GameSpot Says Wii U Version Of Rayman Legends Is Worst Version

murphy_rayman_legends

US gaming publication GameSpot has reviewed Rayman Legends on Xbox 360 and Wii U and concludes that the Wii U version is the worst of the bunch. The publication says that this is simply down to the Murfy stages which utilise the Wii U GamePad touchscreen. The reviewer claims that these stages break the flow of the game. GameSpot has awarded the game 8.0 on the Wii U, while the Xbox 360 version has scored 9.0.

“Legends on the Wii U slams on the breaks in certain levels by putting you in control of Murfy, a helpful fly, while the AI moves Rayman. Here, you must shift your focus to the GamePad as you spread guacamole and ready catapults in an attempt to guide your bipedal friend to safety. These levels are a noticeable misstep in a game bursting with great ideas. Rayman walks forward without any involvement from you for long stretches, and oftentimes waits stubbornly while you try to pull object in the exact place he desires. Vacillating between passive and fiddly is a poor way to inject diversity. Even when things run smoothly, controlling Murfy isn’t engaging because progress requires neither puzzle solving nor dexterity on your part. There is some appeal in playing with a friend because anyone controlling Murfy can torment his or her friend. But, Legends stumbles in these stages, especially compared to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions in which you control Murfy with a button tap while running as Rayman.”

      1. I personally played the various demos and Murphy controlled fine. So far I think IGN said it best though where they explained that Murphy makes the WiiU a better multiplayer experience than a single player. Will have to make up my mind after I finish the game though

      2. I have played it on Wii U, PC and PS3 and I think the Wii U version is the best. It’s also way better co-op on Wii U. This GameStop guy must not have any friends.

    1. Yup. Pretty much every other review describes reducing the Murfy levels to a press of a button as missing the point or as not being enjoyable at all.

      Dat click bait.

      1. Of course, whenever somebody doesn’t like something, it’s obvious that they “can’t have played it”, right? I have, and I didn’t like it. Level design lacks structure and the difficulty ofttimes spoils the fun. Ubisoft have a lot to learn from other companies, and need to stop living in their creative bubble.

        1. I’m also a guy who couldn’t get into Rayman Origins, and stopped playing it cause I didn’t feel like having fun when playing it. However, I can easily see why it gets so much love, and will say it is an awesome game. But it isn’t for “everyone” that’s for sure. It sure had a rayman feeling though, and I’m sure I would get addicted to it, if I played more…

        2. I have to say, I didn’t like Origins either, but everything I didn’t like in that game was pretty much rendered nonexistent in Legends. I personally found it to be very fun.

    1. What are you talking about? Rayman 2 and 3 were masterpieces! Personally the only rayman I truly disliked were all games involving rabbids..

  1. Is gamespot after all. When next gen consoles come out they will still say that the 360 version is better than the ps4 one.

      1. I think perhaps he was alluding more to a journalistic agenda, instead of the text book definition of bias, I don’t know I might be wrong. Over the years I have found gaming websites becoming more and more like the music magazines of old like NME, agendas, click baiting headlines, crap like that. IGN used to be a site I found insightful, now with reviewers giving scores like 9.5 to ‘Gone Home’ it’s lost credibility for me.

        1. This. A thousand times this.

The problem isn’t the oh so almighty right of opinion (which you do have, but that doesn’t mean you should not strive to be objective when writing a professional analysis – and that’s for everything, not just games). The problem is using that as a cover-up for an agenda, for clickbaiting, or for show.

Thankfully, most people see right through such ruses. The problem is to convince them to NOT click on such reviews, since once you do, the reviewer/site couldn’t care less if you can see through the ruse or not – the main goal has already been achieved.

Commenting is even worse as it tends to generate more pageviews, and then they achieve their occasional secondary goal: to promote an agenda. Even when lots of people chime in AGAINST a clear agenda in a review, this still brings awareness to that agenda, and it takes those that support these agendas out – generating even more pageviews.

The only solution I can find these days is to avoid the bigger gaming sites altogether. Funny enough, that means looking more at Metacritic than usual. You can readily notice which reviews seem legit by reading the Metacritic summary alone with time. For example, judging by the ‘argument’ used and the fact that this is a platformer, I’m sure this GameSpot review was written by Tom McShea. I don’t need to click on it.

  2. Get some friends IGN. I don’t take IGN’s reviews seriously anymore, they are so biased against nintendo consoles. If you want to read a review that is non bull I suggest reading on “nintendolife.com” they review solely on one console and don’t compare a horse’s dick to the other. IGN fuck you.

        1. since when did IGN ever hate on Nintendo… Look at their review for 3DS games and then look at gamespot.
          EG : Luigi mansion

    1. If u want someone thats not my definition of biased against nintendo go to a nintendo fan site lol no surprise. I got a better one for u >www.nintendoslave.iwillbuyanyshitnintendoapprovedbecauseimatool.com/allnintendogameraregoodorelseyoureatroll

  3. I feel like some people just don’t get the Wii U. The benefits of the Gamepad are quite clear for this game. It was first designed to be used with it and ported after to the other consoles which lack the ability to do what the Wii U does. I guess some people are just stuck in their ways.

    1. I wish it was that simple. The same guy praised Gunstringer of all Kinect games – yeah, that one with autorunning platform levels where you can raise your hand to jump so high and far that you’d need to be retarted to ever fall in a hole, even if drunk and on your first try.

And a couple of months later the studio that made that game was bought by Microsoft.

The sad thing is that I’d have MORE respect for such reviewers if they DID get paid for stuff like this. But no, they didn’t. They praised Gunstringer out of camaraderie, to ensure their pet indie developer friends wouldn’t miss the buying opportunity.

  4. okay people this is bull crap x 100 those levels are ment to be played by two people one on the gamepad another on the pro controller THIS IS PROOF EVERYONE IS TRYING TO SABOTAGE NINTENDO AND THE WIIU FUCK GAMESPOT

  5. So you would rather play touching a button repatedly to control Murphy while running and jumping, than to play in a completely different and new way. The Murphy levels in the PS3, XBox360 version are pretty much normal levels, with a little bit more button slamming.

    1. . It’s funny how it cones up after sales results between all three consoles. Foundry tried saying PS3/X360 version of Splinter Cell were better than Wii U version as well. Yeah it’s Microsoft.

    1. and we ALL know thats BS, zombie u is so obviously on the same sparring level as any resident evil game or bioshock game!! it blew me away with how scary it was i nearly had a cardic arrest when i first saw myself zombified!! O-O

  6. hahahahahaahaha this is funny, i don’t got any poblem playing the Murphy levels alone…. But playing it with a other person make it easy and is also fun!

    1. thats not the problem the general public is going to see the wiiu version as inferior which is not just some idiot reviewer that has his own opinions individual review they fucken never do that with other game get the same score overall

      1. and who gives a fuck? seriusly who? i am a xbox360 user and i enjoy mmy rayman legend versions but what if i regard this one as superior from the wii u? if you are going to buy your copy and enjoy it why the fuck would you even consider my thoughts? that is silly and immature. Enjoy your game while i enjoy mine who gives a fuck about what you are NOT going to be able to play? u.u videogame scene is getting ruined by xbot, soniers and nintendo fanboys, screw you all.

  7. I use to like GameSpot. But most of the games that I like, they claim they suck and I actually enjoyed those sucky games. GameSpot can kiss my Asian ass. Lol

  8. I used to like GameSpot. A lot of the games that they say, sucks, are usually the ones that other sites praise. And I actually like a lot of the sucky games to GameSpot claims that suck.

  9. so basicly the wii u version is more hard because you need to use the 2nd screen and not just a simple button and that make the game the worst? this people are the worst games journalist ever….they always crying because mario…rayman and platform game are to easy and for kids and when a company give them a real challenge they bitch about it..waooo

    1. you’re spot on man!

oh yeah, the kids games argument. loving it. they look at dk country returns, it’s colourful, funny…it MUST be a kids game right?
in fact, it’s a freaking 2d platformer demons souls.

      1. True true 99 ballons where destroyed in just one level when I was playing it and I’m more than average gamer I may even call my self expert.

  10. Typical…

I’m sure all Wii U versions games ar eall the worst by default…

Whatever I’m done with these western hypocrites…

    1. how do i rewire this tool i think it blew a fuse??*looks in the back*made in china?argh! piece of shit!*kicks* “ZZT ZZT ca-CHUNK…
      DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER!”
might as well throw it in the garbage where it belongs…

  11. whaaat??? i play this coop. more than halfway throgh the game now. a friend plays murfy on the pad. i play as rayman. THIS is where the gamepad really shines. it’s perfect…and i mean perfect. it’s insane fun…
    seriously. the guy..wow…

  12. “I was havig so much fun playing the game, I forgot I was playing it on Wii U until I had to do more than press a button aand remembered THIS IS THE SUCKY WII U VERSION.”

That’s what the reviewer said, right?

  13. Once the xboxdone is out of the console race, ms and their nonsense leave too. Then it will be gaming as usual. No matter how hard ms money hat, xboxone is shaping to be their last console. Imagine that bright future with no xbox machine that only thrives on third parties. With worse first party offers that the 2600 atari.

  14. Ray man sucks and I’m not surprised the Wii U is the worst one. The Wii U is always the worst one for 3rd party games (no DLC or online multiplayer for some etc) 3rd parties just shouldn’t be on Wii U since they always blow

  15. Um, Rayman Legends was originally a Wii U exclusive that was specifically designed FOR the GamePad and had levels designed SPECIFICALLY to show off the use of the GamePad. The 360 and PS3 versions are PORTS of the Wii U version. The Murfy stages do not “break the flow” of the game because they ARE the flow of the game’s original design.

It’s really says that Gamespot actually is legally allowed to collect money for posting stuff like this. A definite sign we are in the end times. Complete unabashed stupidity and arrogance. Some jealously I suspect as well.

    1. Next when Wii U gets same games as PS4 and Xbone watch reviewers are going to make it seem that holding a tablet for hours as a second screen is better than the GamePad. Also they are going to say the Vita PS4 controller is better than the Gamepad as well…who wants to bet?

      1. It’s a nailed on certainty, only because the Vita is a dedicated handheld device. However, why would one want to pay upwards of say £500 for a Vita and PS4 when one can spend less on a Wii U alone, and still spend less if they decided to go for a 3DS with that same purchase?

    1. i know right? skyward sword was soOOoo much better than ocarina of time&therefore deserved a 10+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  16. Yeah… no. All bullshit.
The Wii U version is the original and optimised version the game was designed for. It plays the best. I’ve had no qualms with the demo, and I did try both the 360 and Wii U versions at an in-store kiosk. The 360 version played rather generically and felt like your typical run-of-the-mill game. The Wii U version felt more interactive, was running at 1080p, was running smoother and felt like the game was designed for it. The only other version that may rival the Wii U version is the Vita version.

I know what I’m spending my money on.

    1. Atleast in my country there is no rivalry for Wii U version. Vita version propably must be played alone. It seems that almost nobody owns Vita in Finland.

Before buying i played 3 different demo versions of Rayman Legends and Wii U version had best Co-op gameplay so i bought that.

  17. That’s the same guy who reviewed skyward sword and gave it a mediocre score because he couldn’t figure out motion controls made so children would understand them…

  18. I like the flow of the Murphy levels. This way you get a much more diverse experience. But for each his own. Who wants all levels to nearly play the same should choose another version. I prefer diversity. I tried the game on a 360 at my game shop and the levels play good. But i prefer the Wii U way of experiencing the game.

  19. BoyCreditsMarioKartAfter TakingControlOfCar&SavingLives takes the cake.

But if u went to my link u’d find bettr like:NINTENDO SAVES PUPPY FROM DROWNING
NINTENDO HELPS WOMAN GIVE BIRTH TO BABY IN A BURNING HOME
& NINTENDO TOOK A BULLET FOR THE PRESIDENT

  20. A few years ago I quit going to gamespot for any video game news, especially Nintendo related! They are the most biased and simple minded bunch of tools on any gaming website I have ever seen, plus tey are owned by cnet part of MS, so what kind of reviews can you expect for the Wii U review? The Wii U version has gotten stellar remarks across the board, but gamespot has to keep their biased “chode-eating” bullshit going otherwise they would never have traffic! Why even post this here? Iceazima has some valid points, but is just looking to cause trouble in the comments section, by sending this in.

  21. Really? It has been proven that the wii u version is the superior version, even said by Ubisoft themselves. It’s just more bias garbage hate yet again by gamestop towards nintendo. watch the vita version get a 9 too, when its supposed to be like the wii u version.

Oh and of course the icebitch is the one that sent this in. He just HAD to find SOMETHING bad about the Wii U just to rub it in our faces! Stupid icetard go die! Just kill yourself or something.

    1. Eurogamer gets it!! There is no way in hell a game that was originally made for one consile could be better as a PORT onto other consoles… weaker consoles I may add. It just isn’t possible. 💋

  22. the icebozo would be the one to post this. what a douche lol. he’ll find anything that puts down wiiu and post it. i guess hes the ‘cool’ guy! but seriously, who cares about gamespots opinion?

  23. I’m gonna respectfully disagree. I’ve played both the Wii U and 360 versions, and on the 360 demo, the Murphy levels are a bit more tedious. Trying to jump while at the same time holding B is annoying, and got me killed several times. Plus, in the cake level where you are a duck, Murphy will only go through a set section of the cake, which isn’t always the easiest. Also…

“Rayman walks forward without any involvement from you for long stretches, and oftentimes waits stubbornly while you try to pull object in the exact place he desires.”

Murphy’s dungeon would like to have a word with you. Those stages, especially the “As far as you can!” ones are immensely difficult as you approach 1,000 meters. Oh, one more thing…

    “Murphy, a helpful fly…”

He’s a Greenbottle. How dare this reviewer miss such a tiny detail. (loljk, Greenbottles are flies, that’s just the correct name for them)

  24. Is it because the Wii U version wasn’t simplified for GameSpot’s tiny brains?

I love how they bitch and moan about the Wii U and never say anything good about it but when it comes to the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 or Xbox One they just suck Sony and/or Microsoft off and praising their versions even though they selling way less than the Wii U version.

  25. Probably a review by another moron who doesn’t like anything new and can’t figure out how to use the gamepad because it’s different.

  26. Pingback: Digital Foundry: Rayman Legends Is Fantastic On All Platforms, Wii U Is The Definitive Version | My Nintendo News

  27. I used to listen to gamespot reviews, before they were actually a well respected reviewers who would give all video games a fair review, but now lately they turned into critics. They’ll love everything Microsoft puts up even the Xbox one, and turned into major Nintendo critics saying the Wii U isn’t even a next-gen console. I only listen to IGN now because their much more professionally and their reviews are fair.

  28. are they kidding? pretty much everyone else is saying the wii u version is best… now i no way of comparing them but the wii u version plays pretty damn great

  29. Gamespot reviewers are morons. While someone´s can have fun with the Ps3 and 360 versions, the WiiU version is the definite one. The game was designed specifically for that platform and the touchscreen sections works flawlessly

  30. It’s okay gamespot, you continue to make yourself irrelevant by deducting whole points from games just because it makes you feel better. I don’t mind, I’ll just collect my points with some other publication. The points that you stole from me! >:D
