Mario Kart 8 Deluxe updated to Version 4.0.1 (patch notes)

Nintendo has released another update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, following the surprisingly robust 4.0.0 update last month. The latest update, Version 4.0.1, doesn’t add any fresh new content, but it does fix a few important bugs when playing on Nintendo Switch 2. Most notably, the number of item boxes and obstacles should now be fully consistent online with other racers on the original Switch, as apparently Switch 2 players previously had an unintentionally increased amount of them appear on the track. The full patch notes for Version 4.0.1 can be found below.

Latest update: Ver. 4.0.1 (Released October 13, 2026)

General
  • Fixed an issue where the number of obstacles or Item Boxes would increase during Online Play and Wireless Play on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.
  • Fixed an issue where players could not select a user who is registered to the system when playing with two players for Online Play and Wireless Play.
  • Fixed an issue where some of the Star Bits would not be displayed when driving on Wii Rainbow Road on Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Fixed an issue where the game would close unexpectedly when certain conditions were fulfilled.
