Sony: ‘Of Course We’ll Watch What Nintendo Is Doing’ With Wii U

According to Sony UK boss Fergal Gara, Sony respects Nintendo as a competitor and will watch what it is doing with Wii U very closely. Gara admits Wii U is an intriguing device but says he doesn’t exactly know how successful the new console will be.

“We respect Nintendo as a highly successful competitor. Of course we will watch what they’re doing with interest. It’s [Wii U is] a very interesting product they’re bringing to market. I don’t have a clear view on how successful it will be. And to a large extent it doesn’t matter what I think. It matters what the great British public think. So we will see.”

    1. Yeah right, then next thing you know you are bitching: ”Sony’s copying Nintendo!!!OMFG!!!”.
Let’s be consequent at least, now.

    2. Yes, they should.

Still funny considering all their ‘Nintendo aren’t competition’ statements from 2004-2008ish.

Although I guess we have to credit them with learning not to be so mind numbingly stupid this time around.

  1. Hope you have a box of Kleenex, Fergie. The Wii U is gonna dominate the United States and Canada first… and then Europe… and then Japan… and finally, the entire world!!!!!!!

    It’s Nintendo… it does everything!

  2. I hope they don’t mean to blatantly copy Nintendo ideas.

I want something different from them. Not a upgraded product of the wii u but something DIFFERENT!!!

    Get N or get OUT!!!

    1. Agreed , If they copy the wiiu I’m not buying it . If they do something Unique I am definately buying the ps4. If they do copy it I’l buy a wiiu and a 720 …

  3. sony’s business strategy “lets improve on what nintendo is already doing, but not use it or advertise it in any way, that’ll make us money” seriously. i have no real problem making clones of nintendo products, because they dont make any money off of it anyway. when they start actually profiting from all of the copying they do, then it’ll bug me.

    1. ironically they say shit that Nintendo is pulling a bad move but then they do it…..what are they trying to do, make fools out of themselves.
they said they in for the “hardcore” but wonderbook speaks differently.

      1. i dont even understand what sony is even doing anymore. you can tell that they are going to die off soon. they’re losing a ton of money, and have been in debt since the ps3 came out. i really cant see any way for them to dig themselves out of the hole they dug themselves in.

        1. i don’t think there the same people who work for Sony 10 years ago, but i hope they don’t die soon, image a lot of people unemployed just because Sony stupid decisions.

          1. i’m not hoping they die, it’s just inevitable. it is sad to think about all of the people that will lose there jobs, but they will mostly likely be able to get an other job somewhere else soon after.

    2. improve hahahahahahahahha lol improve foe the love of fact vs fiction improved hahahha dream on fan boy

no one on this planet has even matched nintendo ever Fact DUALSHOCKS ANALOG STICKS TO THIS DAY ARE 100 % FAIL AND STILL DONT MATCH THE PRECISION OF A N64 STICK LET ALONE A GAMECUBE OR Wii

AND SINCE WEN DID MOVE IMPROVE ON WII REMOTE AND CHUCK KEEP YOUR DERANGED FANTASYS TO ONES SELF PLEASE

      1. wait, you think I’M a sony fanboy? really? im pretty vocal about how i think it’s time for sony to die. and yes, they did improve on what nintendo has done most of the time, the n64 had one analog stick, lets have 2. nintendo made a motion controller that you can point at the screen? lets make on that it can tell where it is and how it’s being held. i am in no way a sony fanboy, but im not going to just blindly bash them for no reason.

  4. if all the Sony fanboys were like this guy and openly admit that they really are in debt with Nintendo then we will only have to worry about the other two blind fanboys out there.

Let’s help the brother to see the light.

    1. The only blind fanboys are Nintendo fanboys you’re like a beast every time when i read some Nintendo fanboy’s comment only says Sony copy from Nintendo Sony copy from Nintendo never have read from some Sony fanboy’s comment Nintendo copy from Sony and they really copy first from PS2 the webcam and now from PS3/PSP PS VITA remote play anyway for me all Nintendo fanboys are fucking BEASTS

      1. Sorry, but your facts are a little off. PS Vita and the Wii U were announced during the same E3, or a few days before for the Vita considering Sony can’t keep a secret. Neither idea is a copy of the other; it is an example of convergent evolution: two completely separate organisms reaching similar solutions for the same problem.

Also, hardly anyone remembers the Webcam. If that is the only example of Nintendo copying Sony you can find, then GTFO.

      2. Have you ever heard of the virtual boy? I might have been a failure, but it came out a while before the eyecam and it was the first real implication of motion controls, now please continue being malinformed. I don’t claim Sony stole from Nintendo at all, motion control really wasn’t a new idea, nintendo just finally figured out a way to make it attractive. Also, I don’t think you should claim that nintendo stole from anyone considering crossplay was really started with the gamboy to gamecube hookup, and now its just been made wireless and more attractive.

  5. LOL, whoever was stupid enough to ask Sony if they were going to “watch Nintendo” should be fired from any media position! That is a completely useless question.

I guarantee that every console manufacturer, and every major game developer and publisher watches every other console manufacturer, and every major game developer and publisher. That is business. Know what the competition is up to – failure to do so will lead to… well, failure.

Now, if the question was “Sony, what particular aspect of the Wii U most intrigues you?” – or something to that effect, that would be a more interesting Q & A. Granted, Sony would probably be quite coy, and not give any real specifics.

    1. “Nintendo is preparing to launch a new console this Christmas. Does that have any bearing on PlayStation? Does that factor into your decision making?”

clearly not as they didn’t lower the price of the new slim

    1. That’s what you think. Of course every major company of the same business watch each other. That’s part of the business.

  6. There’s a different between watching and imitating. Remember when ps1 and ps2 overtook the market? Because they did something different, and better (yes, the ps1 and ps2 were better than the n64 and gamecube).

But you’re looking at the wrong people, they ONE company, that took your customers right under your noses, with a console that was an absolute shambles compared to yours and sold literally because of 1 fucking game. Dont “watch” Nintendo, watch Microsoft, and humilite them

    1. Mainly at the time of the PS1 and PS2 Sony had good relationships with outside developers, leading to a library with quantity and quality. Their fortune with the PS1 was Nintendo’s decision to go with cartridges (possibly the only fault of the N64 system, unless you really don’t like the controller) and SEGA’s migrane-inducing approach to their hardware, because then Sony picked up a lot of developers right off the bat. They were able to use their past system’s legacy* to make the weakest of Gen 6′s big 3 hardware the most successful with, yet again, compelling content. Free online play didn’t hurt, either.

      * This is does not guarantee positive results, as proven by the PS3. They assumed their track record would allow a new system to reasonably sell for $599.99. Combine this with a hard-to-work-with architecture, and you’ve got about 3 years before things finally start turning around (more notable results came in 2010).

    2. You saying the PS1 and PS2 where better then N64 and Gamecube do to 3rd parties? Cause for me you dont get a Nintendo console for 3rd partys. You get it for 1st party. N64 and GC are better then PS1 and PS2 IMO. However at least with the PS1 and even the PS2 I had abit of respect for Sony.

      1. Yeah, Nintendo’s first party games are incredible, the best around, and worth buying the system to me, but the playstation has managed to sustain a healthy lifespan, and constantly have games worth buying. Nintendo hasnt.

        1. Very on point here. As much as I loved what came out for N64, Playstation and its 3rd parties dominated. Square went straight to them. I remember the first time playing Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Twisted metal 2, Metal gear Solid, and so, and so on. I hope fanboys remember that specs on a hardware isn’t everything.

            1. Point is Nintendo had great first party, but Sony had 3rd parties on lock at the time. C’mon be a little open-minded here.

      1. Keep in mind that when you point fingers at someone, you have three fingers pointing at yourself. In other words, look in a mirror.

    3. The ps1 was nowhere near as good as the N64 . OK so the N64 had 0 RPG’s , but it had ocarina , majoras mask , goldeneye , perfect dark , banjo kazooie , MK64 ,smash bros etc .

The n64 was way better than ps1 :) . The gamecube had some amazing must buy games aswell , but the ps2 did offer a lot more overall.

  7. I find their statement that they consider Nintendo competition amusing, when I consider the fact that Nintendo has stated more than one time before that they don’t do direct competition with the other two and prefer to do things their own way.
Looks like the nervousness and cautious watching is one-sided.

    1. Yeah that’s why nintendo cut the price on the 3DS after the vitas price was announce, because its all one sided right?

  8. Why is it that only the US division of Sony is run by an asshole? The UK and JPN divisions have a sense of respect towards their competition…

  9. *Sony PS4 announcement* Look!!!!!!!! A brand new controller with a full HD resolution touch screen!!!!!!!! and back touchpad like the Vita!!!!!!! Huh? What’s a Wii U? This is completely original!!!!!!!!

    1. Unfortunatly, i can see them doing this :| not that id “mind”, but Sony needs to do what the Xbox is doing, but better, at the same or slightly more price.

      1. I’d expect them to take the “proprietary” approach and not really tread far beyond the Sony brand, despite the fact that Smartglass works with non-Microsoft devices.

The extra screen certainly appears to be the “Home Button” of this generation, in that it’s the thing every console will have.

        1. There is no reason for them to go the Nintentard route and stick a shitty screen into the controller to piss off their consumers. Leave that crap to Nintendon’t.

  10. I think his comments are pretty fair. Obviously any competitor would watch what the competition is doing. I’m just worried that they will make a Wii U clone for the PS4. IMO, Nintendo is not their real competition as much as Microsoft is. Yeah Nintendo is gaining a lot of Japanese exclusives but Microsoft got Final Fantasy XIII which was a huge blow to Sony. I think Sony needs to come up with creative ways to get more exclusives away from Microsoft if it wants to remain in this business and then worry about Nintendo later.

  11. Well said, sony. Being respectful of the competition without praising it and putting unnecessary limelight on it. Carry on.

  12. @Sony did not even copy them until years after Wii and now they going look at it just to copy again. Face it Sony you copied Wii even if it is a tiny bit different. ps1 and ps2 never had to copy consoles and that is your downfall so until ps4 i aint buying you

    1. Sony never copied the Wii. Why do people keep thinking that? They started development of the PS Move in 2001, and the Wii Development started in 2001. How did they copy?

      1. Do you honestly believe information like this is never falsified? Oh, they got to market first, but WE started making the exact same thing year ago? I call bullshit. Just like you could argue that the Battle Royale formula has been used before Nintendo, but the fact is Nintendo brought it to the level it’s at today. Enter: Sony with it’s Smash Bros. clone. Sony is on Nintendo’s d*ck so of course they’re watching. C’mon, Move ripping off the Wii remote, Battle Royale ripping off Smash Bros, and now they’re preparing for the Wii U launch by stating the PS3/Vita combo can do what the Wii U can do. When Nintendo drops hits, Sony is sure to clone them. It’s more than coincidence, especially with the direct comparison to the Wii U with Sony’s products. Im not a Nintendo fanboy, but you have to be blind not to see this.

  13. Everyone is always watching Nintendo. They’re just waiting to see if the Wii U is successful or not, then they’ll be all over that shit. It will be, so you already know what happens next. Leave luck to heaven.

  14. Sorny already copied Nintendo by saying that the Ps3 and Vita does the “same” as Wii U.
Sorny watch and learn and what it means to be more original than copycat.

  15. Hate Sony for copy a lot of Nintendo’s ideas. -_- . Microsoft too with smartglass. Why they heck they didn’t do the same thing before WiiU was announced? huh? Moth… fuc….

  16. I like how this guy isn’t flaming Nintendo, unlike the other guys from Sony. And to be fair, of course they have to keep an eye out for the Wii U to see if it sells or not, I’m pretty sure every hardware maker does this.

  17. Of course they’ll keep an eye on it, the thieving bastards. Then, if the Wii U is successful, they’ll come up with a full and proper copy of it.

  18. Sony should be watching Apple, the ones who are really taking the market. Thats what Nintendo did when they attached an iPa…I mean touch screen controller.

  19. Nintendo reinvented how we play games on our home console back in 1984-5 with the Dpad and everyone copied them (Sega, Turbographix, Neo Geo, Playstation). Nintendo reinvented the way we play video games with the N64 and the analog stick and 3D games that controlled well, and everyone copied them (Sega, Playstation). They even copy there games every time, whether it was everyone trying to copy Mario and failed or how everyone copies Zelda franchises and Metroid. All the 3D games owe themselves to Mario 64 and LOZ Ocarina in Time. Nintendo reinvented home consoles again with Wii, yes it had flaws, but everyone copied them again (Move, Kinect). Now they are ripping off Smash Bros like they ripped off Mario Kart, and they will rip off Wii U Gamepad. But the worse part is that they don’t give credit where credit is due. This whole industry would not exist if not for Nintendo. It died with Warner Bros taking over Atari, and Nintendo brought home consoles to life again. There would be no Xbox, no Playstation, no Capcom, no Konami, if Nintendo didn’t show them how to be successful in a difficult market, and Nintendo did it by making quality products and quality games with top entertainment experiences.

  20. He should have said “Of course we’re gonna watch what Wii U does, so we can copy what’s popular with it on our next consoles, because that’s what Sony does best.”

  21. Nintendo goes all the way back to Donkey Kong and it was probably the first time anyone jumped from platform to platform and jumped over barrels thus inventing the first platformer.

  22. Easy comment to come up woth personally, of course you watch the people who had the most successful console last gen. But, at least he wasn’t being rude.

  23. Sony copied SSB fighting game too. They also tried copying Pikmin by using army men instead of original unique creatures. All Sony does is copy Nintendo but puts more power inside it. The Move is just a more sensitive Wiimote. But hell if you come out with a new product first, of course rivals would find all the threats and weaknesses and put it on their next console. As for Sony saying Nintendo is not their direct competitor? BS. Then why did Sony advertise the Move with parents and adults in the living room playing the game? Why did Sony show the Move being played in nursing homes?

  24. Also Nintendo was the first to introduce 4 players and a rumble pak. Sony copied it but made the rumble pak within the controller. All Sony does is copy Nintendo but just makes it more powerful.

  25. Oh and the Game boy Advance was a controller for the Game cube. So no Ninety didn’t copying Sony for that! I’m jtz who wants to challenge me? All Sony is is a more powerful Nintendo console.

  26. Sony, shut up and go make some games for Vita, in quality and quantity, come on, your good at it, you did it with PS3 in the last years (and you need it), now rise and repeat, and be smart with PS4. Your game library in the past few years is insane, so insane that I was forced to sell my PS3, because I just don’t have so much free time like in the past, and being forced to choose the best ones and most favorites was driving me crazy. I am moving to Wii U and the few games of my interest that I know will grant me fun without a lot of commitment. And stop being so arrogant, thats what I feel in your comments.

  27. As for accusing Nintendo of copying a webcam? Please there are so many tablets with Webcams how you know Sony was the one Ninty copied. We have Motorola Zoom, Apple I pad, Acer, Toshiba and Microsoft.

  28. Nintendo rules in best plat former games. Actually Rare did. But Ninty is next. That’s why Nintendo has to buy those Rare IP’s so they can bring us some more Kazooie. Crash Bandicoup sucked. Banjo was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better. Also Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart was better than Crash Bandicoop racing. Sony copied Mario Kart btw. That tells you why does Nintendo need Rare’s IP’s if Sony can rip off SSBB why can’t Nintendo or Retro rip off Kazooie?

  29. So what was that again about Sony always dissing Nintendo? They don’t. There are those who do and there are those who don’t. But all three companies respect each other and tend to only say what they say to get their products out and selling.

  30. Nintendo did mistakes and learned, and the same goes for Sony….. Sega also did mistakes. Only MS did less mistakes…. example, MS is smart and thats why the Xbox 360 is “balanced”, in other words, not too much money like PS3 in beginning, real cores aka easy for developers… “DirectX PC in box” aka easier to port games on PC. So, Xbox 360 is the primary platform for most multiplatform 3rd party games (80%), and MS was clever with Xbox 360 and PC combo aka support for Xbox 360 controller on PC.

I prefer Nintendo (most respect) but i like Sony too (they are great)…. but i must admit that MS is very smart (thats nothing strange, MS is a big software company… they know what hardware can eat aka they knw how to balance things).
