Miyamoto Confirms He’s Working On An Unannounced ‘Original’ Game

Shigeru Miyamoto has told Zoomin Games that despite working on Pikmin 3 and Luigi’s Mansion 2 he’s hard at work on his undisclosed original project. Miyamoto wouldn’t disclose what platform the new project is for, but we should hear more about it during E3 in June as Miyamoto previously stated he would reveal it this year.

Speaking about that mysterious new project, Miyamoto said “If you ask me, ‘Is it too much pressure to try to come out with something new?’ I have to say no, I’m enjoying myself.”

“Each creator has his or her own field for which he or she is particularly good at. I’m not saying that I am particularly bad at making the very photo-realistic video games. But when it comes to the realistic games, you have to create something familiar. I personally want to make something really different.”

      1. Stop talking out of your ass, he already said it’s a new original game. Great job pointing out the obvious.

    1. This is interesting, I’d love to see what Miyamoto can come up with on his own. It’ll probably be like Pikmin. That is, in the sense that Pikmin was a smaller, yet completely original game that Miyamoto came up with himself. I hear Mr. Miyamoto came up with the idea for Pikmin by observing the wildlife in his garden; maybe this game will be something fun like that.

This is why Nintendo consoles and games have created their own market, and sold well worldwide. Nintendo is a relatively small Japanese technology company that does very well for themselves. They create games and experiences that are deliberately different to keep themselves relevant even among more powerful systems. This has obviously worked for Nintendo because of stellar first and second party games that actually utilize their hardware correctly. Very few third party developers even cared because they couldn’t look beyond an annalists’ chart of “only “casual” games sell well on Wii.” Here’s any 3rd party game developer: “It will cost too much to develop original games for Wii instead of just porting them from the other systems; so we just won’t develop compelling software for Wii and make Nintendo look bad.”
Fortunately, with Wii U, Nintendo is going to create vicissitude that will change the gaming dynamic. 3rd party developers now have no excuse not to put their most advanced games on Wii U foremost.

    1. No, I think it’s a brand new project, not just a new game. Whether it will spawn a series – only time will tell

    1. Well, Nintendo could seriously use a new one. They’ve got Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi, Fire Emblem, and Golden Sun. Beyond those, not much else.

I’d love to see an original RPG series from Miyamoto.

  1. so its not going to be uber realistic? not a problem really, we have third parties for that, no actually we have different nintendo developers for that :) so its all good, wind waker wasnt uber realistic, still one of the best games ever, obviously this is new and not zelda, but could be just as awesome :D

  2. Hope he goes back to his roots and keep on surprising us! Realistic games these days just make the gaming industry lazy….Games take no longer than 10 hours…with exception here and there…I don’t like it. Skyrim, Zelda SS, Xenoblade all 50+ hrs games….and they rock….The weight HD graphics put on development do not benefit other very importany aspects of games YET. I do like a beautiful world with a rocks that can break, but if that means 10 hrs less gameplay?

Hope he’ll be able to address this issue, hope some of you understand what I mean, not ranting about any games, but HD does sting a bit in what we get for return.

    1. I agree. A lot of visually amazing games, such as Dead Space 2, seem a little short and only last about 10 hours or so. Developers shouldn’t focus too hard on graphics if other parts of the game would lack because the effort wasn’t put in to them because of it.

  3. Hmmm, well what’s he been doing recently? Since we know random things inspire him, like how Pikmin was inspired by his gardening.
And of course who could forget that time he had to go save a princess. :-)

    1. He revealed at the last E3 his secret hobby is measuring and even had a Wii U measuring demo thing at the show. I doubt this has anything to do with that but is the only clue we have so far.

      1. I heard that by swimming he got the idea of either making a swimming game or a new Wave Race game. I really hope it’s a new Wave Race game for the 3DS!

  4. Do we know what it will be for? Wii U? 3DS? Or something older?

Either way, I’m sure it will utilize the hardware’s technology flawlessly, and I will most likely buy it :)

  6. “When it comes to the realistic games, you have to create something familiar. I personally want to make something really different.”

    Awesome quote, just saying…

    1. Except that was specifically ifentified as not an actual game at E3 2011 by Reggie onstage. People need to stop forgetting that.

  7. NEW ORIGINAL that means NEW IP not current ones or rumored games.

Just Like Pikmin for Gamecube, Brain Age and Nintendogs for DS, Wii Series for Wii. Each system they make will have up to 5 new IPs.

  8. Considering Miyamoto’s track record, I’m sort of excited for this. Here’s hoping it’s a proper new franchise and not just a small download only game.

  9. zant's faithful servant

Okay little iferencing here, but let’s look it Miyamoto-san’s past(if you call him “shiggy” i will fucking cut you; tres disrespectful) to determine some basic knowloedge about his future; he’s made his kick ass platformer (mario), an epic action/adventure (zelda), action-packed shoot-em-up (metroid), an EXTREMELY imaginative rts (pikmin), each of which has a great main character that fits the game (mario, link, samus, olimar, respectively). his last options are rpg, tbs, life simulator, survival horror, and sandbox. or, he could go one of the two routes minecraft did: drop you in a world and let you live, or make up something completely new. given that this is miyamoto-san, it’s not horror, rpg, Simulator, and probably not tbs. and he wouldn’t copy mindcraft. therefore, it’s most likely either sandbox or some brand spankin’ new genre. i’m leaning toward new genre. of course it’ll be amazing and have the perfect character for whatever the fuck he makes up! :)

    1. Miyamoto did not create Metroid. He only helped a bit with the Prime series. Yoshio Sakamoto and Gunpei Yokoi are responsible for the creation of Samus Aran and Kid Icarus too.
