The co-host of the G4’s gaming show X-Play, Morgan Webb, believes that Nintendo’s main problem with the Wii U is its name. Although it has been almost a year since the Wii U was revealed, Webb thinks that people still don’t know that it is different from a Wii. Webb also believes that it is going to be difficult to convince people that playing a Wii U could be more fun than gaming on an iPad. If this is true, how should Nintendo distinguish the Wii U from any other gaming platform?
The Name is good.
There, leave it be
oh and Morgan Webb… where’s my Sandwich?
The name is ok and i get the direction they wanted to go in but honestly it isn’t that good of a name
G4+2=G6.
Wii+U=Wii U.
Get it?
Clever.. Clever
no i don’t get it the top part confuse me
If you know “like a G6” song, you will understand the top part
Are you shitting me? That bitch barely knows anything about video games.
Exactly…
Good video.
This.
If people think this, then they are just dumb.
No, they just don’t follow the news about it like we do…
It should be made clear to everybody, and the name is shitty too. Looking forward to the Wii U, but I mean… Not bcuz of its name
that’s the problem they don’t do enough search and make there self look stupid on the internet
parents will be confused. they will just think is a wii with a tablet. they need to make it clear is a new system or else we will see the same problem that the 3ds had.
Interesting point about the parents, but heaven forbid they actually research something they purchase for their kids. I am glad the name isnt changing, because Im tired of companies catering to the ignorant/lazy.
Point is that they won’t do that. A company sales shouldn’t be depended on whether or not buyers inform themselves, they should inform them. Changing the name of the Wii U to something different could do that, even Wii 2 would be better… From a business perspective naming the console with a confusion name is just doing bad business. I can’t count how many times a heard a parent tell his child he couldn’t get a 3DS because they already had a DS in the game stores in my neighbourhood (I’m always lurking around there like a perv to nab some little kids streetpass data :)).
This is nothing like the 3ds problem. 3ds and ds at first sight really looked the same whereas the wii and the wii-u tablet don’t look the same at all. There is a reason why Nintendo doesn’t show too much of the wii-u console unit and probably don’t care if parents think the wii-u is just a tablet. That’s why I think you won’t be able to buy the tablet separately at least at the beginning, so that parent just go and buy the “nintendo tablet” which comes with a white thing you hook to the TV.
Why are they stupid?
In my opinion a product should be able to show that it’s something entirely different, so even people who are not that much into it can tell that it’s new, right away at first look. I for myself am not really interested in doing a research every single time I want to buy something just to be able to tell if it’s new or not.
And people are also confused as to why G4 exists…
XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!
ha!
It was useful at one point, but then 2005 and new Comcast head Neal Tiles happened.
A wild Neal Tiles has appeared!
Neal Tiles used RUIN!
It’s super effective!
Ok, fan boys… calm down. You honestly think Wii U is a good name. It’s as stupid as the Xbox 360 and the PS3.
Whats Wrong with PS3 its got a sensible name (playstaion 3)
U spelled playstation wrong :)
You spelled you wrong -.-
PS3 isn’t a bad name. Uncreative, but not bad. Xbox 360 is stupid though. WiiU is kinda dumb also TBH but I guess I can live with it…
The name will always be fine if you heard about it frequently.
I completely agree with Miss Von Veeb. The Wii U is a terrible name and I’m still not sure how it differs form a shiny wii.
We as gamers understand the difference between a WII and a WIIU.. but there’s a hole market out there that doesn’t aknowledge the excistance or difference within them… I know the difference because I’m constantly looking for more information and I’m interested in videogames, but we can’t expect all the people in the world do this.
that’s it… …I’m a sales-promoter in europe for the 3DS and many people thinks it’s a DS…just with 3D.
And I know the difference because Wii doesnt has U and Wii U has U, simple like that…
…but people are stupid ;D
Many people out there that doesn’t even know how to use a PC or laptop and internet but they own a gaming hardware
I think everyone underestimates people. All Nintendo has to do is show the console this E3, the updated controller, and all the games coming out for it. Consumers will see the difference.
A friend of mine suggested a minor but great name change to “U” I’d love it.
Once again G4 proves the only good show they have is Ninja Warrior Japan and that if not for that, they would not have a single good show in their line up. I still have this sneaking suspicion that they are nothing more than a mouthpiece for the xbox.
I had this problem when trying to sell the 3DS. Customers did not know it was different then the DS. They thought it was a DS with 3D added to it and not a new system. The Wii U will have the same problem.
:D …the same thing happened to me (Europe – Germany)
BS the same thing with the GBA people are just retards nowadays
Yeah. They will think its a Wii with U added… Or not.
Morgan is just mad because Nintendo won’t be on their network on Tuesday.
What? G4 isn’t broadcasting the Nintendo press conference? Sickr or Alba, can you please confirm this?
its true!
I just checked their website and they have the Nintendo press conference down for Tuesday 12 pm Eastern/ 9 AM Pacific.
Not surprised. This happened with the 3DS. No one actually knew what is was until around christmas.
Since they called their previous console the Nintendo Wii, I personally think they should have called their new console the Nintendo U. The name is great, but if people are still confuse, why not call it the U?..
One of the reasons why G4 is losing viewers– failed programming. I missed Web Soup.
G4 has been know for saying really dumb shit in the pass so this doesn’t surprise me.
WHY THE FUCK TO FAGGATS KEEP BRINGING UP THIS FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT IPAD LIKE ITS ANY KIND OF COMPETITION FOR NINTENDO FUCK OFF WITH YOUR TAMPONS IM SICK OF IT
Either you’re 9 years old or mentally retarded… stay the hell in school loser!!!!!
Honestly, I think the name is a problem. It’s like with the 3DS, a lot of people believed it was just a new version of the DS. Which makes sense since there were, like, four versions of the Nintendo DS. I could see why they would think that. But I’m sure some people will think the same about the Wii U.
And, honestly, I just hate the name Wii to begin with so I want to see it changed. There’s a reason a lot of people kind of laughed at the Wii. The name is so non-threatening. They might as well named it the Nintendo Rainbows & Sunshine. The Wii U should have a name that lets everyone know that they mean business. That they’re a serious competitor. Wii or Wii U doesn’t really scream that to me.
Personally, I’d be okay with the Nintendo 6 / Nintendo VI or N6 / NVI (pronounced like envy, maybe?). Yes, it’s boring. But Nintendo has been around such a long time that, that number shows seniority. It seems like with the Wii they were trying to show that they’re “young and fun” but they’re not. Nintendo has been around since the 80s. Instead of trying to be the “cool dad,” they should just be like, “Yeah, we’re older. But we know what we’re doing. That’s why we’re on our 6th home console.” They should stop trying to be “hip” and just bend Sony and Microsoft over their knee.
Nintendo VI, N Vi for short. I like it, it’s reminiscent of the N64 and the time that nintendo ruled gaming.
If we had the annual smartphone/tablet scenario during the Game Boy Advance, I’m pretty certain it would have had the same problem.
EXACTLY.
The name simply sucks, most consumers have no idea of what the Wii U is actually.
Us gamers have a better understanding of it, becuase we are actually interested in this stuff and follow the news.
The average consumer thinks its just a new controller for the Wii.
Well think of it this way- 300$ for a system with hd versions of nintendos iconic characters, or 500 for an iPad with mediocre at best games
There is nothing to see here people. Morgan Webb is a troll, she has been trolling Nintendo hard ever since she poorly reviewed Metroid other M and Zelda skyward sword. Now she is trolling the Wii U.
Did people get confused between PS1 & PS2??
What about PS2 & PS3??
How about Xbox & Xbox360??
Was there mass confusion between NES & SNES???
Why will the Wii and the WiiU be any different. She is a major troll and I am s0o0o0o0o sick and tired of people trolling every little thing Nintendo do. Its just a name.
I’m just as much not a fan of her, but I have to point out she didn’t review M:OM. Abbie Heppe did.
exactly this is not the first time.
I am with you, her comment assumes people are as stupid as she is. No one is confused about iPhone and iPad, people are harder to confuse than that. One thing is clear Morgan Webb is vigorously, and strongly against Nintendo and I have to wonder why. I think it is related to people wanting video games to be realistic. When people say “this FPS is more real than that one” I want to say grow up. If you want to play a simulation for shooting people go play paintball. G4 is biased towards computer games. Computer games always tried to be simulations for life. I have no interest in simulation games, they are not fun. Nintendo invented the blueprint for fun games, and Morgan Webb hates it.
Just because she didn’t like Metroid other M and Skyward Sword it doesn’t make her a troll. People have opinions and as long as they’re no fanboys/-girls they are not forced to like every single thing about Nintendo. And I don’t see how she’s trolling the WiiU, she is telling the truth. A lot of people are mistaking the WiiU for simply the controller, they don’t know it’s an entire system.
Simply calling it Wii 2 would have made things more clear, I guess. Numbers are not as easy to be mistaken as anything else. That’s why people didn’t get confused about Playstation 1 and 2. Because 2 means it’s the next version, since it comes after 1.
People didn’t get confused about NES and SNES because it got from normal to Super. Becoming Super means there was a development, advancement or something like that. So that was easy to understand as well. I can’t think of any explanation for the Xbox360 though, maybe it wasn’t clear to everyone that it’s something new neither at the beginning, back then, I don’t know.
Anyway, as well as you are sick and tired of people “trolling every little thing Nintendo does”, there are a lot of people who are sick and tired of you fanboys/-girls taking every single opinion, which doesn’t fit yours, as an insult to Nintendo.
no. she just doesn’t have a lot of good credibility with nintendo games, like in one of her mario galaxy reviews calling it “too cartoony” and the rest sounds like backhanded compliments.
Hm, maybe cartoony games aren’t her type of games ? Eventhough I do not understand at all why anyone would call Mario Galaxy “cartoony”, because it definitely is not cartoony. But with the name of the WiiU she does have a point, in my opinion, that is.
Eh, the name is not my favorite. But, that’s what we all said about the Wii and look how that turned out.
Also, Morgan Webb is an idiot. I’ve never seen someone try so hard to be so cool/hip/smart/different and be so epic fail about it. She really needs to go away.
Nintendo would be stupid to abandon the Wii name. It was the most successful console of this generation. WHY DO PEOPLE NOT GET THAT?!
because of these dumb#$$ so call “hardcore” don’t like the name that it attracts causal…um let mii ask a question? how bought more games for Nintendo casuals or hardcore? answer casual, so why people think this will be a kinect version of nintendo?
This is just the whole Wii fiasco all over again. People will complain about the name, controller, etc. just like they did with the original Wii. Nintendo is still going to make a crap load of money. But the people that should know better by now obviously don’t think that.
The only reason why casual games get sold more than “hardcore” games is because parents prefer them for their children. Would be weird if parents would buy games of the like of Call of Duty for their children of the age of 8 to 13. Unlike Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft do not offer that many child-friendly games. In fact, they barely offer any of them, whereas Nintendo has heaps of them for each of their platforms. That’s why Sony and Microsoft are considered more “serious”, “mature” and “for adults and real gamers” than Nintendo.
I supose calling it Wii U was always gunna confuse people, just like it probably confused people about the 3DS thinking it was another version of a DS.
However I think it’s cool that both the home and handheld consoles are following from the previous names, it’s cool because both are doing it at the same time. I think next gen (in like 5-6 years time), Nintendo should use a completely new name for their handheld and home console to avoid confusion.
At the same time, most gamers will understand it and the market originally is aimed at us gamers, then as a wider market eventually people will understand it, there’s no rush for the wider public to buy the console within it’s first year as we’ve seen with people still buying Wii’s and DS’s now.
It’s funny how Nintendo suffer from this problem with the casuals when at the same time they understand the difference between the multiple different versions of iPhone or iPad. When it suits your agenda I guess….
Basically the gaming media hates Nintendo. They hate the only console maker that focuses on the younger gamer. Nintendo tries to be different from sony & microsoft yet the media still hates them. How can you hate the company that brought us Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus, and so on and so on. We know they hate the Wii and its controller, they hated the GC and N64. The Wii U isn’t even out yet and people are nickpicking at everthing about the system. Who cares what they call it, let’s focus on the games. I doubt 100% that the name will cause any confusion what so ever.
Yeah, everyone hates Nintendo and anything concerning Nintendo. It’s unwanted by everyone, that’s why it doesn’t sell at all.
They should of just called it NES HD!!!…x
I have family that are not gamers, and they find out about consoles being of a new generation by the games having the big “3DS” label on them instead of the “Nintendo DS” the older games had. It just takes time
The Nintendo conspiracy is real people (Gamespot; IGN; G4 & many more) are constantly attacking Nintendo, their consoles and their games on a regular basis. Thank God for sites like this one but sometimes I will this type of news wasn’t reported here. Its aggravating and depressing all at the sametime :(

The name comment I get, but having to convince people it’s “more fun than gaming on an iPad?
This is coming from the one who said she wasn’t impressed by Nintendo’s E3 2010 conference, so I hesitate to take much of anything she says seriously.
Wow, ok the second comment about the sandwich was completely unnecessary since I know the reference is to her as a woman and kitchen. That shit is old, immature and as sexist as it can be. As for Morgan may be right. Wii U is a great name, but people who have no idea about gaming will not understand the difference. This may lead to less sales sadly enough… Same thing with the 3DS, some parents bought the DSi to their kids instead of the 3DS due to the DS part in the name. I can’t stand G4 but they may be right about that.
haha i see you like my comment X)
well that bitch needs to learn her place.
Nintendo made the same mistake with the 3DS. People just thought it was another DS, but they were trying to market it as a completely different system. I had a friend last week, who even still, thinks that the Wii-U is just the controller. Nintendo needs to smarten up with their naming.
o trust mii when the games come out people will know the wii u as a hardcore system.
if they’re not gonna change the name at least change the color(Black and red would look sick IMO) and market it so that people see it’s a whole new console. say “It’s a Whole NEW console” in a commercial if you have to.
While I appreciate what you’re ultimately saying, your color suggestion would do nothing to convince people it’s a different console as the Wii also has a black and red version.
Morgan Webb is anti Nintendo, famously anti Wii, Morgan Webb is biased, prejudiced, and unprofessional. I have no respect for her opinion. She probably can’t beat any Super Mario game. She has no creditials as a gamer. Her constant blatant attacks on Nintendo are proof she has mental and psychological problems
And it doesn’t just come down to Nintendo, either. She’s just generally out to rip on everything to keep up an “elite” image. Frankly, she does a disservice to female gamers everywhere, and Abbie Heppe isn’t any better.
G4 hates anything nintendo to begin with so they can go suck off Microsoft some more….not EVERYTHING touch is “like an ipad” 1. ipad isnt even close to the best fucking tablet so ppl need to stfu abt it, second the ipad has NO buttons and NO NFC so tight off the bat its got 2 strikes. People want CONTENT not short bursts of touching the screen
The most impressive thing about Nintendo is how much negative groupthink they inspire. It’s almost like if these people will it, they think Nintendo will finally (this time, really!) fail.
THATS TROLL TALK!
The simple fact remains…it’s not true. Anyone with a brain can tell it’s different from the Wii in a number of ways. I should not have to elaborate. Just google the name for instance. It’s too bad these show hosts and so called video game experts don’t give the general public and video game community enough credit for figuring things out on their own. You don’t need a degree in video game specs to discern the difference between the Wii and the Wii U.
Hopefully Nintendo shows the console unit much more this year, because that’s what caused the confusion last year despite the fact their press release said “console” and they used the word “console” multiple times up to the reveal.
It’s a “U” attached to the fucking name. You don’t need to be a fucking gamer to understand that. That’s like people saying that adding the letter “e” to the word “at” doesn’t change its meaning, EVEN THOUGH IT DOES. Mario Bros. is similar to the name Super Mario Bros., but nobody is getting confused over THAT. Maybe people need prefixes instead of suffixes to really know the difference or something. You know, just in case they can’t use their FUCKING BRAINS FIRST.
And who can blame Nintendo for wanting to capitalize on the Wii’s success? It’s natural that their next console would be an extension of the Wii; otherwise the Wii just sticks out as a sore thumb. Besides, the Wii is similar to the NES in terms of what it represents, much like how the Wii U seems to be similar to the SNES in terms of what it represents. The SNES was the direct successor to the NES. The Wii U is the direct successor to the Wii. Not that hard.
Exactly. As I told STSH (you can actually see him mention this on “The Two Nintendos”) Nintendo has a tendency to release their home consoles in twos. The first establishes their direction going forward, and the second is the beefed-up successor.
From what I’ve experienced so far, what this person says is completely true.
A lot of people seem to think that the WiiU is just the tablet-controller instead of an entirely new gaming platform. And I guess the choice of the name does play a big role in this misunderstanding. I personally don’t like the name that much, but what’s worse is that it seems to be the main reason why people think it’s not a new gaming system, but simply the controller. Nintendo should have thought of another name, I think.
One thing Nintendo can do is show the console unit as much as possible during their E3 conference this year. They can also verbally address the change to make sure no one leaves the Nokia Theater confused like last year.
By change, I meant how the similar-looking Wii U console is different from the Wii console.
Yea, E3 is a good chance to show off their stuff and make things more clear to the audience. But I guess that anyone who is interested in E3 already does know that the WiiU is the system itself, not just the controller. So I doubt that it will change much about the whole situation, people who do not know those basic facts probably won’t be interested in E3 and therefore they most likely won’t watch it.
The folks who perpetuated the misinformation last year, though, will be reporting more solid information this year, and this is definitely the time of year where game news has the widest reach.
Still, there’s going to be the ill-informed parent tre802001 describes or someone with a similar limitation, and certainly nothing’s going to fix that.
It should become obvious to people soon enough.
Wii: (shows image of Mii Channel) Wii U: (shows Zelda Wii U Demo)
Anyone who can’t see the difference should not buy anything.
Thats what E3 is for, to understand better.
I have to make this clear. When people say parents will get confuse, that is true. I’m sure when the Super Nintendo came out my mom said you have one. When the Playstation 2 came out, I’m sure parents told their children they had one. It is a name. Unless you follow a console, you will not know what a new one is. Same way with games. I bet parent’s said you already have Call of Duty. They wouldn’t know the different versions of that. The same with GTA or any game that’s has a sequel or more.
1-Different name
2-Different console
3-Different controller
4-Different specs
5-Different online
What else can Nintendo do? Call it the “not-a-Wii”?
How should Nintendo distinguish the Wii U from any other gaming platform?
By making Nintendo games.
The Wii U’s target audience (anyone who reads any gaming magazine currently being written or visits any current gaming news website) will know what the Wii U is and that it’s NOT a Wii. Grandma Smith looking for Christmas items at Target… yeah, she’ll be confused.
Honestly, after the 3DS fiasco, I am really surprised they didn’t change the name…
Morgan Webb is an idiot, and makes watching the show, X-Play, unbearable. She’s supposed to be a professional. You would think it would be a professional’s job to research the subject matter so they can inform the public. She is very anti-Nintendo. They don’t even pay attention when it comes to Nintendo. At last year’s E3 when they were covering Nintendo’s press conference and the unveiling of the Wii U, I saw a perfect example of this. After watching the conference, where Nintendo referred to Wii U as a new console/platform at least 5 times, after it was over and they were giving their thoughts, they were like “Is it a new controller for Wii? Nintendo didn’t make themselves clear.”
I was sitting at home watching, and even though I was screaming excited about the Wii U, I didn’t get confused and lose track of what they were saying. G4 have a problem with Nintendo in general, whenever a new iPad is on the way, or something new from Sony or Microsoft, you’ll hear about it everyday, even if it’s just a rumour. Something new from Nintendo? It will be lucky if it gets some space on the ticker that used to run on the bottom of the screen. Morgan is a snob and her attitude stinks. I can’t take anything she says seriously. Leave luck to heaven.
I’ll be honest. I’m an avid gamer and when I saw the new controller plus other regular Wii controllers, I had myself wondering ‘Is this a new system or just a new controller?’, but when they showed the games reel and demo I knew it was a new system. These video game journalists just say what the majority/press says these days.
The gaming community (aside from Nintendo fans) seems to have hated Nintendo because of the wide perception that Nintendo only catered to the casuals this gen.
But if these so called “professionals” would do any research they would know that the line of thought is just plain wrong. What it comes down to is laziness. They don’t want to have to do any kind of work, Nintendo must hand them everything on a platter.
Instead of just saying it’s a new console 5 times in your press conference, make a giant neon banner that says “NEW CONSOLE!”. They’ll like that. And to make things even easier for them, Nintendo should stop being Nintendo and become Sega or a Sony/MS clone. That would solve all of their problems.
