Sonic Boom Dev Explains How They Got Sonic Contract, And There Might Be More In The Future

Bob Rafei, CEO and visual director at Big Red Button, has explained to CVG just how they managed to land the lucrative Sonic franchise. Rafei says Sega approached the studio in 2011 which mainly composed of Naughty Dog, High Impact Games, and Heavy Iron Studios developers, who have all focussed on third-person character action. Rafei later explained to the publication that he eventually hopes that the team will be allowed to create more games in the series, but I suspect it all depends on how Sonic Boom turns out.

“Sega came to us in 2011 and they had this big, bold plan that they showed us, and we were really blown away by what they were trying to do, and it fit right in with what we are trying to do as a studio as well.”

“So given the team’s background – there’s a lot of guys from Naughty Dog, from High Impact Games, from Heavy Iron Studios – we’re all focusing on third-person character action. And given our history with stylized character platformers, it was a great fit. And given that they really wanted to do something different, it was an opportunity that we couldn’t turn down.”

“We had been working with the CryEngine up to that point, and we just decided we can still make it work. Sega wasn’t quite sure, but I think that at the end of the day they saw what we can do with it, and everybody seems to be very pleased.”

“I’d like to [make more Sonic games], for sure. That’s always my dream. It’s a very cool world, it’s a very interesting mix of characters that have been developed across all of the media. I’d love to explore the world in even bigger and greater ways in the future, if possible.”

  1. This legitimately has a chance to be awesome.
With anything made by Sonic Team it’s always “Probably bad…but you never know”. It’s nice to see Sega embrace fresh blood with their mascot IP…something a certain other company should be doing with it’s smaller IP’s starring blonde space bounty hunters, space pilot foxes, and space/future hover speeder race drivers.

If games and anime have taught us anything, it’s “GO TO SPACE”, that’s where the most insane shit happens
    SPOILER: (Gurren Lagann, Wonderful 101).

    1. Well they’ve done it before with retro and team ninja making metroid and sega making F zero Gx, so why aren’t they doing it now when they need it the most

      1. Well Team Ninja can fuck off honestly, that game was…just bad, but yeah, it makes no sense.
Well, Star Fox and Fzero have an “explaination”….Miyamoto. He won’t let it happen (Which is why he needs to retire), but no Metroid doesn’t make sense, other than them prioritising IP’s, but no excuse for lack of a 3DS sidescroller Metroid game.

        1. It wasn’t their fault the game was bad, the main bad thing was the story and they didn’t even write that, If they had used the nunchuk that game could have been so much better

          1. It’s was their fault, the actual GAME was not good, it’s was “fine”, but it was just boring, the art style was terrible, besides from Samus and the the suit, the gameplay was boring combat with admittidly flashy and satisfying take down moves, terrible platforming, uninterestig level design, terrible 1st person gimmick mechanic, no real sense of feeling like a “Metroid game”, no progression, not even the “item fanfare” was in the game, just some shit 1 second soundbyte.
The story was horrible, and just shat on the character and the lore, but it was hardly the only thing that made the game made.

          2. The main bad thing was d-pad for 3d field of movement. The secondary bad thing was stupid forced search sections (green blood on a green field, pitch black room, ughhh)

      1. Actually just remember Sega bought Atlus so not out of the realm of possibility….
It would be a shame to just cut off the ties to the mainline Persona series, BUT to be fair, if people are fans of it, they SHOULD go to it, much like Bayonetta.

        1. I’d imagine so. Nintendo has already had a very large amount of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise (1, 2, 4, strange journey, Devil Survivor, jack bros, demi kids, last bible… etc.) I honestly don’t think it’d be that big of a deal for SMT Persona to have appearances on Nintendo consoles.

      2. well atlus is part of sega so if they buy sega they get atlus. Nintendo would want Resident evil, ghost and goblin, Phoenix Wright, Street Fighter, Megaman, monster hunter, viewtiful joe and ect. It would be best to buy capcom as a whole. They can buy platinum and have them work on capcom ips

        1. Platinum won’t be bought, the reason the company exists is to not be owned, because of what happened when they all worked as Clover, when they were with Capcom.

But if Nintendo got hold of stuff like DMC, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, then Platinum would certainly work with Nintendo forever.

          1. Platinum ALREADY did Viewtiful Joe….that’s who Platinum are, they’re the guys who made it, as well as Okami, and alot of the team that’s responsible for Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 2, Kamiya made all of them.

              1. I think everyone does, which is why Capcom are shit and need to die, and hopefully that IP isn’t bought by any horrible publisher, which is actually quite unlikely, the only ones that’ll be potentially bought by a shit company are Resident Evil, MVC, and Street Fighter. Everything else “isn’t profitable”, so luckily they should be bought by a good publisher, Nintendo would be morons not to grab VJ, Megaman, DMC, a bunch of fighters like Rival Schools, and some weird minor IP’s.

    1. I’m pretty fed up with these stupid comments. Nintendo buy Sega!!! Nintendo buy Capcom!!! Nintendo buy Platinum!!! Nintendo buy Namco!!! None of those fucken companies are for sale. I have a better one: Nintendo buy Sony and Microsoft!!!

  2. I dunno.. Sonic games never really clicked for me. Its one of those franchises , that only the fans can love , I dont think it appeals to everyone unlike ,say mario. I kinda wish they devloped a 3rd person action instead.. cause cmon, Naughty dog ..!!

  3. Im really excited about this game, it seems so fresh for a Sonic game. And it makes sense to try really something new. Im also excited for the fact that its made in the west and it has lots of big veterans like Crash devs. I think that SonicTeam has runned out of ideas for Sonic so this is really good for SEGA too, SonicTeam should just focus on PhantasyStar games since they seem to be the ones they get somewhat right. Oh god this game is what ive been waitin as a Sonic fan.

    1. It would make sense since it’s a very cartoony style but we don’t even know If we’ll get more sonic boom games or if this will be the only one

      1. Well from the sounds of it they said they’ll be making more Sonic Boom games. Lets hope they make if a full on franchise :D

    2. If the Wii U was the portal of the Sonic Boom series it could either kill it or make the Wii U a huge success. Both Microsoft and Sony are planning series based on their IPs on their consoles. Nintendo needs to follow suit. If they do make Sonic Boom series is exclusive on the Wii U, Nintendo needs to start making series based on their IPs as well.

  4. I’m rooting for this game to be good, and if so, I will be getting it. They just need to realize that sonic for the past few years has sucked. cough Sonic 06 cough

  5. I find it funny how there hasn’t been a decent Sonic game in 9 years, Sonic Heroes was the last decent one, anything after it is shit… I’m having high hopes for this game though, the gameplay in the trailer looked astounding.

    1. This is actually a real bold change they have done for Sonic in years.

I get its a little much for your hypocrite fanboy mind to comprehend (wanting change for Sonic but hate it when you see it)

I’m still getting use to Knuckles being larger sterois based dude at this point like everyone else.

  6. Still having a bit of trouble getting used to these new designs.. Sonic bothers me the most, he looks weird, almost like a klingon from Star Trek.

I also don’t get why he is wearing mummy wrapped leggings or why Sonic and Tails shoes are wrapped up in bandages now.
