Miyamoto Says “Aonuma Doesn’t Need Me Anymore”

linkzelda

Legendary Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto has confessed that Eiji Aonuma doesn’t need him around anymore. Miyamoto says that Aonuma is such a proficient developer now that he doesn’t really need any guidance from him these days. Miyamoto went on to say that it’s the same with other high-profile Nintendo developers. He feels he has trained them up to the best of their abilities and therefore they should be able to spread their wings.

“As you saw at our presentation at E3, Mr Aonuma chased me off stage… he doesn’t need me any more! The final responsibility for the title still comes down to me and I’m still involved in the games, but I’m definitely able to leave the series up to him in a way.”

“I don’t have to look at every minute detail of every game any more. I know there’s going to be the level of quality that we expect under his supervision.”

“Similarly we have Koizumi-san, who’s the producer or the Mario series and it’s the same type of situation. And certainly Konno-san with Mario Kart, too. And Mr Eguchi, producer of the Animal Crossing series. These are the main producers that we’ve trained who are talented enough and we can allow them to oversee the project and manage all the details and still maintain the Nintendo level of quality.”

    1. Woah, woah, woah, woah……Aonuma destroyed the series, it was all good until twilight princess…and then, holy shieet, skyward sword “we don’t need an overworld, we’ll have the sky, the empty-ass sky”

      1. First of all, the series is not destroyed just because you don’t like it. Secondly, he have been working on Zelda since OoT!

      2. The sky is a hub to connect the 3 Overworlds the game has. That’s like calling the globe or the towns in Sonic Unleashed an Overworld.

      3. The series has not been destroyed nor were those games terrible. I agree that the lack of an overworld in Skyward Sword was disappointing, but there is still an excellent game in there if you can look past that.

      4. Skyward Sword wasn’t an OoT clone, therefore you don’t like it, essentially. Ignore the fact that it contained some of the best dungeons in the series, that’s not important. It doesn’t fit your narrow definition of what a Zelda game should be.

  1. Miyamoto is too modest. From what I’ve seen so far, Aonuma doesn’t match with Miyamoto’s genius. Maintain the legendary Zelda series is too much pressure for the man, he doesn’t want to take risks and doesn’t surprise the fans anymore.

    1. The guy knows that Wind Waker was their strongest Zelda game, which aside from dungeons being a little worse, is truely the best 3D Zelda, in terms of an entire package (Twilight Princess would be the best if it didn’t look really bad, and kind generic, easily the best dungeons in the series though)

I hope you’re right. I haven’t played WW yet but I’m getting WWHD. I don’t really have any clear expectations, but I am keeping them low. I hope it surprises me.

        1. I wouldn’t say that WW is the best episode of the series, but I may not be very objective here as OoT is my favourite game of all time :p But it sure is a damn helluva great game ( yeah, like that ), it keeps all the good aspects of a Zelda but at the same time renews the series and takes risks. You sure will love it. I did, a while ago, on gamecube and that’s why I’m buying a Wii U + WW HD pack.

  2. Majoras Mask was awesome! I hope Next BIG WiiU Zelda will be something similiar but BIGGER. No other game has ever given so exciting sidequests.

  3. Good.

We love you, Miyamoto, but Aonuma knows not to hold our hand, which is why he made Wind Waker even better than it already was, you would of added tons of tutorials and shit.

Super pumped for the new WiiU Zelda.

Now just a real Mario game, Metroid, Star Fox (cough, Platinum, cough), and do your new IP’s, and let guys like Intellegent Systems make new stuff, and other teams of yours and we’ll be happy. And keep supporting Platinum and Atlus!

    1. star fox from platinum, metroid and f-zero from retro…. and a new mother game (how i wish :P)… my life would be complete

      1. Ehhh, id like to see someone else do a Metroid game, even though the Prime Trilogy is one of my favourite games ever.

Maybe Vigil, or whatever’s left of Vigil, because their level design is really cool, and great to explore, and the nailed platforming traversal in Darksiders 2.

But the guy i want to make one if Shinji Mikami, the father of survival horror, who would do wonders in terms of exploration in a Metroid game, but he also directed Vanquish, which is the greatest 3rd person shooter ever, and if Metroid played similar or as well as Vanquish, i’d fucking die.

        1. but that would be less likely since they dont even care about nintendo… in my opinion, nintendo’s only hope are 1st party, ubisoft, sega, capcom (look at MH4. hehe)… i just stated what is more likely to happen. besides, as stated in an earlier article: “Miyamoto: Retro Studios Will Be Considered For Another Metroid Game”

        2. TheDragon243,They let Team Ninja make the last Metroid and look how well that went over.Retro would make another good if not great game.Nintendo can’t afford to gamble on this franchise again. Two dud’s in a row could destroy the series for years if not forever. Nintendo need’s a sure thing this time around. And only retro can deliver that.

          1. And Capcom made a good Zelda game.

It’s got nothing to do with “taking a chance”, it’s picking a developer that isn’t fucking shit.

  4. mr miyamoto just make sure next zelda is like TP graphics i dont want another WW type of graphics game. im just saying since we know Aonuma loves toon Link.
just bring me zelda tech demo type of game.

    1. It won’t be either. It’ll be whatever they want.

Frankly the “TP” art style is kinda bland. Not to mention it’s aged horribly. They need to take a leaf out of WW’s book and make an art style that matches the system, and in 10-20 years, won’t look old or dated, and still beautiful.

I’d like them to actually do what they said the SS art style was going to be like, yet wasn’t at all, and have the game look like the water colour painting concept art, where Link’s sword slashes would leave a blue trail.

      1. Wind Waker was on a system that really didn’t serve well from realistic visuals; you said yourself (further up the page) that Twilight Princess aged horribly. Whereas now, the Wii U (especially judging by the tech demo) is a console that can compliment a nice looking, realistic Zelda game very well.

      1. id enjoy it if the art style was a mixture between TP and SS, Twilight Princess had detailed graphics as well as a great story, but on the down side, it was completely void of bright cheery colours, it just didn’t have that texture that most Zelda games are known for, Skyward Sword did have those colours but felt too cartoony compared to twilight princess, basically if they could give the next Zelda Wii U game, brighter colours as well as Twilight Princesses realist graphics and textures, that would be the ultimate Zelda game in my book

        1. TP was suppose to be dark and dreary and if they added bright colors it would have made the game have less of the effect it had of showing that everyone was miserable

        2. SherlockWillFightBilbo

          I couldn’t agree more :P

My scruple with TP was that it was realistic, but only dark and realistic. Nature in real life is beautiful and breathtaking. I would like TP’s graphics (albeit HD and timeless) but not as dark. Dark in the right dungeons and certain areas in the overworld, but gorgeous in others.

  6. Good, now he can go back to focusing on his own projects as producer (maybe even as director!) Miyamoto has to have another great IP or two or three in him before he retires, and I, for one, can’t wait!

  7. I agree in Zelda not needing help with Aonuma but Mario platformers need his help more than ever, a kind of Galaxy gameplay with a better story, new villians and more character development where you can actually see Peach trying to escape from Bowser for example or Mario realizing he needs Luigi’s help or something like that would be awesome to see.

  8. Yet without Miyamoto that special spark in games you work on is gone. Anouma is great and all. But come on, without Miyamoto around Zelda games cant match up to the great ones like Ocarina.

  9. Good man Miyamoto… you can tell hes trying to ease us in for when he retires……. anyway now he needs someone to handle mario, star fox, and metroid when he leaves
