Mario Kart 8 Nintendo Direct Revs Up In Surprise (Video)

Nintendo has surprised the Karting nation by uploading a Mario Kart 8 Direct today. Along with the full direct – which you can see above – the publisher has made a number of announcements, as well as shown a brand new features trailer. For those who are a little short on time, Nintendo have provided us with all the news in a handy press release below. Make sure you get into gear as Mario Kart 8 revs onto the Wii U in just one month’s time.

Mario Kart 8 Wii U Bundle

  • People who don’t yet own a Wii U system will find it easy to get in on the action. On May 30 Nintendo is releasing the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Set bundle that includes a Wii U Deluxe Set system, a Mario Kart 8 game, a red Mario Wii Wheel accessory and a red Mario Wii Remote Plus controller, all at a suggested retail price of just $329.99.

Get a Free Digital Game

  • People who buy Mario Kart 8 and register the game with Club Nintendo before July 31 will receive a free Nintendo eShop download code for an additional Wii U game. Players can grow their Wii U digital game collections by choosing from one of these well-received Wii U games: New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or Wii Party U. That’s a two-for-one deal featuring some of the all-time great Wii U games. This offer also applies to people who get the game in the Mario Kart 8 bundle or digitally in the Nintendo eShop.

Online Multiplayer

  • Up to 12 players can race together online in four different multiplayer modes, as long as everyone has a broadband Internet connection. Like to trash-talk your friends while you’re preparing for a race? You’re in luck! Mario Kart 8 lets players chat with one another in the lobby area using the Wii U GamePad microphone or text phrases as they wait for their friends to join. Players also can create public or private tournaments for which they specify the day of the week, the time and the rules. Per tradition, players will be able to race against ghost data from friends or even the top 10 worldwide racers. They can try to beat them or just pick up a few tips and tricks from studying the best. If you beat the development team’s ghosts, you’ll get cool stamps for use in Miiverse posts.

Mario Kart TV

  • As previously announced, players can watch their highlight racing reels, rewind them, play them in slow motion or upload them to Miiverse. They can watch the world’s most popular highlight reels and comment on them. But players with Google accounts can also upload their reels directly to their YouTube channels.

New Items

  • Items are what make Mario Kart games so balanced. No matter how skilled racers are, they’re just a blue Spiny Shell away from disaster. A well-timed item can also turn defeat into victory in an instant. The new Super Horn blows away all other items – literally. Sounding the Super Horn issues forth a sonic shock wave that blasts away everything in the vicinity, including other drivers, Red Shells and even blue Spiny Shells. It’s a potent asset, especially for drivers trying to maintain their lead. Mario Kart 8 also introduces the Crazy Eight, a swirl of eight different items that lucky players can use one by one.

New Racers

  • Two new playable female characters make their debut appearances in Mario Kart 8. New heavyweight driver Pink Gold Peach glows with a golden light and makes a nice counterpart to Metal Mario. Baby Rosalina shows up for a play date with other Baby characters. As in past Mario Kartgames, players can again choose to play as their Mii characters, which rounds out the field of racers to an even 30.

      1. *Drinks coffee then spits out* o .O my god these are huge bombs being dropped evasive menuver 12 !!!!!! Little big planet racing 2 for the ps4 coming may 29!!!!

    1. No one cares whether you’re buying it or not, cheapskate. Go buy a gimped $500 gimped PC, or a $400 brick with no games

  1. The free game deal is no use to someone like me who prefers physical copies.

Also, gold peach really? Where the hell is King Boo?

    1. No one cares about your 1st world problems. And it’s only no use to you, do to some weird OCD issue YOU HAVE. Go see a shrink D bag.

  2. Nintendo Or Nothing!

As Mr. T would say, “I pity the fool who buys the digital download instead of that nice, red-cased physical copy”!

    1. I disagree, being able to start mario kart without a disc is worth it, as I will be playing it a lot(but not exclusively). I just don’t like the fact that if my wii u breaks I’d lose all my downloaded games :/

      1. False, my Wii U was STOLEN (house robbery), Nintendo credited me $200 to the eShop, along with restoring downloaded licenses for NSMB U, Nano Assault Neo, Little Inferno and few others

    2. As someone who has a 2yr old and another on the way, digital copies are a life saver. Not only does it prevent grubby little fingers from damaging or destroying the discs, but if they’re napping on me I can easily start play and switch games fro the the gamepad. I also grab as many digital copies as I can on my 360 for the same reason.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

The advantage is though that yo ucan trade it if you get bored of it completely and you would still have the game if your console stops working…

To me there is a little more advantage towards physical copies than digital…

    3. For a game I know I’ll keep like a Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, etc., I like the digital version. My kids play a lot of Disney Infinity, so it’s nice to just leave the disc for that in while still being able to switch the games I want to play. I’m almost annoyed now when I have to get up and physically change a game. On the flipside, Best Buy had Assassin’s Creed 4 for $14 last week. I’ll probably play through it once and sell it which is hard to do with digital versions.

      1. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

I’m going digital when it comes to anything Mario Kart, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid now. I’ve already started this trend with Ocarina of Time 3D & Wind Waker HD. If any future Mario Kart, Zelda, or Metroid games come out with a nice bonus for a retail copy, I’ll buy the retail for the bonus & give the game to my brother for his Wii U since I’ll be going digital, anyway.

    4. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

With a game like Mario Kart that I know I won’t get bored of & I know I won’t get another entry in the series til the next console or handheld, I’ll gladly go digital. After all, it’s not like another Mario Kart is going to come out the next year for the same system. *coughs*CallofDuty*coughs* But that red case does look nice.

    1. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

Matter of opinion. Some people are screaming about Rosalina being a wasted character slot for Smash Bros 4, but I’m looking forward to using her in the game when it releases.

  3. Get a Free Digital Game Get a Free Digital Game Get a Free Digital Game Get a Free Digital Game Get a Free Digital Game
OMG NINTENDO, YES! Good for me that only buy digital games!

  4. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Considering we got this surprise ND out of nowhere, imagine the surprises at E3 ahahahahahhahahahahah…

    The Xbots are doomed!

  5. Nintendo Or Nothing!

Would it kill Nintendo to make a freakin’ RED Wii U console? I can’t believe that even in this bundle, they’re sticking with the ultra dull, boring, black console. And if that free game was a physical retail copy, I’d be excited. I’d just sell the stupid download. Digital games are SO pathetic.

    1. Nah. Red sucks. There’s already enough of it to go around. BLACK is the sexiest color ever for any console. If anything, they need to make a blue Wii U since that’s it’s main color anyway.. :3

    2. 1. Who cares what color it is. No one sees it but you.
      2. The color doesn’t change the console.
      3. It costs a hell of a lot of money to come out with different colored consoles – and the Wii U isn’t selling enough, not even close, to justify such a small change vs. the cost.

I like how you are calling the game, since it’s digital, pathetic – yet it’s free.

You sound like THE biggest d bag.

      1. Nintendo Or Nothing!

Any collector like myself is naturally going to think that digital games are pathetic. I have all 10 of those “Ambassador Program” games on my 3DS, but I never play any of them. I could easily delete them and never miss them. Nothing compares to physical copies.

The absolute ONLY bad thing about physical copies is when you get too many, and you run out of storage space. My bedroom (and part of the house) looks like a storage. Boxes and boxes of games, accessories and swag. But that’s what I love.

Only thing that bugs me is not being able to display it all like it deserves. I don’t mean to come off sounding like an ass when putting down digital games. I just don’t see the point in them. I feel they’re only for the casual gamers.

        1. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

Are you sure you’re not a hoarder? If half of your house looks like a storage unit, it sounds more like hoarding than collecting. I could be wrong, though. Maybe your house is a hell of a lot bigger than I’m thinking it is.

  6. Whoa… Wait. Somebody please tell me I’m reading this right. So you get a Deluxe set with a copy of Mario Kart 8, a red Mario Wii Wheel, and a Red Wiimote? THEN you can get a FULL digital game? FOR $330? What… the holy fuck? Ok, I’m preordering this game before it sells out. ._. Fuck that. XD

    1. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

Don’t forget the money you get back for getting the digital game that you can eventually permanently transfer to your eShop once you get up to 15 bucks, if I recall that being the max amount you need before being able to transfer it right. But I don’t know how it works with a game you get for free.

  7. So are there no more character slots left? :C ( the leak only had 2 left) No Dry Bones or King Boo? Don’t tell me the roster will be as bad as MK7’s….

  8. Nintendo Or Nothing!

No secret, unlockable characters? Either this game don’t have any, or Nintendo is actually keeping it a secret for once.

Did anyone else almost feel as if they was watching an infomerrcial a few times during this direct? And what’s up with the women who was talking in this? They sounded like they were getting aroused as they talked.

There was so many more things I thought of saying while watching this. But I can’t think of anything. Except one thing……I hope this game doesn’t cause me to feel motion-sick. Every time I buy a new Mario Kart game, I get motion sick from time to time.

  9. Ahh fuck. :( I just realized in order to get a free digital game you have to have the bundle or download it digitally… Damn it. What to do? Pre order or download to 2tb hard drive? Arrghh.

    1. How? There’s a code in every Nintendo own game. Meaning once you open the game case, the code will be inside. I persume any retail copy will have one not only the bundle, preorder, or digital. It is from may to july31st. in other words you just need to buy it and it will have it.

    2. No you can get the physical copy of game itself and still get the free game.

“This offer also applies to people who get the game in the Mario Kart 8 bundle or digitally in the Nintendo eShop.”

They stated that it “ALSO” applies to those who get the bundle or get the game digitally.

      1. Yuh huh. I was asking a question. I already know now. You register it using the Club Nintendo code inside and get a free digital game for my 2TB hard drive. :)

  10. No Dry Bones or King boo?….. People just deal with it. i really liked dry bones but if he its not there then its not there. We could get them on some DLC in the future. who know.

      1. Actually, it kinda makes sense.
Would you want to listen to little kids cursing you every time you let a shell fly up their tail-pipes mid-race?

Then there’s the idiots who would purposely leave their music playing while the race is going, and since we don’t know how good Nintendo’s chat functions would work with this kind of game, it’s fair to speculate that they wouldn’t have an individual mute button for specific players.

At least this way, you don’t get distracted by those kinds of players, and can do your trash talking with them after the race is done and over with, or beforehand if that’s your style.
And it’s far better than not including it at all.

        1. If there are people I don’t want to hear, then I would put them on mute, individually, like every other normal game that has online multiplayer with voice chat.

This has been a standard for years now. Having voice chat with individual mute/ignore functions.

90% of the time, I game with my friends, who – yes, I would like to hear while I’m playing.

  11. well I don’t know what to think about that Nintendo direct. Firstly the game is great and I really can’t wait to play. Now I really wonder if I have to buy it one day one. That was the good.

Now the bad what’s going on with those retarded voices honestly that was f***ing cheesy and lame. TBH i wanted to hit that b***** just for him to shut up. Honestly I hope that any ads coming to Europe are no near as bad as that one… it’s just horrible.

The potential supa duppa disappointment, the offer with Mario kart, the free digital content is it just for North America? As so many knows by now in UK we need that bloody promotion to sell more Wii U. Again hope Nintendo will roll out this promotion in Europe cause that will be the end of them in Europe.

      1. well I hope not, free digital copy (i want NSMWII)!!!!! I don’t care about the bundle but a lot of people may.

If what you say come true that will be the classic example where Nintendo put a good offering in NA but not in Europe then everybody wonder why Nintendo does not sell as they expected in Europe.

Go no further here the answer!!!! rant over :-)

      2. sorry did I say rant over… just double check the US and EU bundle so far my understanding is:
        EU=
        – Black premium console
        – Mario Kart 8 with no free digital copy
        – a blue shell trophy
        – Price £250 on Amazon UK which one of the cheapest

        NA=
        – Black premium console
        – Mario Kart 8 with a free digital copy
        – A wheel (red one)
        – Wii remote plus controller – Mario edition
        – price is $360 +20% tax (average) , which is $432 /£260 and that average

Now tell me if I wanted to buy a wii U and I see that. I will be gutted and think Nintendo taking the mick. Again no fan of MS but at least they got they marketing right and fair across the globe. In my wildest dream I hope someone from Nintendo Europe/UK read that blog and take note.

          1. I already bought my Wii U and live in EU, furthermore I go to Canada quiet often and could have had this bundle but it would have been pointless to have a NA version.

additionally I could have had one in December when I was in Hong Kong for a very good price but again that would be pointless to buy one. I am not gutted I already have my Wii U. Even more so now I see the Mario kart 8 bundle for EU.

My point is that Nintendo privilege one region over others and then it’s no wonder why the Wii U don’t sells much in EU especially in UK. Saying that you can see why Nintendo wants to keep the region lock thing. I don’t care what the others say in EU we always been screwed over by Nintendo since the SNES (Super famicom) area when it comes to games or special offers. That mario bundle thing just makes my case….

            1. Well he did say “If you buy Mario kart before on the day May 30 to June 31, you can get a free download game with your purchase”. He didn’t say anything about you buying the bundle, just the game. So again you can ask someone to buy it for you with the right amount. Not only that but your also getting a discount if you buy Super Mario Kart and go digital too? That’s a pretty dam good deal.

              1. The digital free game which I first thought was for NA is also for EU is a very good deal indeed, and I do believe i expressed my relief we have this deal in EU.

My point again is from the point of view of the buyer from EU who get a shitty deal with Mario Kart bundle compare to NA.

            2. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

You do know the United States gets screwed out of good stuff, too, every once & awhile, right? While Australia got that awesome black 3DS with the gold Zelda stuff on it for an Ocarina of Time 3D & 3DS bundle, we didn’t get it. Then when Link Between Worlds comes out, we get the less cool looking 3DS with black bottom & gold top with a gold Triforce on the gold top & a black Triforce on the black bottom when the Triforces’ colors should have been reversed. In the end, every country gets something better than the others every now & then, so it’s pointless, and a bit self-entitled, to cry about not getting the better deal. But I’d rather people complain & begrudgingly buy the game/console then do a big disservice to the company & not buy the game/console at all. And no point saying “but this company is giving me this & that” when each company is different in how they reward people for buying their stuff. Anyway, I won’t be bothered if you want to disagree with my point, since you are still welcome to your opinion no matter how selfish it might sound. After all, I’m still a little mad Australia got the better Zelda 3DS than we in the States did. So I can’t fully blame you for getting mad.

              1. oh man if I have to state every good deal you guys in US had and we did not get, which games (let start from SNES area) we never ever see in our territory I can write a 400 pages book on that one :-P. I found a bit rich when you say I am being selfish. How many people in US moan about xenoblade chronicle not being release in US? I am just a savy customer. Anyway thank for your comment even if I disagree with you and let’s agree to disagree on that one :-).

  12. Like the free digital game thing. But since I already have nsmbu and wind waker HD, and since I’m a collector and will only buy Pikmin 3 in packaged form. Looks like it’s Wii Party U. Only if it doesn’t take up a lot if storage space.

    1. XDD WOW! NOW YOU TROLLS CAN’T EVEN COME UP WITH EXCUSES! You know Nintendomination is among us now. All you can say is “game sucks”. IT’S NOT EVEN OUT! XD Wow, I can just imagine after E3 what you say…

    2. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

Whatever you say, dude. Now enjoy whatever racing game your system is getting while I go & wait for Mario Kart 8 to release which I will find just as fun as any racing game you might like.

  14. Looks like this is going to be excellent, but that’s not a surprise to us is it. Also for some reason Mario Kart is always light years ahead of everything else at Nintendo with regards to online functionality – that was the case on DS, Wii and 3DS too. The rest of Nintendo need to get their act together!

Also, to those who are complaining about the way it was presented, did you miss the fact that it’s over-the-top nature was completely intentional and a joke?

    1. That’s exactly what I was thinking. The infomercial portion was amusing, making fun. I found it way funnier than that Reggie bot thing

    2. one word: retarded,

it works maybe in US/NA not for some countries I know (UK, France,Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and Spain….. no Spain they like cheese ads). Put the share the link and it was unanimous.. they hate the voices.

        1. what a comeback!!!!!!! well done mate Obviously insulting people is way easier than having a proper discussion no wandering why Nintendo fans like you give a bad rep.

One friendly advice, If you don’t like what I say just leave and don’t read the comments especially the ones you don’t like :-)

  15. Pingback: Don’t Forget If You Buy Mario Kart 8 At Retail Or eShop You Can Get A Free Wii U Game | My Nintendo News

  16. In Europe when you buy the game physically or digitally you can download one of the following games for free: Nintendo Land, NSMBU, Game & Wario, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, Sonic Lost World, Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympics, Wii Party U, Wonderful 101 or Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

  17. The only digital game offer I can accept is Wii Party U, because I already own the other 3. :/ I never planned on getting Wii Party U, but it looks like I’m getting it now..

    Wish they offered DKCTF…

  18. I was planning to buy MH3U, bit now i’ll buy MK8 and get MH3U for free! :’)
PD: Crazy eight, like the man in Breaking Bad xD

  21. This presented some awesome info about the game. But I have to ask. How much longer are they gonna wait before FINALLY telling us about Battle Mode?!? It’s not a mario kart game without battle mode.

  22. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Can someone tell me if this Direct showed the new Rainbow Road? I don’t want to see it, but I also want to watch the video. If it IS shown, could you tell me when to skip ahead?

  23. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Can someone tell me if the NEW Rainbow Road is in this video? I don’t want to see it until I play the game, so if it’s in the video, could someone tell me when to skip ahead so I don’t see it? Thanks!

  25. How dare anyone speak negatively of this. This is what we’ve been wanting. You lot are some of the worst I’ve ever seen.

  26. Dude, next-gen Mario Kart 8 right year. Glad to see Nintendo keeping up with the modern times on this one, let’s hope they do the same for Smash Bros.

    1. There’s hidden characters but since they are “hidden” characters they would never be announced. You will have to unlock them and see who they are for yourself.

  27. I’m really pleased with this Direct. It was nice to see the bundle announced and hopefully what will boost Wii U sales which is good for everyone. I also like how through Mario Kart TV we can upload footage to our youtube accounts which is a feature I was jealous of PS4/Xbox One owners can do so it’s nice that we have a game that can do that as well. Lastly, I am overly pleased with the Club Nintendo promotion. Looks like I will be getting Wind Waker HD after all.

      1. Ridley Clone XIII: Kalas

He was probably expecting it to be serious. The last couple of directs were serious. I think it’s nice to see one that isn’t trying to take itself seriously. They ARE talking about a Mario game, after all, which is made to appeal to everyone. If you expect Mario stuff to be serious, I think you should steer clear of any Mario related news.
