Nintendo 3DS: Satoru Iwata Comments On Nintendo 3DS Pricing

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has spoken honestly to online gaming publications about the price point for the 3DS.

Whilst Nintendo have yet to give a specific price point or release date for the 3DS,  Iwata did confirm that the technology residing within the machine inevitably costs more to produce than the technology powering the DSi.

“I have to refrain from talking specifically about the price point. What I can confirm is that, in terms of the production costs, it will cost more than the costs for the Nintendo DS today. Having said that, we believe we will produce enough value worthy of the production cost. We do not think we have to sell the products below cost.”

  1. I wonder if he meant the DS he meant. Anyway I hope it doesn’t cost too much more then the DSi XL.

  2. I would like to hope with the amount of profit they are making from the Wii and DS at the moment that they would subsidise the 3DS somewhat but i dunno. If the 3DS is too expensive at launch i think ill leave it a year before i get it despite how much i want it

  3. I really don’t see them asking more for the 3DS than they are asking for the Wii. I hope that doesn’t happen.

  4. @JDE – yeah, I see it being somewhere around a Wii, considering it’s power and appeal. Ninty knows people will buy it, so they don’t have to underprice it, like Sony did with PS3.

  5. Yes, I will too, but the price will determine if I get it immediately after release. I’ll probably end up waiting a little while, unfortunately.

  6. Ugh i already knew it would cost more than the dsi dang it Nintendo at least give an estimate

  7. Seeing as a DSi already costs $189 for 11 bucks more you can get yourself a Wii, I wouldn’t expect 3DS to be too tremendously expensive. If a handheld actually ended up costing more than a home console… I just can’t imagine that.

I like that price range and was around what I was thinking for the minium ($249.99 to $299.99). I don’t think it’s the system itself that will be the problem price wise, it’s how many games you want at launch….especailly if they cost anything over $29.99.

  9. @JDE – yeah, but remember, Ninty doesn’t do price cuts like Sony does. If you plan on waiting for a 3DS price drop, it’ll take 1-2 years. :/

@SWIFT – I can see the games costing $40-50. (In Canada, the cornerstone games for DS, like Mario and Zelda, already cost $40)

  10. @mario64mario – Well, I’ll either have to wait until I can afford it, or till Christmas / Birthday, whichever comes first, lol.

@SWIFT – Yeah, the most expensive DS games I’ve seen around here are $35. Actually, those that include a pack-in, like HeartGold / SoulSilver are probably a little higher. I’ve never really looked.

  11. They probably won’t break the $200 line. Just look at the huge screens and functions of an XL and that’s only $190. Plus a regular DSi is waaay lower.
