Nintendo 3DS: Sony Says Nintendo Shouldn’t Bash 3D Glasses

Sony’s president of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has told online gaming publication IGN that Nintendo need to stop dismissing 3D glasses.

Shuedi Yoshidu clearly feels as though he’s been 1up’d by Nintendo after the Japanese gaming company showcased the 3DS at E3 and reiterated their “no more glasses” message for 3D gaming.

“I have hope that they have a broader perspective with 3D,” Yoshida said. “When you listen to what they are saying about the effect of 3D perspective to the games, they are saying the same message we are, but they don’t have to bash some small part of what the other company is doing.”

Yoshida later said the industry should advocate 3D development, and that Sony would like to work alongside Nintendo in promoting the new technology.

“I think as an industry we should preach this new perspective, from a very large cinema screen to a small portable, because that helps advancing the games and the game industry,” he said. “We’d like to work together to promote 3D.”

At the time, Yoshida admitted he hadn’t actually played the 3DS yet, but said the glasses technology is improving all the time and that of course they’ll be required for movie-like experiences.

“If you really want a big theater experience, of course you have to wear glasses,” he said. “With the latest technology, the glasses are light and you kind of forget you’re wearing them after awhile.”

  1. I personally won’t buy a 3D TV for another year or two so by then maybe they will take the hint and find a way to make larger screens 3D without glasses.

  2. uh, didn’t somebody at sony bash nintendo and the wii for being childish? if you make fun of something don’t expect not to be made fun of back

  3. in the “marcus” ad campaign sony are pretty much bashing on nintendos DS for not being as hard-core as the PSP

    the irony…

    1. yeah and also in the commercial where they indirectly call out microsoft and nintendo from being too “kiddy” with their motion gaming. those hypocritical bastards

  4. I’m not a big fan of having to wear glasses to watch a movie (or in my case a second pair which are bad enough alone)
For this reason I’m looking forward to the 3DS I really hope it lives up to the hype and gets proper 3rd party support and not the shovelware that sadly the wii has amassed

  5. lol only reason he wants to work with Nintendo on promoting the 3D and the 3DS is because he knows this is gonna be a bigger hit than his own PSP Go

  6. intergalactic potato

    Alright, here we go.

”I have hope that they have a broader perspective with 3D,” – Nintendo has a broader perspective with 3D, that is why the 3DS doesn’t need glasses.

“but they don’t have to bash some small part of what the other company is doing” – Nintendo can bash you all they want. Wussy.

“We’d like to work together to promote 3D.” – NEVER going to happen, not after the way you bashed them.

“At the time, Yoshida admitted he hadn’t actually played the 3DS yet” – Just plain fail.

“you kind of forget you’re wearing them after awhile.” – Until your friend tells you how stupid you look.

  7. he needs to shut up. nintendo needs to stop bashing sony my butt, they bash nintendo all the time, then they ussally rip-off nintendo’s idea, THAT they were bashing in the first place. they need to shut up, if you can’t take what you dish out, then don’t start it in the first place.

    1. I Know How Yui Feel :|

don’t worry im pretty sure in The Future Theyl be Contacts That Let Everyone see 3D :D

  8. Shut up, Sony. You’re the one that steals Nintendo’s ideas and bashes them, so of course they’re going to 1-up you. (Oh God, what a bad pun.) You just need to accept the fact that they’re better than you.

  9. Actually, this Sony guy fits the profile of what I’m currently seeing between Sony and Nintendo, with regards to the 3DS.

“We’d like to work together to promote 3D.”

Just look at one of the Nintendo-promoted games for the 3DS:

-METAL GEAR SOLID SNAKE EATER 3D

We haven’t had a MGS game on a portable Nintendo system since “Metal Gear Solid” for Gameboy Colour.

  10. Once again Sony has been topped by Nintendo, and once again they first laugh at it (remember they said the Wii was a gimmick and later the 3Ds wasn’t going to work very well), but once again they were proved wrong and once again are sorry. Sony is now copying Nintendo’s motion controls, and now they want to “work together” with 3d. Just accept it, Sony, you can’t beat Nintendo

  11. Oh… My… God…

So, after all the bashing you’ve done to Nintendo, they can’t bash you for anything?

Really, what a load of bull****, they’d like to promote 3D technology together? Hahahaha, they just don’t know how to make 3D without glasses, or a 3D console which doesn’t suck, Sony knows that Nintendo’s 3DS will surpass by a lot his PSP Go.

Logically, Nintendo has a wider perspective of 3D than Sony, since they achieved it without glasses.

And lastly, I really don’t care whether I am or am not using glasses, but I really DO care if I have to pay a freaking 100$ to use them! Besides, playing without glasses is a next step in technology, so bash Nintendo all you want Sony, but they’ve got the Classics, they’ve got the best and original hardware, and they’re waaay ahead of you. For example, while Nintendo has had the Wii with Motion Control for over 3 years, Sony has copied it now, in 2010, with devices that look like dildos.

Sony’s sales have been going down and they certainly will continue dropping until they come up with something original and which doesn’t cost thousands of dollars.

    Who agrees with me? :D

  12. (really sorry for the triple post, Sickr )

    @ Yusei Fudo –

“Logically, Nintendo has a wider perspective of 3D than Sony, since they achieved it without glasses.”

Actually, Nintendo didn’t start that technology, it’s been around for a while, so Nintendo’s not ahead of Sony.

“Sony has copied it now, in 2010”

Don’t forget Microsoft! We all know Bill Gates wants to make a quick buck. (A.K.A. Kinect).

  13. SONY IS SCARED, and so is 360!!! There is only so many varied FPS games a console can develop and sale before it becomes like every other FPS in the consoles library. Sony knows that Nintendo is going to rule the Portable Gaming Industry from here on out for the next couple years. The only things that are keeping the XBOX and the PS3 ahead of the Wii are their HD Graphics and their FPS franchises. MS and Sony have realize the success of Nintendo’s solid business plan that has attracted many casual gamers; but they are about 4 years late. Sony’s Move might be successful for Hardcore gamers that want to try motion controls with some solid FPS games like COD. However, no casual gamers will want to shell out over $300 dollars plus Move controls just to play a few games. The Kinect is just a sad attempt by Microsoft and they should just look at making a new console. All Nintendo has to do is release the rumored Wii Hi-Fi with HD graphics, improved motion control, and online community and watch developers port their games to the new Wii HD. Plenty of games ported from the PS3 and 360 to the new Wii would start selling like Fresh bread. Sony wants to work with Nintendo is order to split some of the profit with Nintendo and then stab Nintendo in the back. Also, I don’t think Bill Gates runs Microsoft anymore; he is more focused on running his charity instead and letting Steve Jobs get the spotlight this last couple years.

  15. “No more glasses”.
I hope Nintendo can promise that statement, before they suddenly change their mind on their next console, and follows sony. Doesn’t really see any form of wii3D since on the 3DS you can only se the effect from one angle.

Also, Can still not figure out how you can make 3d without glasses or cross-eyed-technique :S

Whatever sony does with 3d, I won’t buy a 3D TV, yet. Thanks to Kinect, I’m waiting for the television with the statement “No more remote” :)

    1. The screens have ridges inside them that makes the light bounce two different ways for each eye so your brain is registering multiple layers of the image that’s in front of you.

  16. And now Sony makes everyone talk about there 3d-solution aswell. Ah, the irony of viral marketing. All publicity is good publicity, and you are taking the bait. :)
I don´t mind sony taking the costs with putting 3d on the market. I know I like it, but as with HD, 3d is way off in the future.

  17. Glasses-free 3d is the best way to be!
I’d like to see Nintendo work with Hitachi (developers of the Wooo, a glasses-free 3d phone), or Panasonic with whom they worked last-gen for the Q, to make an affordable, glasses-free 3d-TV for their next console.

  18. I think Sony is stupid they copy nintendo and microsoft with everything theyre stupid A holes if you want nintendo to stop criticizing you than stop copying people when nintendo announced the 3DS guess what sony did O and by the PS Move is also gonna have 3D and when wii came out what did sony say O yeah were coming out with motion control STOP COPYING OTHER COMPANYS SONY NINTENDO AND MICROSOFT WILL ALWAYS BE PREFFERED AFTER ALL IF IT WERENT FOR NINTENDO AND MICROSOFT DEVELOPING THE FIRST IN HOME GAMING CONSOLE AND COMPUTERS YOU COULDNT MAKE VIDEO GAMES

  19. What is with people bashing Sony and defending MS. Never has MS been original if so since when? besides there are 3DTVs without wearing glasses

  20. I don’t think Nintendo was bashing Sony at all, to be honest. They’re just reiterating what we already know as fact: those glasses can get clunky sometimes, and overall just uncomfortable to wear if you want to enjoy the experience in front of you. I know people who outright refuse to go to 3D movies because they hate those glasses. The entire thing is gimmicky, really, so I say let the 3D fad run on, until people are sick of it, and move on when it’s over with. There’s little point in promoting it since this already fell through years ago.

  21. Besides Nintendo and Sony are the only ones with more than one worthwhile franchises and more quality and have exclusive titles that arent timed for a year

  22. I think it’s a scam. Sony is a bitch, and they want in on the spex-less 3D world.

Sony needs to shut it’s trap about bashing though. What was that dildo-esque controller they made? Oh yeah! Their own motion controller. Did anyone else see the promotional video? That was bashing Nintendo to kingdom come.

    Sony. Is. A. PUSSY.

  23. Sony and Nintendo are my two favourite gaming manufactures, but I must say Sony is going to start falling behind.
Gone are the days I never touched my DS, I barely go near the PSP.
3DS will revolutionize, however if both promoted 3D together…. well itd certainly result in something quite epic but non the less. Wont happen.

But once again, Nintendo makes the innovation, 4 years latter Sony and Microsoft finally copy.
Before Nintendo make a new awesome idea.
Ie. Took em forever to copy the Wii, second they have Nintendo makes a specs less 3D platform.

Meh, Im getting a 3DS AND a 3D Television anyway.

  24. I really wish people will stop saying how Move is a copy of wii and ms Kinect is eyetoy well they are not copies they are just improved concepts besides sony has had motion stuff since 2001 same w nintendo do anyone remember the gloves and if move was a copy it would use the same thing as a senser bar besides move has it to get the hardcore gamers into motion gaming cus it is fact hardcore titles dont sell well on wii

    1. what about twilight princess? monster hunter tri? not to mention virtual console’s through-the-roof sales and many of those games would be considered “hardcore”. maybe you meant third-party games don’t sell well on the wii

      1. well of course zelda sold its a known great franchise and same for monster hunter tri its known also from its ps2 days and it has become a phenomenom for both fans cant not get them but other hardcore titles dont and 3rd party titles i forgot those too dont sell well thank you

  25. I laugh at these comments because sony ripped off of nintendo the idea of motion control with the playstation move? No. Sony just took nintendos idea and made it greatly better, and the wii truly has no hard-core games for it. I love nintendo but its the sad truth…

    1. Maybe in technological developments in the last few years Move has the edge, but I would be genuinely shocked if they had the games to back it up like Nintendo does, hardcore or not.

    2. Same. So many Sony haters. Nintendo may have been the first to make a console based around motion control but motion control has been in arcades for ages. I don’t really care who did it first I care about who does it best and as of right now! No matter how much you hate it. The PlayStation move is a real 1 to 1 tracking device. In my honest opinion Nintendo has only had pre set waggle controls up untill the resent release of Wii Motion Plus. I don’t see nothing to whine about but I do see what you guys think. “Sony is ripping of Nintendo Wii” At least when Sony does something similar to another company. They do it right the first time! They make it better then their competitors even if it comes out looking like a dildo. Regardless that remote you call a dildo is more high tech and advanced then the Wii remote with Wii Motion Plus. I really wish the design was just a Beta but Im happy for the Move because when I first bought a Wii I thought it was going to have PS3 graphics and 1 to 1 motion control tracking from the start. PlayStation Move is what the Wii remote should have been from the beginning and I cant wait to Play Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition on PS3 with the Wand, Move, whatever whatever in glorious HD! Hate Sony all you want but Microsoft is the greater evil. When they take something from another console they make it worse. (Cough cough) (Mii’s, Channels, Perfect Dark, Banjo Nuts and Balls!) Microsoft was the death of Rare. One of my all time favorite game compannies of all time and with there little Kinect thing which is basically a PS Eye with a lot of promotion behind it. When this thing launches. That might just be the death of motion control period, because this things going to be ugly!
