Nintendo 3DS: 3D Is Actually Optional With The Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo have revealed that the 3D functionality of the Nintendo 3DS can actually be disabled if the user wants to play a certain game but doesn’t wish for it to display the stereoscopic 3D effect.

The 3DS, as it’s called, will have the unique capability of offering stereoscopic 3D, an effect not unlike what’s being employed in films like Avatar and How to Train your Dragon, but without the need for glasses. But if you don’t want to use it, it’s a feature that can be deactivated.

  1. Oh that’s really good. A part of me worried how that would affect playing older DS games if at all, but since it can be turned off, there really isn’t anything to worry about.

    1. If by that you mean you are wondering if you will be able to 3DS games on a DSi, I would have to think the answer to that would be no. 3DS games will be more powerful than the DSi specs would allow for and I’d have to think NIntendo will probably use a different cartridge type for 3DS games. I can’t be positive on the latter, but I know they did patent a new cartridge type, so I’d have to think that would be for 3DS games.

  2. I was hoping the 3D enviornment would add more depth to gameplay (ie: examining a room in 3D to find something), but I guess not

  3. Probably not. I’m sure that the cartridges will be different.

I think that the ability to turn the 3D on/off could be an interesting approach to games. Perhaps something is hidden, but it can only be found while the 3D is on, or perhaps the other way around. Just imagine the implications in a Zelda game!

    1. No. The games would have to be originally made for 3D for it to work. I guess in theory a game could be updated to show 3D like what is going to happen to some Playstation 3 games, but I don’t see the likelihood. I hope developers won’t start re-releasing some of their hit titles for the original DS in 3D at full price. That wouldn’t be cool -_-

    1. I’m presuming that all games designed and developed for the Nintendo 3DS will be 3D (with the option to disable the 3D feature) I doubt you will have two separate copy’s of the games on store shelves with a 2D edition or a 3D edition. Although anything is possible….
