Smash Bros Wii U Probably Won’t Feature More Characters

Smash Bros series creator Masahiro Sakurai has told Nintendo Power that Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS probably won’t feature a host of new characters, because the team want to focus on quality, rather than quantity. Sakurai says that he would rather refine the existing roster, instead of adding additional characters.

“It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’ There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive.

“In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.”

          1. This, I mean common nintendo get with DLC. And yeah I want them to balence it out more then anything but if you dont have more characters then what’s the point? And it’s probably just me but I feel like they are kind of rushing it, 7 years of brawl hope its 7 for this game.

            1. I agree. New characters are what get me excited for the new games..

Seriously, what I would give to see Krom from the new FE fighting alongside Marth and Ike……

          2. As long as you don’t have to pay like with Darth Vader on Soul Calibur IV. But custom characters would be nice, like with SSBB but an official feature.

    1. you shouldn’t make video games, you and many others only go on about rosters when in reality what determines whether the next smash is a great game is the quality of gameplay.

      1. Yes, but if you didn’t notice, he said “change of direction”. I’m sorry but if this doesn’t worry you then your quality of game speech is illogical. Smash has something that doesn’t need to be changed, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but he wants to change the series towards something different, and that’s never a good sign, especially when it comes to already awesome games.

        1. just want to say that...

if you want to play the same game, play Brawl!

This is not Call of Duty, it’s a NEW game!

  1. I’m disappointed. That means no Ghirahim as a playable character? Not cool. At all.
Sakurai, come on, you can squeeze at least four more characters into the game. Please?

    1. No,that doesn’t mean no Ghirahim as a playable character. It means that he will change characters and modify the roster but the maximum limit of characters will be the same as Super Smash Bros. Brawl,36 characters.

      1. thank you! the title is misleading. Yes they will have new characters but they will probably replace some of the older ones (hopefully none of the original 12).

What Sakurai is saying makes perfect sense. I rather have perfected, characters that feel unique than have a bunch of clones or Luigified characters like Melee (and, from the looks of it, All Stars Battle Royal).

They can’t keep adding without removing.

                1. Why not just take what makes him better and apply it to regular Link instead? Seems like a waste to have two Links if one is going to play better than the other.

          1. No. No. Yes. No, and NO!
that’s merely your opinion. but in MY opinion, i love Mr. Game & Watch (my favorite character, i love playing with him), Snake is awesome, R.O.B. is meh, Jigglypuff is one of the original 12, she can’t be replaced! and Toon Link… c’mon! is The Wind Waker! how come you don’t want Toon Link? yes, he is a clone of Link, but the truth is he’s better than Link.

          2. Are you serious? Those Characters should stay.Their is no Smash bros without Jigglypuff (Even though I can’t use her) Snake is good, His Down Smash Grenade plant is the key to his strategy. Rob just Owns Mario. Toon link can get Quick Hits on a opponent hes the best at Stamina mode. Mr game & Watch’s hammer is Beast. I’m glad my Kirbys not in that list.

          3. Mr. Game & Watch= The beginning of Nintendo making video games, so no.
Snake=Guest character for Brawl. I bet he and Sonic will be removed.
R.O.B.=underrated. If you read, you will find out that he basically got the video game industry back on track after the video game crash of 1983. R.O.B. must stay.
Jigglypuff=One of the Original 12. Can not/should not/will not be removed.
Toon Link: Eh, if his moveset is refined, he COULD stay, but I would prefer to see him replaced with someone more unique and deserving.

        1. The Wii U game disc has 25GB of space. That’s PLENTY of space to add more characters without removing any. *sigh* and here I was hoping to play as Dark Samus in the next Smash Bros.

          1. Dark Samus!!! I wanted them to put her in Brawl…Alas it never happened…
I also REALLY want Ghirahim in the new Smash!

          2. It’s not a matter of space. It’s to prevent Meta Knight type bans like with Brawl. Having 30+ characters balance each other well is very hard as it is.

        2. There really are no clones in ssbm or ssbb. Characters like Fox and Falco, while aesthetically similar, have completely different playstyles due to the different effects of their moves. I can’t speak much for Toon/Young Link since I didn’t play them in ssbm or ssbb, but Roy/Marth were also very different characters.

There is no reason to not have more characters along with a more balanced feel. It does take more time, obviously, but Nintendo should be aiming to make the series the best it can be.

      2. They announced that no more than 50 characters, they will probably add some more but as they said in order to enter in a higher competition between xbox and playstation they need more quality after all there’s more awesome games coming after the new brawl. and dont worry nintendo doesnt run out of ideas that easily.

    2. Ghirahim only appeared in one game, so even if there would be more chracters added, he shouldn’t be in there.

        1. Yeah, let’s take the completely generic villain instead of the unique (western-wise) villain who managed to be pretty kick-ass.

        1. Don’t even say “And then there’s R.O.B….” Do you even know what it did to the industry back in 1983? He is more deserving than Ghirahim, Geno, Shadow, K. Rool and most other common “Shoe ins.”

  2. So, they’re going to focus on the quality of the actual game engine, and not the amount of characters it has? I’m okay with this.

      1. While they are focusing on the engine, I hope they improve the combo system of the game so that all characters have at least three or four different types of combos to mix-&-match during combat.
Heck, they could make it work off of the Smash system, too.
Get a Smash Attack to half-charge[full wouldn’t be do-able because it’s too easily dodged, character would flash white briefly at half-charge], and if it hits, it would start up a combo string that is inescapable for its duration, one that could be manipulated with varying stick movements and ended with one special attack from the character’s roster.
Think Marth’s Sword Dance and the various ways it can be performed depending on the way you hold the stick when using the move, only linked into a half-charge Smash Attack, that can’t be DI’d out of once the combo starts, that ends with one of the 5 B button specials of the character using it.
I think a lot of people would like to see something like that; it would add some depth to an already-deep series.

    1. But some of the characters have the same set moves as an another with a different animation, I rather they think of different set moves for each individual character rather then flooding the already existing huge roster with more of the same fighters

      1. THEY’RE NOT THE SAME!!!!!!!
The moves may look the same, but the moves have different effects (knockback, direction, etc) that change their playstyle dramatically. Look at Fox and Falco.
Falco’s reflector knocks people up, allowing him to combo them with his spike, while fox’s hits people to the side, allowing him to wavedash and combo them completely differently.

    1. Agree. I love Nintendo but fail the worst at times with the recent moves: Friend-Codes still existing; no new characters in Smash Bros.; the thought that a Zelda title will not be released at Launch like it was during the Wii; a lot of kiddie games still formulating instead of going back to the majority of hardcore gamers who grew up from Nintendo… It’s just making me hope things go well, instead of me saying it will like I use to say.

      1. >implying this has anything to do with Nintendo
Hal made the first two then Project Sora made Brawl and are making the new one. Nintendo helps fine-tune the game a bit and publishes it. Most decisions are made by majorly by Project Sora and more specifically, Sakurai.

Zelda not being released at the launch of the WiiU shouldn’t disappoint you because unless you want a rushed piece of shit on the WiiU, then I don’t see how that would disappoint you that it’s not at launch. We DID just get Skyward Sword last Nov.

        1. Project sora didn’t make brawl. Sora ltd made brawl with the help of monolith soft and som other company. But Project sora is making the new super smash. And 77 % of project sora is owned by Nintendo and the rest is owned by Sora ltd. So technically Nintendo is making the new Super smash. I alson think Nintendo owned Hal when they made the original super smash. But i’m 100% sure they were owned by Nintendo when melee was developed.

      2. if all the games we wanted came out at launch we would have nothing to look forward to we would have fun with the wii u playing all our favorite games for about a year then get bored of it and it would seem like the biggest waste of money be patient and you will be rewarded

      3. I enjoy the friend code system on the 3DS and I’m sure the WiiU will be the same or better. Also, if you’re complaining about too many “kiddie” games, all the companies are trying to branch out to those audiances (kinect and PS move). Nintendo showed of a ton of hardcore games like Pikmin 3, Luigi’s Mansion, Paper Mario (it counts for me as hardcore :D) and a crap ton kf other stuff from third parties.

      4. Details concerning friend codes still unknown, so not sure why it’s disappointing yet. It says that they’d rather focus on refining instead of more content, which is a good thing. No mention means it’s not ready, and I’d rather have a good, not rushed game.
Not even going to dignify the hardcore/casual part of your argument, since you don’t know what they actually mean.

        1. Eh, actually…with the patching system that games have nowadays, they could easily focus their attention on the important part of the game (More characters, music, more content overall, beautiful story cutscenes and stages) and then start patching characters as OP combinations and moves start to get a little overused.

      5. Friend Codes are optional, he clearly said that there won’t be as many new characters as Brawl instead of there being no new characters at all, We just got a Zelda last year so why did you expect one at launch?, and I guess you’re not happy that Nintendo is finally getting 3rd party support and multi-plats.

There you guy, I either debunked or justified everything you said.

    2. Why is this disappointing? As a Nintendo fan you should be proud of them for listening to their fans about the character balance and encourage them to keep doing so. Not give them negative feedback for doing what they are supposed to do. Plus, they never said that they will not be any new characters there just won’t be as much as brawl

  3. Nowhere in that selection or interview does Sakurai say or even imply that there will not be more characters, or new characters.

    Learn2journalism sickr

  4. Get rid of the pointless characters from Brawl (e.g Toon Link, PKMN Trainer, R.O.B), replace them with new characters. Problem solved.

    And bring back Mewtwo. >:\

    1. Pokémon Trainer will be gone as he’ll be replaced with a different version with new Pokémon, probably the starter ones from Black and White.

Toon Link will be merged with normal Link as he will take his Skyward Sword design. Personally I’d like Toon to stay as he’s a lot more nimble than his adult version, more like the Link from the original Smash.

      R.O.B. is going nowhere.

      1. Adult Link is the manifestation of the presence of the Zelda franchise within Smash Bros games, though. Having him flat out replaced by Toon Link would be a travesty. But eh, your opinion.

And I dunno about R.O.B. Obscure peripherals from the 80s don’t exactly have the strongest staying power. He seemed more like an easter egg character to me.

    2. PKMN Trainer is the character close to pointless on your list. Toon Link is used for his agility but could leave. And R.O.B is a boss character, don’t exactly see what is pointless about him but he’s not going anywhere.

      1. Well, I’m saying he’s most likely to get the axe than anyone else. Who do you think Sakurai will leave out if need be- a character from a beloved franchise or a character based on an add-on for the NES?

Not hating on ROB, but I’m merely saying that given his circumstances, they’ll be probably looking to him if they’re going to be making any cuts. Your obvious favouritism with him is irrelevant.

        1. The first to go is likely to be Snake or Sonic, as they were Third Party GUEST characters.

R.O.B. is a similar case to G&W. When Brawl was announced, it was thought that he would be cut cause he was too obscure, but we all know how that turned out.

    3. no. there are no pointless characters. i have trained with every single character and noticed there are very distinct differences with even the “clones” like Toon Link. they need to keep every character in the smash bros series (especially Mewtwo) so no one is disappointed that their favorite character got removed.

      R.I.P. (Return If Possible) Roy

  5. As long as more characters are released as DLC for free after the game comes out, I won’t mind too much. But you do need to put Megaman and Pacman into the game when it launches. It is such a shame that Sakurai is being rushed for this game…

      1. Why not? He is one of the most recognisable video game characters, Namco Bandai are helping develop the game, and I think Pacman would fit perfectly into the feel of the game. If Snake was allowed in, whay not Pacman?

        1. Just because he’s one of the most recognisable doesn’t make his implementation a good idea. Do you think Q*bert would make a good addition?

Snake is worlds apart to Pacman. He has substance and comes from a franchise that’s still relevant today. As much as we all love Pacman, it’s dead. Resurrecting a character who hasn’t had a decent video game since the last century not only stretches the notion of third party rostering but also shows some levels of desperation. The idea of Pacman being in Smash Bros is pretty much the cutting image of those annoying fan-made rosters you see posted up on the internet everywhere.

Plus, Pacman (despite his numerous console outings which were basically all garbage) is an arcade man. I think it’s better Sakurai keeps the roster limited to characters who have made names for themselves on home consoles.

            1. Oh okay, let’s put him in because of Pacman World 2 then. If ever that game were to have a greater purpose, I knew it’d be to serve as a credential for Pacman warranting him entry into a Smash Bros game.

              Yeah.

          1. “Resurrecting a character who hasn’t had a decent video game since the last century…”

Pit, Ice Climbers, and Mr. Game and Watch fit this category and became great smash bros characters.

But Pac-Man, what is he going to do? Turn people blue and eat them?

            1. The difference with those characters are:

              1.) They’re first party
              2.) They had *no* games.

Pacman has had dozens of games churned out with his face on the cover over the years. It’s alright if they’re coming from a franchise that could still be considered an untapped resource, unlike Pacman.

          2. So the countless versions of Pacman/Ms. Pacman on consoles do not count? And if your logic stands, Donkey Kong and Mario shouldn’t be in Smash because they originated from the arcades.

Have you even played Pacman Championship Edition XD? That is a fantasic game. Pacman wasn’t as good as he was 20 years ago, but he is still recognisable. Pacman was even in the Mario Kart arcade games, so he is no stranger to modern day Nintendo. I am certain Pacman will be in Smash 4, if you like it or not.

  6. Aslong as there is atleast 3-4 new ones that would be something but if no new characters…yeah even if the game would own that would be the weakest point…

  7. just don’t fuck up my jiggly puff, and make the fights faster, bralw sucked ass (yes I prefer melee over bralw)

      1. I want to, but since my sdtv broke I haven’t used my wii, and I just wont play it on my hdtv. Streched screen thats why, I’ve nothing but greathings about Project M though.

  8. C’mon, you can at least give us another 5 and that’s it. Ridley and Little Mac deserve to be in the game! (And to a lesser extent, Shulk from Xenoblade)

    1. no to ridley it would be meta knight all over again even worse bigger then bowser but much faster and only a tad bit weaker it would be the most unbalanced charector in ssb’s history

      1. yeah, Ridley made a good boss, but could never make a good character. and that MetaKnight reference better be positive

    2. >Ridley

Hahaha, oh boy. That’s rich. While we’re at it, let’s add Rayquaza, Valoo and that giant robotic albatross from that Sonic game I played that one time.

      1. *facepalm* Bowser had been big as hell in many Mario games and yet he was resized in the Smash games. Ridley is too damn important to not be playable and would be more unique than the likes of Dark Samus or Sylux. He can be resized since he was actually small in the first Metroid. Now Andross on the other hand, would be stupid. -_-

        1. ^This
I am personally all for Ridley in Smash 4, just resize him to the size of Bowser and give him a moveset similar to Firebrand’s in UMvC3 and he’ll be fine.

    3. The Talking Cartridge

“..matter of ‘if’ the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.”

It will probably have 50 characters.

  9. If its DLC that will defeat the purpose of refinment as it will hurt the online play. If its Disk lock content than thats just contridicting. Why couldnt you just fix patches via down..oh uts not a ps3 nevermind ill get allstar rather than play ssb reboot

    1. Yeah the Wii U can’t have patches to fix games as we’ve all discovered while playing out Wii U’s, haven’t we? Moron. No-one has said patches won’t be possible so care to share how you know it won’t? Or are you just talking nonsense. No need to answer, as it’s apparent which is true.

  10. Guys there’s probably going to be new characters, just not as many as you expect. And plus refining the old characters is going to be like playing a new one. Let me explain; let’s say they refine fox, falco and wolf. As you know they play the same way (esp the final smash). If they were refined and given their own set of unique moves, then it’s going to be like playing a new character. Same goes with any other copy characters; capt falcon, ganondorf

    1. i know everyone compares falco to fox but for me its like playing totally different characters i own as falco but suck as fox.

    2. Apart from similar specials, Wolf plays nothing like Fox/Falco. Same goes for Ganondorf- apart from specials (which still aren’t totally the same), just about every move Ganondorf can use is way different to Falcon’s. The physics and feel of his character is also worlds apart- the polar opposite, actually.

The closest thing to a clone character would probably be Toon Link, and even then he still controls a lot differently.

      1. Ganondorf’s movesets are cloned from captain falcon, and made slower and stronger.
They have the same moves, it is a clone, and everyone knows it.
I would much rather see clone characters use their own movesets built from the ground up, and i’m sure the only people that would cry about the change are competitive players.

        1. Ganondorf’s forward tilt, down tilt, up tilt, jab, forward air, side special, and up smash are nothing like Captain Falcon’s. Add to that you have to play Ganondorf in a completely different playstyle than to Captain Falcon if you want to get anywhere with him. They’re not just simply ‘slower and stronger’.

They do not have the same moves. Some are similar in certain respects but by no means the same. I assume we’re talking about brawl.

            1. I play regularly over wifi with friends, I’ve never been to a competition. But yeah, I play at a pretty competitive level. Does that really have anything to do with it? Ganondorf and Falcon play very differently in brawl and it’s more than just speed and power that dictates that.

    3. how dare you say the star fox characters play the same way! just about every one of their moves is significantly different from its “clone”

  11. Doesn’t brawl have like 35 characters he’s clearly saying like 50 is enough that still means maybe 15 more characters -.- how is that no new characters

    1. I would like what he’s having, oh whats that!?…Yes the Ghirahim aswell. “Alright your order will be out in a few years “

  12. If this is the actual case, then this is EXTREMELY disappointing.

I love Smash Bros, but it’s incredibly obvious that the success of the series comes from the characters. It’s a very solid game, but it wouldn’t be anywhere as popular as it is if it weren’t for the characters..
Besides, that’s what everybody looks forward to the most. I really hope this isn’t the case.

    1. you dont the F*** know what everyone wants. Keep your opinion to yourself. I trust Sakurai and expect a great game like always.

      1. I frequent the Smash Bros scene quite often. I play both Melee and Brawl competitively. I am often in forums. I experience what the fan’s want quite often.
Look up “Smash Bros 4” on Google, and the majority of the articles that come up will be guesses at the next additions to the roster.

So yes. People do want more characters.

Also, I just have to point out the irony of you telling me to keep my opinion to myself on a comments section, where the purpose is to express opinions. Furthermore, I never said it’d be a bad game.

        1. I think he got angry because you didn’t actually read the article, just the headline. In no way does it say there will be no new characters in Smash 4.

In fact I expect there to be quite a few as remember its on two systems. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Ghirahim on the Wii U and someone from Advance Wars in the 3DS one. They should try to have series that are mainly on a handheld (Advance Wars, Wario, Pokémon, etc) represented more on the portable version while games like Star Fox, Metroid, Pikmin, etc are more on the Wii U.

          1. First off, thank you for actually replying in a respectable manner..

Secondly, I did actually read it. The quote “In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.” is evident though.

While it doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be more characters (sketchy phrasing, translation problems, whatever the reason), it doesn’t exactly bode well. If the limit was 50, that’d be great, but it’s doesn’t sound good.

Either way, we’ll have to wait for the game to take more traction, and until we see more confirmation of “no new characters”, we can only hope.

            1. Personally I think he just means that they won’t be adding people just for the hell of it (like Falco), they’ll only be in if they can make them unique and stop having clone characters.

I’d be happy with no new ones if we get to use our Mii though. Imagine being able to choose your Mii’s moves. There could be hundreds of new ones like smacking someone with the Balance Board and you could customise it yourself by picking four moves to have. You could even have other characters moves like Falcon Punch, Luigi Cyclone, Pikachu’s Light Dash and Link’s boomerang. You could even win costumes of all the playable characters and ones not in the game to wear (keeping fans happy when their favourite game isn’t included), the 3DS could have costumes/moves the Wii U one doesn’t have, making you have to share/swap with people. Maybe even have loads of different voices to make your Mii even more unique. Having your own personal fighter that you make would, I think, be exceptionally cool, give you an avatar for online and could always be expanded on with DLC. Dress your Mii up as a Magikarp or NSAF? Yes please.

              1. I know people who take Smash seriously will say that could become very unbalanced but you could give each move a number of how powerful it is and have a limit. Says hat way you couldn’t have all powerful moves as you couldn’t fit them in.

                1. Legend!! I agree with you. Most people understand that Super Smash Bros. is really about what characters are added in. I spend the years it takes for the new Super Smash Games to come out guessing on what characters will be added and looking up leaked info on possible newcomers. I.Am.Obsessed. with the characters and nothing more. If he doesnt add newcomers than I can asure you I will personally be Extremely disappointed and Im sure I’m not the only one.

  13. Pingback: Game Clock » Blog Archive » Wii U Smash Bros. Probably Won’t Have More Characters

  14. Quality over quantity is what this company is all about. To me, having 50 characters in Super Smash Bros. U is good enough for me. We can’t always get what we want… just have to live with it. And when time comes and Project Sora and/or Namco-Bandai announce an expansion DLC with new characters, I’m positive that the anticipation pays off at the end. For those of you here saying it’s “EXTREMELY disappointing”… RELAX!!!!!! It’s just a video game. Just wait until the game is released.

    1. While I agree with the sentiment that you should wait and see, it’s totally understandable that people get dissapointed.

Smash Bros is a series for people to see their favorite characters playable in a new light. People were already dissapointed with the Roster in Brawl, so if they choose to not add anymore characters, in a game that’s about the characters.. well.. it makes sense to be let down.

If they do end up having DLC characters, then I am more than okay with all of this, but so far there’s been no mention of that.

    2. “50 is good enough for me”

Heh, if anything, that’s borderline too many. I’d be happy with that amount too but anything more is just excessive.

      1. Well to you it might be. I crave like 100 characters, so 50 Is borderline way to little for me!!! I NEED MORE! more is better, always has been always WILL!!

  15. I’m not completely happy with this, but I can understand why they’re doing it. I’d really rather have more playable characters than pointless new characters. They could also replace some of the current, or even bring back some of the old.

  16. thats fine with me. Anyway i use 4-5 characters all the time and dont really care about some others. nobody will ever play all characters. id prefer mastering link’s moveset instead of learning an new character :)

  17. So Nintendo to many characters create issues and nobody wants to fight with to many characters…looks at POKEMON lol the irony

    1. Take a look at Mario lol, the irony is better suited there! Anyway, it isnt Mario games and Pokemon games’ faults that their titles have soooo many more characetrs that are popular. Look at Metroid…there is Samus -.-….. and possibly Ridley if we Smash Bros. fans get lucky ;) but that is because it is all the game has to offer. Well with Pokemon and Mario series there are thousands of popular characters to chose from!!!

  18. He isn’t saying there wont be new characters, he’s saying the number of characters wont change. Just like with Melee to Brawl some charcters will be taken out (clones like Wolf) and replaced with new ones.

  19. 50 characters would be amazing that means we get 15 new ones and maybe even replacements for existing characters (like snake or sonic), this is awesome.

    1. Wy would they replace Snake and Sonic?? They are obviously going to leave them because they help sell the game to Sega/Sonic fans and Snake/Konami fans! It expands the game into new horizons. I wasnt happy with the thought of 3rd party characters either, but somehow these two fit in nicely. I dont think 3rd party characters that some people mention should ever make it in…such as Naruto, Transformers, Resident Evil and crap like that. Why even suggest that? There is no hope at all for any of those “type” of characters, Heck! Naruto and Transformers are from T.V shows! People need to understand it is limited mostly to Nintendo characters, than children friendly games with children friendly looks and designs. The one exception is Snake and that was because the guy from Konami pleaded with Nintendo to put him in. That wont happen ever again I think, nor would(for example)Capcom start to beg with nintendo about getting Leon S. Kennedy in Super Smash Universe lol!!!

      1. Actually, Chris Redfield is what you would call a perfect character for SSB, he’s the average American hero. But i understand what you say, those idiots “OMG PUT SORA FROM KH IN, PUT THAT BITCH FROM A NAMCO GAME NO ONE CARES ABOUT INSTEAD OF PAC-MAN”

  20. That’s a very good idea. Improve the quality. He also didn’t rule out adding new characters, he just said it’s the main thing he’s focusing on. Leave luck to heaven.

  21. The same amount of characters is fine if they just got rid of clones (Fox/Falco/Wolf, Ness/Lucas, etc). The move sets are basically the same for the clones, so it would be worthwhile to pick only one of each to allow more room for new players. Ghirahim would be awesome.

    1. Actually I felt that Ness and Lucas were diferent enough. The Fox, Falco and Wolf triplets really pissed me off though. It’s one thing to have a set of clones but THREE!!!!!! Now thats just unnacceptable. The biggest one of all to remove is Ganondorf and Cptn. Falcon. Ganondorf could have a MUCH better moveset than what he does now. They should make him faster(not too fast :P) and give him his damn sword! No more warlock punch crap, make it Warlock Sword Smash instead ;) P.S. Ghirahim WOULD be awesome :)

  22. Man do I love all you Crybabies in here Wahhhh Wahhhh!!! We want more New Characters Wahhhh!!! This is exactly why I changed my name. Shall I change you guys diapers

    1. lol everytime I hear the name Shulk I think of She-Hulk and think, “Thats not gunna happen lol!!!) But then I look up Shulk and remember he is the main character of Xenoblade and that I need to go buy that game and play it cuz it looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. I wouldnt mind Shulk in Super Smash Bros. Universe :D

  23. On a more srs note it would be cool if they have stages from pacman, klonoa or even fatal frame and u can use your wii upad camera to unlock ghost, items or hidden easter eggs

  24. @NintendoCrybaby Please Change mines Dad its been long overdue and after these past years I suffered major diarrhea. Tnx :’)

  25. Well, they could still add just a couple new ones, doesn’t need to be a whole bunch! I’d like to see someone from Kingdom Hearts or The World Ends With You, that’d be fun!

    1. Doubt it from both of those games. Ive never heard of “World Ends With You” and Kingdom Hearts is full of Disney characters. I dont see Disney getting involved in Super Smash ever. Maybe Final Fantasy though and I know some FF characters are in KH so that main character “Cloud” I think his name is could be added as a character. He seems pretty popular.

      1. well, i mean the original ones for kingdom hearts, but i wouldn’t mind mickey at all! how good it would be to get mickey, mario and sonic in the same fight?

  26. I would rather they work on other features then a huge character line up where I would probably not even use most of them. What would be better then hordes of random characters is character creator. I would love to see stage builder done up a lot better as well.

I think people panicking that they might not add new characters are being a little over reactive. For starters it doesn’t say no new characters within that paragraph. What it says is the number in Brawl is just about right. What it does mean is most likely certain characters and in particular the 3rd party ones will be swapped out for others. It has happened within the series before. If anything should be more worried about who they will remove and replace with newer characters.

    1. OMG! your right…about having to be worried about removing Characters!!!! I’m scared, they might remove someone important that I love(namely Jigglypuff because everyone hates her, but I love her and think she is great!) I dont like when they remove characters from the game. They should keep them all and only add more. Thats my philosophy. If it takes him a year longer to do what all the fans want than so be it, I dont care just give me more characters and dont remove any either!!!

    2. Besides, we already have something in the vein of Brawl with more balanced and refined versions of the existing characters: it’s called Project M.

I get what Sakurai’s point is but I don’t he’s stupid enough to essentially go to the lengths of making two games for both WiiU and 3DS and get Namco on board to help him just for it to be “Brawl 2.0 now in HD” especially in this day and age where the industry is full of cynical gamers who would rather download a free fan-mod over paying $50-$60 for one. It would commercially bankrupt Nintendo.

That said, I think he just needs to drop Falco, Toon Link, Jigglypuff and Lucario and replace them w/ Ridley, Little Mac, Shulk, Issac and possibly Dillon from Dillon’s Rolling Western. (What? He could work!)

      1. As a StarFox fan I think Falco should stay but be given a more unique move set. They sort of tried with Brawl but they really need to go over the top with it. Would be nice if they added in Krystal from StarFox and in particular her Adventures form with staff. That way she will have a more unique moveset. There is also a severe lack of female playable characters in Smash Bros. Kinda sidetracking though. XD

    3. NO ONE should be removed, removing characters is a complete NO. The Roster should go up to 50 characters, more if Sakurai decides to not be a wimp anymore and stop pleasing competitive faggots with his “balance”.

      1. Characters have already been removed and replaced. Third party characters I always viewed them as a 1 off. Nintendo don’t own those characters so it was very unlikely they would appear in future Bros game from the start. I can see a good few Nintendo ones being replaced by newer version of themselves (some already have) or newest characters from respective series (again some already have).

Balance is VERY important to all games. It may seem silly to you but keep in mind that slight imbalance could really effect your enjoyment of the game. Difficulty is always a huge topic for gaming and doesn’t just effect multiplayer. You look at the arcade mode in Bros series. Now imagine couple of characters that are super powerful and that all the other characters are weak. Those two super powerful characters you have to face in first battle of arcade mode and those characters can’t be unlocked until you beat arcade mode. Your forced to do this with characters that just can’t win in that situation.

    1. How about no clones, no space pirate because they are too minor characters, and Goron and Zora can be masks for Young Link if he were to be added??? Instead add Krystal from Star Fox, a Diddy Kong and Dixie combo, Mewtwo, Zoroark, Prince Fluff, Mii’s, Birdo, Daisy, Ridley, Pichu and Roy should make a return with new moveset, and Doctor Mario should be a costume change for Mario, also things like Dry Bowser as a costume change for Bowser and Star Fox command uniforms for the Star Fox characters should be added. I could really care less about 3rd party characters. Though having Banjo Kazooie or Megaman join in would be pretty awesome I’m not gunna lie! :P

  27. Please add(HADES(kid icraus)demise(as a replacement for ganondorf) skull kid viridi(kid icarus) lady palutena, waluigi,Ghirahim, bowser jr, Majora’s mask link(uses mask), mega man, ryu(street fighter) please get ride of clones like ganondorf(captain falcon) toon link falco, wolf because they just take up space and please keep snake, wario, king dedede, meta knight and mr. game an watch. also do another story mode but give us adventure mode still and keep stage creator just give us more stuff

    1. doubt he’d add Hades, Demise, Viridi, Palutena and Ryu…firstly Ghirahim is a more likely choice seeing as he was a more recuring character in Skyward sword. Secondly no one is replacing Ganondorf!! How can people say that, Ganondorf is Link’s main villain. It wont happen. Also no Gods can join the fray, its like adding Master Hand it would be too weird to scale down their power. I agree with everything else you said though :P Oh, but you forgot Krystal from Star Fox she is my most wanted character for SSB WiiU!!!

  28. Long as theres about 5-6 new ones im fine. Just a bunch of new creative stages. And technically, if they sort of existing characters, like clones, theyd feel new anyway

  29. Pingback: Super Smash Bros. para Wii U/3DS probablemente no tenga nuevos personajes

  30. In my opinion what is making this quote ambiguous is that we don’t know if he is talking about Brawl’s characters or the one they have already selected for the WiiU.

As some people already said….he have to wait and see.

    1. Yeah, me too! Especially since all existing characters will get an updated design AND we will hopefully get a load of new characters too. :)

  31. Oh, nice, now that Nintendo’s going DLC, people are getting cocky thinking that the characters they want, even if completely unrelated to Nintendo, will appear in the game later on. Snake and Sonic are exceptions because they are closely related to Nintendo, with Snake having appeared in that Twin Snakes game (I am not counting that Metal Gear NES atrocity as a true Metal Gear game, and neither should any proper Metal Gear fan), and Sonic having been close with Nintendo for the longest time in recent years. But all those other characters you guys have been suggesting that are unrelated to Nintendo just…isn’t…going…to…happen. Get. Over. It.

    1. As much fun as it would be to be playing characters from all over the gaming world in ssbu, I’d rather not add overpower freaks. It’s common knowledge that sonic would win in a fight against mario outside the ssb universe and they had to somehow dumb him down to everyone’s lvl of fighting. But dumbing down some punks with freakishly unnecessarily large broadswords or whatever god killing freak out there, that just might be too unreallistic.

  32. DAMNIIIT!!!!…See I am the type of Smash Bros. Fan who obsesses over the new characters and stuff. Nothing anyone can say will sway me to think diferently. I want new characters and lands and items and I want as many as they can put in! Thats just what I want I’m sorry that most Smash Bros. fans want that. It’s just the way it is. I wish Sakurai would do what the fans really want instead of what “He thinks” is best. I could really care less about the graphics. Just as long as I can be Mewtwo paired with Banjo Kazooie fighting against Paper Mario and Krystal from Star Fox on the new Mario Galaxy Stage lol!!!

  33. That’s a load of crap, game was balanced for multiplayer and if they cared about 1v1 Metaknight would have been nowhere near as strong as he was.

They just want to do a new design and they are choosing THE WRONG FRANCHISE WITH WHICH TO DO THAT WITH

  34. Tom "SnipingIsFun"

    New characters for SSB4:

    -Shulk
    -Ghirahim
    -Krystal
    -Micaiah
    -Andy
    -Isa
    -Matthew
    -Little Mac
    -Bowser Jr
    -Zoroark
    -2nd Gen Pokemon Trainer
    -Ridley
    -Mega-Man
    -Travis Touchdown
    -Trevor Belmont
    -Mii

    1. Definite yes to Micaiah and Matthew. Love those characters.

I’m a little surprised someone actually likes Bowser Jr. enough to suggest him. Most on the internet seem to hate him. I don’t have a problem with him though.

      1. Tom "SnipingIsFun"

Bowser Jr at this point makes the most sense as a new Mario character. He was all over the Wii and DS Mario games, and those systems are where the roster will be based off of for SSB4.

    2. Yes! Someone else thinks a Belmont should appear :D he’d be awesome
I like your list, the characters all seem popular enough but also plausable

  35. I honestly don’t mind as long as there is a few secret characters to unlock. Also, they need to give the clone characters new movesets, or if not, just make them available as alternate skins for the original character… Other things they should focus on would be: tweaking the characters (probably is going to happen as Sakurai said something to this effect), a better adventure mode (Subspace Emissary was kind of underwhelming aside from the splendid cutscenes), and a new Kid Icarus stage base on Uprising, complete with cheesy dialogue with Pit and the gods.

  36. Tom "SnipingIsFun"

The roster is usually based off of the previous system and handheld, so expect the new characters (besides Retro) to comes from Wii and DS. And depending on how far into the new systems Smash comes out, those might get some representation too.

Reasons why I say these new characters for SSB4:

    – Shulk (Main character from new Nintendo IP, Xenoblade is considered the best RPG this gen, Xenoblade is doing great and people love it)
-Ghirahim (Biggest villain in the newest Zelda for most of the game, new interesting moveset, another Zelda villain)
-Krystal (Another female rep, original moveset for Star Fox character, pretty big role in Command)
-Micaiah (One of the main lords in Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, new moveset type in light mage, female character, NOT a sword user, DOES NOT have blue hair)
-Andy (Advance Wars has become a well known franchise, he has been in 3 of them, original moveset with wrenches)
-Isa (In the first localized Sin & Punishment, represents the new Wii game, interesting sword/gun moveset)
-Matthew (Golden Sun has become another well known franchise, Matthew is from the new game on DS, original sword/magic moveset)
-Little Mac (Retro Nintendo character, franchise returned on Wii, and original boxing moveset)
-Bowser Jr (Another Mario villain, represented the most in Wii and DS Mario games, interesting twist on a moveset)
-Zoroark (Most popular 5th gen Pokemon, had a movie, interesting moveset)
-2nd Gen Pokemon Trainer (Heart Gold and Soul Silver on DS for remakes, replaces Gen 1 Trainer, main character of those games)
-Ridley (In almost every Metroid game, a major character in both Prime 3 and Other M, can be small sized, interesting moveset)
-Mega-Man (Major 3rd party with Nintendo, has history with Nintendo, a ton of DS games, Mega-Man 9 and 10 on VC, interesting moveset)
-Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes has become a cult classic this gen, Travis would have an interesting moveset, it is mainly with Nintendo, major 3rd party rep for Wii)
-Trevor Belmont (represents the new 3DS Castlevania, Castlevania has history with Nintendo, whip moveset)
-Mii (major introduction to Nintendo systems on Wii and DS, stayed on the 3DS and will stay on Wii U, represents the Wii system as a whole, interesting moveset)

    1. Most of your list seems plausible to a degree, but I don’t understand why people keep insisting Ridley be a playable character… even if you did downsize him, that would take away hugely from his character and watching him stand only a couple of feet higher than Ness pumping out melee style combat would just look weird.

  37. Pingback: Zelda Sanctuary » Super Smash Bros 4 May Not Include New Characters - Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Zelda Wii, Zelda 3DS, Walkthroughs, Guides, and News!

  38. I still hold out hope in regards to the likes of Rayman, Mega Man and Paper Mario, along with DLC after the game’s release with new unlockable characters (Paper Mario would fit better into a DLC sort of thing anyway).

  39. Don’t come with that bullshit now after so many years of wait. What people care about the most is the new characters. Then, ADD THE CHARACTERS WE WANT, and stop that nonsense. Don’t be stupid.

  40. Why don’t they do that pokémon can evolve at a certain point in the battl.
Like Pichu into Pikachu and maybe Raichu. Jigglypuff’s evolutions (forgot names). Riolu into Lucario, Zorua into Zoroark, Pokémon trainer having Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle evolving, heck maybe even Eevee-lutions

  41. He said 50 will be enough, so mabey there will be 50 charactors.
    New Comers? what I want:
    -Paper Mario
    -King K. Rool
    -Krystal
    -Rosalina

    1. Yay, finally someone else who loves Rosalina, everyone hates on her, she should´ve been in Mario Tennis Open and have a main important role in the Mario games IMO.

  42. I would like to increase the character roster by adding 4 or 5 more characters. But refining the ones we already have sounds like a good idea, more important than adding more characters. For one thing Wolf and Falco should get their own final smash attacks that fit their personalities better instead of being Fox clones and using land masters. Falco prefers to be a pilot and Wolf doesn’t have a land master. So yeah refine the characters before adding any new ones. And of course let’s see new stages with Retro ones.

  43. morons will just complain if there’s no new characters. plus a lot of people buy these kind of games for the characters so that’s kind of not a good idea.

  44. I think there are definitely some characters that could go. I know we like having some of them, but that doesn’t mean they arent crappy fighters. And some of them are way too close to other characters like he said. By fine tuning things and only adding a few new characters it’ll only make it a better game.

  45. The One Who Wrote This

Eh, I think they’ll add a lot of characters anyways. Let them take their time making the game. I want quality over quantity for games. However, have the roster be more than Brawl’s roster.

If you need to do DLC for characters, do so. I don’t mind. Just release them at reasonable prices (or free) and do not do “on disc DLC” like Crapcom, OK? Also, keep Marth in there (and don’t nerf him). Lastly, get rid of tripping, OK?

1st Party Characters I would like added in the next game:

    1. The Black Knight from Fire Emblem PoR&RD: We need more villains. He played a big part in Ike’s story (you know, killing Ike’s father and the like).

    2. Shulk from Xenoblade: Eh, his game did wonderful, so why not add him? Plus, he could incorporate the Monado’s future sight capabilities into his move-set.

    3. Sylux from Metroid Prime Hunters: We seriously need at least 1 more Metroid character. If Ridley doesn’t work, try Sylux?

    4. Ghirahim from LoZ:SS: We need a lunatic in the game, so why not have him? He’ll probably not make it as I cannot think of a good move-set for him.

    5. Who else?: I know more than those 4 are needed for 1st party characters, but who else?

    3rd party Characters from Namco:

    1. Siegfried/Nightmare from Soul Calibur/Edge series: Personally, he’d fit as a heavy character in the game. Siegfried and Nightmare could be the same character on the character select screen, but have different characteristic depending on the costume chosen (like how Wario has his normal “plumber” outfit and his biker outfit) (characteristics being taunts and voice files used, as well as some aesthetics).

    2. Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia 1&2: Since Namco is helping with the development of the game, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in it. Lloyd loves to attack in combos (as do many swordsmen in the Tales of series), which could have the game become faster paced once again (for those who whine about Brawl being too slow).

I can’t really see Pacman in the game. He is a great character and all (like in Pacman World 2), but I think of a good move-set for him.

There’ll probably be other characters as well from Namco, but those are the 2 that I really want over the others. Doesn’t Bandai make or help make the DBZ fighting games? ;)

3rd Party Characters from Other Companies:

    1. Megaman from the Megaman Series: He really needs a special treatment after having 2 of his games being canceled. Plus, he would fit. Any incarnation would do, but I think either his Classic, X, or Battle Network version would work the best (not saying that Legends or Starforce versions would not work).

    2. Zero from the Megaman Series: Yes, I know. 2 Megaman characters. You can have a choice of one over the other if you desperately want. But Zero would also fit. Also, you could have is MMX and MMZ forms as separate costume selections like Wario has for his different sets.

Who else would you like to add?

      1. The One Who Wrote This

Same here! But I think some might say that they are overpowered. Eh, they could follow rules that have them limit their power level until they get a Final Smash Ball.

    1. The One Who Wrote This

Oh yeah. A member of the Belmont family or someone famous from Castlevania would be a good addition as well.

  46. Grrrr nintendo! Quite being lazy. Add at least 50 characters. 50 characters is perfect. Everybody could use their favorite nintendo characters don’t give the lame excuse that you can’t make it balanced. Its possible. Do your job and make the next smash bros awesome!

    1. The One Who Wrote This

I don’t think that they can ADD 50 characters, but I think that they can HAVE 50+ characters.

    2. You totally missed the point of what Sakurai said right?
If the game has 50 characters, many of them will be bound to feel like fillers. I say 40 characters would be a good number. If he gets rid of a few and add another few (for example, Shulk), and mostly focus on the gameplay itself and mostly AN ACTUAL STORY PLEASE GODDAMMIT, it’s all good. The reason why I didn’t want another Smash Bros after Brawl is because I considered to roster to be fine and that all the relevant characters seemed to be in it.
So I hope that’ll make people shut up as well as stopping those terrible fan rosters I see.

  47. I actually agree with Sakurai. I want the next Smash Bros. to be the best game of its kind, not just Brawl in HD with a few extra characters slapped on. Besides, I’m sure there will be a few new hidden characters throw in.

  48. Well lets put it this way. Snake’s gonna be in All Stars. Ike’s getting replaced. I have a feeling that Wolf’s out. Lucario’s out, gonna get replaced by a new gen pokemon. That’s 4 characters that are out. 3 that are guaranteed to be out. That, and DLC. It kind of sucks that there wont be new characters, but I get the feeling that Sakurai’s talking out of his ass right now. Remember the Dojo? How new characters were announced? That was the biggest hype train Nintendo’s ever done, and was a HUGE, HUGE selling point for Brawl. New Characters were what everyone looked forward to. Basically, in a nutshell… There’s gonna be new characters.

  49. I think people misunderstood the 50 characters quote. It’s a quote within a quote so he’s not exactly using it as his own words. He’s most likely using it as an example to describe the balancing issues that come with having a large amount of characters. The issue that he doesn’t want to deal with. I’m sure there will be new characters, and probably more than what was in Brawl, but it sounds as if some of those characters will be replaced.

    1. The One Who Wrote This

As long as the original 12, Bowser, and Marth do not get replaced, I’ll be MOSTLY OK.

      1. The original 12 are 100% safe, Bowser is way too important as he’s one of the few playable villains and Marth is extremely relevant as a Fire Emblem character, he represents the old school FE games. Ike on the other hand might be replaced with Krom :(

  50. finally sakurai is starting to get it….

the brawl cast was horribly imbalanced, its time he focused more on, much like he said, quality over quantity.

Fix the character imbalance issues from brawl, nerf the cast who were retardedly op’d like the ice climbers metaknight, diddy kong and falco to name a few, buff the characters who were underpowered like ike link ganon, zelda, jiggly mario c.falcon samus, etc. (yes i said ike, noobs need to quit thinking he’s op’d, he’s not, he’s actually the opposite, quit running into the most pitifully slow smashes in the game, half of ike’s moves are so retardedly slow that your granny has a reaction time fast enough to avoid em, quick draw, forward smash, up smash, forward tilt, a lot of his mvoes are so slow that and easy to punish its not even funny. If you’d quit walking into his slow moves like idiots you’d start to see just how easy they are to punish and how open they leave the ike player to being punished.)

seriously Brawls balance is so out of wack that it damn near makes MvC2’s balance look good.

  51. As long as there’s good Fire Emblem characters and a Golden Sun character, I’ll be happy.

As for 3rd-party characters, I’d like to see Zero in his MMZ form.

    1. To be honest, I’d be fine if they only add: Shulk, Isaac (or Matthew), any female character and perhaps Megaman as the 3rd party addition.
I’d much rather see a better story than lots of new characters.

  52. Francisco Alvarado Vega

So get rid of Sheik and do a Zelda/Impa tag team instead. Also a Ganondorf/Ghirahim tag team and Link/Fi tag team.

    1. Please no. Zelda/Sheik is the only ”tag team” that’s acceptable because they’re actually the same person. The others, however, wouldn’t make sense.
I personally think it would be pretty cool if Zelda would represented by
SS Link (being the most recent)
OoT Zelda (being the only one who can actually shift into Sheik)
WW Ganondorf (being the best incarnation of Ganondorf, seriously his characterization in this game was way better than in TP)

  53. Looking through some comments, I just want to give my two cents. Everybody talks about balance in Smash Bros (Brawl) as if they were at some disadvantage during battles. Yes, moves have different effects, and some of them (mostly based off of actual attacks or actions within games) give one character an edge. Other, like Sheik, land softly and immediately attack, but it seems right, and something Ganondorf couldn’t do. It’s all characterization and I love it- I’m sure with 2 teams making the next game it will become more balanced overall anyway. Yes, Meta-Knight is “top-tier”- does that say anything besides the fact that HE’S A WARRIOR? a small, nimble warrior with lightning speed who can fly? That’s actually who Meta-Knight is.
The balance I think is off doesn’t really affect Brawl- Super Smash attacks. They should never be used for tournaments, true- some have KO potential and still have the chance to build up damage afterwards. Some make you invincible just for dancing, while Giga-Bowser takes damage. I’m sure Nintendo received a helluva lot of feedback already.
For the next game, I wouldn’t mind more forms of attack- Brawl kept everything from Melee but managed some new attacks, such as glide attacks and meteor smash. Even swimming added quite a bit. So yes, I’d like new characters, new level-based pitfalls and actions, and anything else that represents how much has been included in Nintendo games.

  54. All your prediction lists are terrible. Here’s how the roster might go after studying the rosters from the previous three titles:

1st row: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Yoshi, Wario, Mii
2nd row: Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Toon Link, Fox, Falco, Wolf, Captain Falcon, Olimar, new IP
3rd row: Samus, Ridley, Pit, Palutena, Little Mac, Kirby, Metaknight, Dedede, Ness, Lucas
4th row: Pikachu, Red, Jigglypuff, Lucario, Iris & Axew, Marth, Ike, Krom, Takamaru, N-SAF
5th row: Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B. Ice Climbers, Wrestler, Snake, Sonic, Pac-Man, Random
    DLC: Zoroark and Geno

    1. you have sadly forgotten Magnus from Kid Icarus Uprising. he has more potential of being a character than most of your suggestions

        1. so far Ike is the only swordsman in smash bros to be power-focused, while characters like link, marth, etc are more balanced. and Magnus’ sword looks more unique than any sword a smash bros character has used

          1. Regardless, he’s still a sword user, and people will complain for the lack of more fighters who use their fists or other weapons.

            1. likely more people would be happy to see him in smash bros rather than frustrated. but whatever, stick with your opinion if you want to and leave luck to heaven, i guess

          2. ironic and sad part is ikes’ “physical power focused” game is near worthless against any decent opponent.

most of his moves are so slow that he’s nearly always a punching bag for any decent player, all ike players can rely on are his jab, neutral aerial, and forward aerial, those are his safest moves in most sitautions, his forward smash, up smash, quick draw, aether, and up aerial just to name a few, are all so slow that they’re easy to avoid, and they suffer from such lousy ending lag that they leave him wide open to be countered.

I love findng the noobs who think ike is overpowered, because nothing terrifys and confuses them more then finding someone who isn’t a complete idiot and knows how to dodge his moves, suddenly they’re left speechless about why everyone of their smash moves got dodged and then punished.

              1. nope, i wouldn’t use ike if my life depended on me.

I use characters like metaknight, snake, ice climbers, all characters that actually are threats.

much like an ike noob who cna’t understand why people are dodging his pitifully slow moves, most other noobs are left horrified the first time they get caught in the ice climbers deadly chaingrab, which i’m more than happy to abuse the hell out of on em.

                1. I am great with MetaKnight, as well as snake and the ice climbers and many others. but ike is a fun character too, and if used right can be considered a “threat”

                  1. Its very very very very VERY rare to find an ike player who can use him and be a threat to any characters like metaknight, snake, diddy kong, basically all the top tiers and high tiers. Sure against other low and mid tiers ike can be quite dangerous to go against. But for characters like snake or metaknight or ice climbers(definitely ice climbers) ike cant handle these characters at all, and gets beat to a pulp like a punching bag.

                    1. right, but the few that are still exist. im glad u acknowledge that, and i do have to admit i was pretty helpless against the ice climber chain grab. that’s why i decided to learn how it’s done

  55. I certainly hope he’s just trolling. The addition of new characters is what draws people in to this series- it gives them the hope and maybe the chance to play as their favorite character(s) from a series. To take this away would likely just hurt the game.

I’m not against balancing the characters that exist now (for the love of all things good, Meta Knight needs to be nerfed if he’s coming back), but new characters are a must if this game is going to be a must-buy.

  56. If they change characters’ move-sets I would be sooo happy. Samus has so much unused potential- add half the upgrades from Metroid Prime ONE and you’ve got a much cooler Samus. Link + bomb arrows = Yes. Throw in some cooler pocket monsters, please!
Well, I’m buying the next Smash even if they go back to 25 characters…

  57. making a new smash bros game without new characters would be almost pointless, as it is already possible to balance the game with stuff like Brawl+

  59. I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you make this website yourself
or did you hire someone to do it for you? Plz answer back as I’m looking to construct my own blog and would like to know where u got this from. kudos

  60. I am so sick of this “quality over quantity” crap!! Most of the stuff Nintendo pushes out is not better than the competition, there’s just less stuff!!

  62. i dont think they said that there wouldnt be new characters…just that the amount of characters wouldnt change much…which is fine with me….and its true…too many characters is something really hard to balance.

im personally hoping the series takes a new direction..i love smash bros…but i feel like there isnt much more you can do to keep it fresh with the current gameplay…..i would want them to draw some inspiration from the unreleased mugen game CARD WARS SAGA…..and if they happen to go 3d gameplay with it….(seeing as how namco’s fighting game experience is pretty much for 3d fighters; and they are the ones who provided sakurai with a prototype for the new smash bros)….i would want it to move and play a bit like naruto ninja storm….except with smash bros relevant mechanics

  63. Smash 64 had a roster of 12. Melee had a roster of 25, they added 13 characters. In brawl, their was 35 characters, but they took out Mew-two, Roy, and Pichu. So that’s 22 returning characters to brawl, so they added 13 characters yet again, but took out a few. If SmashU also adds 13 new characters, that would make the 35 roster to 48, but they may take out some characters from Brawl or even bring some back from Melee, but that is still underneath the 50 character roster which he mentioned. It’s safe to say that we’ll see some new characters.

  64. In my opinion, there can be no new smash without new characters.
That would be totally disappointing. I think the number of Characters
is ok, but the rooster shlould be edited. This means that some existing,
not that important or superfluous characters like the Pokémon Trainer,
Lucario, Lucas, R.O.B., Snake or Toon Link should be replaced with
some “fresh” characters like King K. Rool, Bomber Man, MegaMan,
(Meta) Ridley, Ryu and Akuma from Street Fighter, Crono and Magus
from Chrono Trigger etc. Would also be nice to see Mewtwo again. <3

  65. I understand Sakurai. but do not put more characters in the next smash bros … In my opinion I think if this happens the fans will be very disappointed and Smash Bros would no longer be the same as before.

  68. I think that one of the more exaiting things about the smash games is to unlock new character and play new gameplays, I will keep my hopes xD.

  70. I’d love to see some characters leave and be replaced with similar characters from the same series. And also some new games represented.

Remove either Wolf or Falco and replace with Star Fox Adventures Krystal

Remove Diddy and add in King K. Rool

Replace Lucario with a new pokemon

Remove Toon Link, or have him be a subset character in Link’s choices like Zero suite Samus

Remove Snake and Sonic, replace with other guest characters: Pac-man (as its Namco), Mega Man, a Battletoad, Bomberman , Earthworm Jim, etc.

    Keep original 12

Remove Lucas, Ness is enough to represent earthbound.

Little Mac and Waluigi as playable characters instead of assist trophies.

Remove Pokemon Trainer – pikachu, jigglypuff, and lucario replacement are more than enough for the franchise.

Birdo and Rosalina as potential characters.

Remove metaknight – only need kirby and King Dedede, but if desparate for a third kirby char – make knuckle joe a full character

If keeping Sonic, add Eggman as an additional Heavy

Replace Olimar with main character from Animal Crossings

Add Miis with the option of choosing another character’s playstyle. As in, you can use your Mii but play like Luigi.

Remove R.O.B. and add in Mallow or Geno from Super Mario RPG

Replace Marth and Ike with Lyndis and Jenna. Need more female representation.

Possibly add Midna as a Zelda character.

    1. Remove either Wolf or Falco and replace with Star Fox Adventures Krystal
      – Falco has been in Smash for 2 games now, I think he is staying. Wolf is questionable. However I see him returning nonetheless. Krystal should be added for more female fighters.

Remove Diddy and add in King K. Rool
      – Why?? If anything just add King K. Rool. I find this to be slim since everyone says that Rare owns him, even though this can’t be true since he has appeared in a few Wii games (Mario Super Sluggers, DK: Barrel Blast, He was a trophy in Brawl).

Replace Lucario with a new pokemon
      – This is possible, I wish it wasn’t and they would stop removing characters…

Remove Toon Link, or have him be a subset character in Link’s choices like Zero suite Samus
      – Sakurai sees 2 Links as important. I think he will return.

Remove Snake and Sonic, replace with other guest characters: Pac-man (as its Namco),
Mega Man, a Battletoad, Bomberman , Earthworm Jim, etc.
      – Possible. Most likely Mega Man.

      Keep original 12
      – Not sure why not… if we are getting technical I can say right now that a bunch of people from Brawl will return.

Remove Lucas, Ness is enough to represent earthbound.
      – Lucas is not going anywhere. I agree that Ness is enough to represent Earthbound, Lucas represents Mother 3, see what I did there?

Little Mac and Waluigi as playable characters instead of assist trophies.
      – Little Mac, yes. Waluigi, I am not sure. He would have a good moveset potential I guess.

Remove Pokemon Trainer – pikachu, jigglypuff, and lucario replacement are more than enough for the franchise.
      – Pokemon is a tricky franchise. We can never be sure what they will do with it. I think Pokemon Trainer will stay, and if he is replaced then he might get new Pokemon.

Birdo and Rosalina as potential characters.
      – I agree with Rosalina.

Remove metaknight – only need kirby and King Dedede, but if desparate for a third kirby char – make knuckle joe a full character
      – Meta Knight isn’t going anywhere. Why remove him if all you are going to do is add Knuckle Joe??? Meta Knight is more of a main character than him… Meta Knight will probably go through some changes though for this new game.

If keeping Sonic, add Eggman as an additional Heavy
-We will be lucky if we get Sonic and Snake back this time around, which I hope we do. But I think we will only have 1 character per third party.

Replace Olimar with main character from Animal Crossings
      – Sakurai said himself that Animal Crossing is too innocent for Smash. Which I find to be a weird reason seeing as how there are characters in Smash that you wouldn’t see fighting like they do. Plus, Pikmin isn’t going anywhere. Olimar may be replaced by a new captain from Pikmin 3 though, we will have to wait and see.

Add Miis with the option of choosing another character’s playstyle. As in, you can use your
      Mii but play like Luigi.
      – I find this to be very possible. However, I think they will either have the Miis copy one of the other character’s movesets (like you said) or you can customize their entire moveset by using moves of other characters, making a complete custom character that you could transfer between your 3DS and Wii U. I think this is the connectivity that they are going to incorporate.

Remove R.O.B. and add in Mallow or Geno from Super Mario RPG
      – I find Geno’s inclusion to be very slim.

Replace Marth and Ike with Lyndis and Jenna. Need more female representation.
      – I agree with more females, but they will not remove Marth and Ike just to do this…

Possibly add Midna as a Zelda character.
      – I think Wolf Link and Midna would be a good character, with Midna riding Wolf Link as a single character.

      1. Hey I believe they will keep sonic considering how popular he was and his history with Nintendo I can’t say the same for Snake but I really believe sonic will stay and I hope he does

  72. THEY MUST ADDD RAYMAN OR ANOTHER CHARECTOR THAT IS EPIC FROM A NEW GAME if you remove a single charector i would be dissapointed and probally not play the game a lot

    1. Little dude… why the fuck are you talking to yourself in a mirror? Is Nintendo a human being? FUCK NO! Since you’ve failed at trolling, you should know that both developers Sora and Namco-Bandai are hard at work at making Super Smash Bros. Universe for the Wii U. As of right now, we don’t know how many characters will be in that game, but they’ll let us know in the next couple of years. For now, be patient.

  73. I think they will add more characters I hope they keep sonic I doubt they will get rid of him but i can’t say the same for snake and add like 2 or 3 3rd party characters they were fun the only 3rd party characters I want are
Sonic (sega or Nintendo idk if they bought him him yet)
    MegaMan (Capcom)
    PacMan (Namco)

I really would love to have MARIO vs. SONIC vs. MEGAMAN vs. PACMAN!! I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THT FIGHT!! :D so ya I don’t think they will add to many more characters but Im pretty sure they will add more :)

  74. The Catalyst of Darkrai

How about having Sawk the pokemon for a new playable character, Arceus or Giratina for a boss, and some suggested pokeball pokemon being Majicarp (replacing goldine), Magnamite, mew (have mew’s voice frum the lucario movie), Celebi (have it say “breeeeeeeeeeeeeee” treecko, azumarill, axew, Rayquaza, Darkrai, Shaymin, Victini, Keldeo, breloom, and Haxorus. what do yous think?
