards? What year is this?

    1. might want to check your internet connection, i downloaded FF14 (110Gb) on wifi withing 2h.
people are already crying on the price increase and you want to make them even more expensive?? buy a SD card if you want more… not everyone should pay 100-200 more because you are to lazy to swap sd cards

      1. Have you checked the price of SD cards? They aren’t cheap. Better to pay that cost upfront for faster internal storage in my opinion. I agree with you that it shouldn’t be forced though. Have multiple storage configurations or a Pro option. Could even have a budget “Switch 2 Lite” with less internal storage. Options are good thing to have. If you look at Xbox or PlayStation do they have just one product SKU? No, they have multiple options to suit everyone.

        1. So I actually like and I think it’s smart that ever since the Wii and originally they were going to start this with the GameCube that Nintendo gives you an okay amount of storage and then lets you upgrade at your own budget pace. Because as you said storage is more expensive. Do you want the base level Nintendo switch 2 to be $500 or $900? Yeah I simply got the switch 2 with my Mario kart World earlier this year and then months later when I had the money I got the 1 TB card right when I was about to run out of internal storage and problem is fucking solved. And I also want to know if you haven’t noticed every generation. There’s been less console variety in terms of like internal storage because they found out during the PlayStation 4 generation that people will always mass buy the basis. Cheapest set and ignore the other tiers. That’s literally what happened to the Wii U everyone because there wasn’t really much of a price difference. Bought the black one and ignored the white one for that exact reason. Same thing happened with PlayStation 4 where people bought the one with the decent amount of memory and ignored the lower and upper-tiered options. And that’s why you don’t see much variety anymore because consumers would rather get one thing than try to juggle multiple SKUs in their purchasing decisions. The only time they’re willing to do that is when there’s like special editions like the fire emblem balls edition or the god of War penis edition. Then they will consider a different unit.

  2. Activision has always been the worst company in terms of physical releases. All the their recent games have been code in boxes. Even that Spyro collection didn’t have all the games on the disc/cartridge. I am pretty sure most of their original switch releases required a download outside of the crash games.

  3. Considering the history of call of duty, this is the least surprising thing ever. Just as a heads up, all the recent call of duties have literally been code on a disc and I’m pretty sure that every single version of this game is going to be a code in a box. My curiosity is that the reason why call of duty is normally so huge is it’s because the loader preloads all the current games on there which includes warzone. So I’m highly curious that because the switch 2 doesn’t have things like warzone on it. If the file size will be smaller overall, never mind any of the other reductions they would have to do in order to get it running on the system, which usually is a smaller file size in general compared to their rivals.
