Nintendo Looked At LittleBigPlanet Before Developing Super Mario Maker

The developers tasked with creating Super Mario Maker for the Wii U have an enormous task ahead of them. Game Informer spoke with Super Mario Maker producer Takashi Tezuka and director Yosuke Oshino about the mammoth project and whether they took inspiration from Sony’s LittleBigPlanet series, which also allows players to create their own levels. The team say that they did look at the title and thought it was well made, but they had their own goals in mind.

We’re familiar with that, but we weren’t really looking at it at the time. We played LittleBigPlanet, and we thought it was really well made, but of course when creating our game we made it according to our concepts and what we wanted. Our ideas are to have a fun creative experience that was intuitive enough for anyone to pick up and play. Yeah, we looked at that game, but we had our own goals in mind.

Thanks, RedRover

  1. My favorite thing about this is that the title says they looked at it, but the first sentence from the source is that they ‘weren’t really looking at it at the time.’

    1. My thoughts exactly. I actually remembered reading the article on GI’s website and thinking to myself “No they didn’t really look at it” after seeing the title here. Reading the excerpt, it’s obvious I was right.

          1. Hey Commander, check saori’s lattest video if you do carefully you should notice two things that expose his favorite activities (hint: two products)

            1. Lmao, idk who this kid is but he has lotion and tissues right next to his computer, lol we all know what he’s been up to…

      1. Read further and you’ll see them say, “We played LittleBigPlanet, and we thought it was really well made,” and “Yeah, we looked at that game, but we had our own goals in mind.”

  2. I bet that if it was Sony looking at a Nintendo game while developing a game, people would accuse them of “stealing” ideas. Can’t wait to see how the comments section on this one is going to turn out, hah.

      1. That doesn’t make it invalid. That means that Nintendo ‘stole’ the concept from the modders and hackers ;)

I agree, Namie. People always jump the gun when it isn’t their favorite company doing the scouting but when it is, it’s considered “awesome”.

          1. Thats not “concept”. That’s design. Nintendo designed the sprites, but by your logic they never came up with the concept, the idea its self. So yes, that is Nintendo conducting/building on a stolen concept… And dont misquote me.

            1. You would say they stole the concept but you shouldn’t condone the hackers stealing their design which all above they’re doing was illegal. Now Nintendo gives people the means to make a game/level themselves without risking to download and mod their copyrighted IP.

              1. I think you need a rest man. You’re putting words in my mouth to fit your argument, and to some degree you’re arguing with yourself, or rather with your own words. I’m not the one in the first place who wrote that they stole the concept, rather that would be you. I just put your implied idea into words; or the contra-positive of what you were writing.

“The Mario Maker idea was conceived and done by modders and hackers a long time ago.”

“conceived” means it was created by, so you’re writing that they created the concept, not Nintendo. So, in a sense, Nintendo stole the concept.

I don’t know anything about IP laws, but I would think some fan enthusiasts, definitely not all of them at least, would make their own sprites if using Nintendo’s sprites results in them being ‘stolen’. Still, if what you’re stating is true, then that still means Nintendo stole a concept from another party according to your argument, all while attempting to avoid infringement on their own IP?

                1. In all fairness, I’m pretty sure Nintendo would have made this game whether or not LBP/modders have already done it. It’s the kind of game many kids dreamed about in their youths. It was only a matter of time.

        1. Nope, the Empire is actually giving you an accessible set of tools that we use to make 2D Mario games. ( We played LBP because it was a fun game, not for research purposes. We also like Drake )

    1. BTW, have you seen “Battle Royal”? Strictly ripped off Smash Bros. by only removing the off screen elimination gameplay mechanic and turned it into a stamina mode which Smash Bros. already did. Sony took that idea and replicate it without much effort to hide or change it. Same for PSMove mimicking Wii Remote by making it look like a stupid black wand or a dildo with a glowing ball tip. lol Oh and PSVita Pets..Nintendogs with added voice..for dogs…nuff said. XP Sony can’t even inspire or adapt anything right even if their company’s survival depends on it.

      1. I gotta agree, even the Dualshock controllers tooked their ideas from Snes pad, added rumble and 2 sticks, idea that came from N64. Even the handheld homeconsole connectivity was stolen from Nintendo, also PSP/Vita designs are ripped off from normal GBA etc.

Sony´s basic idea has always been pleasuring 3rd parties, because Sony cannot survive with their own merits like Nintendo can. Sony IP´s just arent that great.

I miss the days when Sega made consoles, they actually had own ideas for the most part.

        1. But unfortunately, most of SEGA’s ideas flopped BIG TIME! Like the crappy Sega CD and 32X to name a couple.

          1. Well the only Sega system i ever had was Dreamcast and oh boy it was awesome, sure Sega flopped and its unfortunate, what makes it even more sad is because they had so much potential, many Dreamcast´s innovations are standards today. If only Sega would had survived.

On the bright side Sega´s fall resulted them later on helping developers like PlatinumGames by publishing 5 of their games.

          1. Its not just that they have borrowed stuff from other companies, its that they are now with Shenmue3 borrowing from fans too through the kickstart..

            1. And yes this comment was a joke, in any case if someone wonders, i think its cool that Shenmue fans are finally getting sequel.

        2. The Xbox ripped off the SNES controller of the letters and colored buttons. Dual shock to me didn’t ripped off anything but don’t forget, Sony/Nintendo console was almost a thing until Nintendo backed off because Sony was gonna claim very thing of theirs from part of their partnership deal. So yeah that may have explain why you think that.

As for Sony stealing the portable/home console connectivity, you also forgot that Sega did the same during their console days so I wouldn’t mind Sony do it anyway because they pale in comparison to Nintendo. PSP and Vita both failed to beat Nintendo’s handhelds no matter how powerful they were. They lack the most vital ingredient: the games.

        3. Also one more thing I forgot to mention. Sony couldn’t survive without third parties? Well, look at Nintendo now. Same sad story but Sony can still holds up their own with their IPs which are good plus they’re actually wise to deliver both worlds into one console which is what Nintendo is suppose to do now but failed.

      2. I seriously wonder what of the “I won’t bother replying to any of your comments anymore” you didn’t understand. But seeing how you’ve kept responding to me in the past weeks, and still do, I’ll just go ahead and repeat myself one last time: I won’t bother replying to any of your comments anymore, you can stop trying; I just don’t think you’re a person it’s possible to have a decent conversation with, or even stay on topic without you bringing up entirely unrelated things.

          1. Touché. :)
But this time it’s a whole different story, really. I mean, I can have nice conversations with you, even if we sometimes don’t agree with each other’s opinions, right? Unfortunately, that can’t be said about everyone here, so I simply don’t want to waste my time on those individuals.

      3. “Strictly ripped off Smash Bros. by only removing the off screen elimination gameplay mechanic and turned it into a stamina mode which Smash Bros. ”

It did rip it off, but it plays nothing like stamina mode.

  3. I remember how hyped i was about LBP when i got it, then i was highly dissapointed how dull and slow paced the core platforming gameplay was, whats the fun of creating levels when the game itself is so slow paced. Its one of those typical “artistical” Sony IP´s that is dull with neat concept, even the generic NSMB games are more fun to play.

    1. Dark Side Games Inc

I thought the game was fun, up until LBP 3… that game was a huge disappointment for me.

I actually like the very peaceful and slower paced games because you need something to off-set the games like Battlefield or Call of Duty.

      1. I guess it was wrong from me to expect LBP to play like Mario/Sonic, it just felt so….clunky, i dunno havent played it in a long long time, maybe its time to give it another shot?

Sony should consider making The Legend Of Dragoon 2, TLOD is one of the very few Sony Ip´s that i actually like.

        1. People did the same thing with PS All Stars. They went in expecting it to be like SSB and were pissed off when it played nothing like it. The only similarities came from the fact that first and third party characters were fighting and some platforming was involved.

Never go into a game expecting it to play like something it isn’t. That will almost always set you up for disappointment.

          1. StupidPeopleAreStupid

People were disappointed with PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale because it was utter wank, not because they “expecting it to be like SSB”.

    1. Dark Side Games Inc

PS4 LBP3 is actually a disappointment to be honest, though I’d recommend MM’s new game Dreams, that game looks awesome :D

      1. Yeh I heard it wasn’t the best, bugs and that too but yeh, Dreams is a brilliant concept. Stuff like LBP, Dreams, Minecraft are great because it lets the player take control I guess and lets everyone be as creative as they want just like with Super Mario Maker in September too! The more creative games, the better! :D

        1. I would say LBP 3 is the second best LBP game behind LBP PS Vita. I only encountered one bug in the game and I had it from launch.

The new characters and gameplay mechanics, the music, awesome new levels – even the narrative made it such a delight to play.

  4. What, Nintendo actually looked into something while working on something in R&D? Now do the same thing while NX is R&D to avoid the same mistake with Wii U.

  5. you could ask that about every game where you can create things… did you guys look at lego creator did you guys looks at rollercoaster tycoon? did you guys look at …

  6. LBP is good, but the level creation tool is hardly intuitive or easy to use.
Mario Maker is going to be better just by virtue of having a tactile interface.

    1. It’s quite intuitive but not that easy to use. There’s a large learning curve. I appreciate the tutorial in the form of games that were introduced with LBP 3.

Still looking forward to trying Mario Maker though. I agree, the gamepad will make it much easier to make levels.

      1. Little big planet is one of those rare examples of Sony being creative. Microsoft however, I haven’t found any examples so far.

          1. Nintendo Dark Jester Kooweek

//Besides Halo & maybe Gears, none of these example were made by Moneybags themselves

  7. Pwned. Nintendo missed out on Media Molecule, Mother Sony beat them to the punch, and now they reap what they sow.

I’m sure they looked at a lot of these “build your own 2D platoformer games” while making Super Mario Maker. It makes sense to see what others have done before venturing into this specific market. Super Mario Maker is, of course, not breaking new ground in regards to giving players free range with creating their own platforming courses.

It’s only really special, because it is “Mario,” but hey, that’s the advantage to owning the most successful longstanding video game franchise in history.

//The major fact in this editor is the easy “combine things” feature, in any editor you’d have to edit the item values to come to points that Mario maker does have

  11. LittleBigPlanet is a great example of what Mario Maker should be. It’s a really well done level maker, though probably a lot more elaborate than Mario Maker is going to be, and has a great online community setup. Hopefully Nintendo took notes on some of those things, they’ve never been too great about online communities. LBP is still supported and levels are featured and staff favorited and such, hopefully Nintendo is active in the community for it too.
