Super Smash Bros Release Date Won’t Be Revealed During Direct, Rather A “Rough Release Window”

Super Smash Bros. has been penned for a 2014 release date for a good numbers of months now, but those who thought an official date could be on the cards in today’s Direct will just have to wait a little longer. According to a tweet from Japan’s Super Smash Bros. Twitter account, the Direct will only reveal a “rough release window” for the upcoming brawler. Many are under the impression Nintendo could be saving news of the official release date for E3 later this year. Here’s what the tweet says, translated by Siliconera.

“[Notice] We are currently not at a stage where we can announce a concrete release date; however, in tomorrow’s broadcast, we will be revealing a rough release window.”

        1. A newcomer isn’t worth the wait of watching a direct at 11pm?
Yeah, you shouldn’t even bother about the game in general then…

          1. It’s 3 pm pacific time, not japan time. That means if you live in New York it’s 6 o’clock and so on so forth. If you want to wait till 11 to look up what happened five hours prior fine by me

        2. The release date is the deal breaker for you here? Sure it would be nice to know, but there’s a ton of stuff they’re gonna announce tonight that it’ll be worth it. Why do you think they’re dedicating a whole direct to it?

  1. nintendo and there release windows crap again. the same thing happened for the wii u launch. this game will be out on the last day of 2014 smh

  2. Wow Nintendo. Your well is so dry that your customers are pleading for a flippin’ release date… I know you guys apparently hired a bunch of people. Hire more. When everything- games, updates, commercials, release dates, promised features- come at such a slow pace, even your die-hard fans are gonna start looking elsewhere for entertainment.

    1. I agree, WiiU is a great system but Nintendo is so slow to deliver stuff, what was the last big major release for it? Oh yeah SM3DW which came last christmas. This is why Nintendo should had worked on more powerful system so there would be 3rd party stuff to keep on waitin. Well atleast i have my Ps3 and 3DS to keep me occupied for next big WiiU title.

      1. For me dkctf was a major release as well, i would almost call it the best platformer i have ever played except for some exceptions. But yeah nintendo is far too slow on their own without 3rd parties

        1. It’s working on HD graphics for one the very first times. It takes time plus its smadh bros. I dont care how long it takes. If this game doesnt sell wii u after mario kart 8 then nothing will.

          1. Idk, Dynasty Warriors is pretty damn huge in japan so Hyrule Warriors (or what ever its called) may just be Nintendos System seller over there.

  3. Nintendo’s “Release Windows” are just ways for them to not feel as bad when they delay a title. … You know, like every single WiiU launch title.
    Damn it Nintendo.

        1. Nintendo is my Blood

And that means you can judge them more harshly? why don’t you hold the company that belonged to the wealthiest man in the world to that high a standard?

          1. I’m not jaded because of this game being delayed. That’s small potatoes. It’s been the whole WiiU cluster fuck that followed the 3DS clusterfuck. It’s having stuck with them through an era of shitty graphics while everyone was gaming in HD last Gen.

They have the best games. They have my childhood, but that gives them no right to be stupid. I have a laundry list of fuck-UPS, half of which they already acknowledge, most of which they apologized for, and some they are just blind to.

The ONLY reason I put up with their bullshit, is because I still believe gaming means more to them than money, and they actually still care about gamers, even if they are grossly blind to what we want and lost their respect with the rest of the world.

If there is anything remotely true about Karma, I’d like to believe they will bounce back since they are a wholesome company. Uncommon these days.

            1. One thing I will say I like about iwata the most is that he is kind to his employees unlike sony who just fires people after every damn quarter

            2. Just fucking relax people. There are other things to do and wait for in life than one fucking game you clearly know its coming later this year. Jesus Christ…

              1. I’m with Stranga, who cares when it’s realeased? SURE, We’d all love to play it NOW, but don’t freak out if the release date isn’t as soon as you want it! There’s more to life than video games! Holy wow!

            3. Nintendo is my Blood

Your feeling are valid and your points are too
              However…
No company is perfect and as much as I hate to say it, that includes Nintendo, Nintendo have screwed up, minorly and majorly but it is how we as gamers treat their mistakes them defines them as major and minor

Of course I be accused of defending Nintendo, because if I don’t who will?
We live in a world where people complain for the sake of complaining and I ask you this
Are you going to take Nintendo’s side only when they succeed but go against them when they fail so you can be on the winning side
Or are you going to stick to one belief and stand by it?

              1. I always side with Nintendo as a company, but I challenge their business decisions. They receive a large chunk of my disposable income, as a consumer, I have a right to voice my opinion, even if they don’t have to listen. If they stop providing the services, entertainment or quality I expect, they stop getting my money.

I’m not flipping to a different game system if they continue to fail, I’m going to find a new hobby all together. All because of this Smash delay!!! (just kidding.)

Obviously our discussion has rabbit trailed beyond the scope of this article, but let’s just be honest, MNN has become a gaming social network for those of us that have been here for years. ;D

            4. Kind of reminds me of another childhood company I still love. As much as I still love the place, Disney World is currently going at slower than a snail’s pace with adding new rides. Meanwhile, Universal Orlando is opening amazing new rides EVERY YEAR. In the time it took Disney to fully build the Fantasyland expansion (which only adds two rides and took away an existing one for a fucking princess meet n’ greet) Universal added a whole Harry Potter land, a Despicable Me ride, Transformers (which was built at a lightening fast pace from demolition of an old building to the building of the new one in just over 1 year), a full Springfield land to go with the existing Simpsons ride, and is now going to open a whole new amazing expansion to Harry Potter this summer. The next thing we have to look forward to at Disney won’t open till fucking 2017 when we get Avatar. I love the place to death, but I want the current people running it fired and replaced. But it won’t happen as long as they’re making big bucks ;(

                1. Hey I rather have a complete game than have to buy another portion of it via dlc cough call of duty and every other game on the other systems.

                2. It doesn’t stop with new ride additions, the cheap bastards can’t even pay for proper maintenance of what’s already there. It makes me die a little inside seeing my second home in such shape.

  4. What’s the point of getting upset?! I rather have Nintendo take forever than having an incomplete game… I know you guys are dying for a release buy rest assured the game will be out this year

    1. yeah thumbs up for you i was acctually anticipating this game somewhere late 2015 or early 2016 but people really like to complain thats all – This Is Gamer, Peeace Out

        1. either way is gonna come out this year… That’s all I’m saying … We got Mario Kart 8 coming out next month so I’ll be playing that game for a long time ;)

    2. As much as I want the game RIGHT NOW, and as much as Wii U needs the Smash Bros name supporting it RIGHT NOW, I actually hope for the game’s sake that it’s delayed another year. We only get one Smash a generation, Sakurai says there are no plans for dlc (which rules out post-release character tweaks), and that poor hardcore Melee crowd has been waiting far too long already to lay their weary copies of Melee to rest. Brawl took six years (or thereabouts) to develop, and we got a chasm in capability between Meta Knight and Ganondorf. From what I understand, Smash 4 has only been in the works since Sakurai finished Kid Icarus: Uprising. Even with Namco helping him this time, we need all the time we can get, and so for once, I strongly hope I hear a “Please understand” again.

    1. I think I was patient enough buying my WiiU at launch, having nearly all my launch-window games delayed, then waiting a year for a meager library of games. I’m more patient than the 3rd party developers who lost hope that Nintendo was going to grow it’s install base.

That said, I WOULD rather have a great game than a rushed game, I’m just done being patient with Nintendo always being behind and beating me half to death with a disappointment stick.

Hopefully Mario Kart will help turn things around. It has one thing Pikmin, Nintendoland, SMW, and 101 didn’t have. Online multiplayer. Had HALF their other games had online, Nintendo would have been much better off.

      1. Just wait after the direct to start talking about these things. Knowing the date of the game doesn’t make it come out any sooner

        1. Yeah, I’m mostly leaking resentment. I’m not overly pissed Smash could get delayed. And like you said, best to watch the direct before drawing conclusions.

          1. The reason delay hits smash hard was that brawl was delayed many times, due to adding online. subspace, adjusting balance and many other things. Sakurai was unaware of brawls development i belive and he was called in to help development. Sakurai is man who works morning till morning ( he did that during Kid icarus, and melee) I have faith in him most out of tons of people at nintendo

  5. Okay. Is every fucking idiot here THAT impatient and unaware to realize that this is expected because the game is not even close to being finished yet? Oh but they’re more concerned and mad about one fucking game’s release date and the way Nintendo is not releasing details too soon like a smart company should do in case something happens with the production but not concerned about the well being of the creator who’s personally coding the game with a fucking wrist injury/condition.

I swear you people are obviously a bunch of no lives worrying about one damn game when there’s something called “social life” where you should go outside, explore the world, interact with people and such while you wait for a hyped product.

Jesus Christ humanity is such a fucking joke today. XC

    1. You’re complaining about people having no lives when you’re the one typing out an essay on a Nintendo news website complaining about it. There’s something called “social life” where you should go outside, explore the world, interact with people.

      1. In addition, I’m sitting in a very boring business meeting. So I actually have a life (and a job) but I’m a multi-Tasker!

    2. RAWR!!!!
At least I give people a heads up in my Avatar. “Jaded Dry Bones” – what kind of comments do you expect? :D

  6. i doubt itll be released 2015. why would they show off a smash direct so early then? some fans go too crazy chill out. nintendo would really be stupid to put this game out im 2015 when they know all they have is mario kart that will sell. everything else thats announced for wii u so far has a chance of flopping hard

    1. True, and it’s been in development since Kid Icarus Uprising was released, and they have help with development by Namco. Maybe it could get delayed, but they would be out of their minds to release it after 2014.

  7. So they do a Nintendo Direct special Smash Bros… and don’t reveal the release date…
    Uugh… Nintendo… -_-

  8. We all know that Nintendo can’t keep a date when it comes to releases.
Unleashing smash Bros to the world in the summer is what the Wii U needs. Can’t think of any other major releases due out aside from Mario Kart and that scares me!

  9. The longer they put it off, the more the Wii U drops into obscurity. Relying on two big games (MK8 and Smash) isn’t enough to save the console. With this, their announcement about the rumored “Fusion”, and their lack of marketing, Nintendo continues to lose focus. Some major changes are needed, and it’s depressing that we aren’t seeing these changes happen.

  10. So basically they are just going to confirm what we already knew…holiday 2014. Most people thought that the release date was one of the major talking points. If they don’t talk about the single player and online capabilities of this game, then I honestly don’t see the point to this direct. If they are just going to reveal characters and stages, Sakurai could just do that periodically like he has been doing on the smash bros site.

  13. Why do I get the immediate feeling the Wii U version will probably get pushed to early 2015.. Hope it ain’t so.

So many people predicted they would say winter and look what happens o.O
