Nintendo Wii: Reggie Fils-Aime Disappointed With Metroid: Other M Sales

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has expressed his disappointment at sales for the reasonably well received Metroid: Other M for the Nintendo Wii.

“We believe that it could be, should be a million unit title. We’re not going to get there, not through the holiday. And we are doing a lot of thinking as to why. Because it’s a great game. The consumer reaction because of the quality has been strong. We’re doing a lot of thinking about why we didn’t get there. I think the marketing was strong, advertising was very good, the social media we did was very positive. [It’s] getting close to half a million.”

“First off, [I have] nothing but the greatest respect for the development team. Mr. Sakamoto did a wonderful job. His partnership with us in promoting the game was stellar. Team Ninja [is] absolutely fabulous. I’m not going to sit here and criticize a style of the game, but have I read the same feedback that said, broadly, that the portrayal of Samus felt different than how the player in the past had internalized the character? I’ve heard and read the same feedback. Do I think it’s warranted or not? I’m not quite sure yet… I don’t yet believe that that is the driving factor to the performance of the game.”

  1. Metroid Other M is not a bad game, but it’s a very difficult one. I must say I was stuck in some parts of the game and I stopped playing it because I found no clue on how to solve the puzzles.

The old Metroids kinda helped you to solve a puzzle… this one doesn’t. The camera angles are not good, you can’t see where’s an enemy. The camera sometimes does not show the spot you’re supposed to see to continue your path (it happened to me in the volcano, trying to find a spot on a wall).

It’s a good game, but not for casual gamers.

Once you finish it with 100%, you just get more photos in your gallery and enable the Hard Mode, but you cannot show those achievements to your friends because the game has no online mode.

I’d rate it a 7.0 out of 10.0. Not a bad game, but not as good as I was expecting. :(

    1. I am sorry but Metroid other M is the most linear metroid there is to date.
It is very easy, linear, and gives you a lot of hints in what to do.
The other metroid games give you the sense of isolation and no hints what so ever!
(Metroid: other M is a good game nonetheless)

  2. ALMOST half a million!? That’s disappointing even for me. The game was great.
I believe that PART of the reason is the controls. Some players can adapt to a change like that. (Why? Not sure…It took me 5 minutes too do so…)

  3. I guess it’s the console by itself that cause the low sales. The gaming comunity looks at the Wii as a secondary console designed for chidren and housewives, which is not bad! Nintendo wasn’t pointing at the common hardcore gamer as his primary audience.

As for myself, I’m happy with as much Wii Hardcore games I can get. And yes, I’m still missing this one…

    1. If you see the Wii sales figures, the Wii IS the gaming community

And honestly the best caliber of games comes from Nintendo, when the company decides to fund another venture with Samus, I trust it will be very well made game and sales will reach a million very quickly.

I bought Other M, loved the game play, hated the plot.

  4. My most humble analysis of the poor sales is that Metroid Other M is a high explosive, HD, 5.1, roller coster-ride type like game on an SD, Dolby ProLogicII, not so high explosive, not so much roller coaster like console that is Wii.

To summon it up. The audience that IS Metroid plays Dead Space on one of the more “high explosive” more (for them) cutting edge (in the graphical realm that is) consoles that are out there. When they look at Other M they see dated old graphics that hides a very interesting game, that some of them still plays, but most of them just ignore. And for the rest, they play the more colourful Mario-games and dont care about the dark Metroid-saga.

    1. Same happened with No More Heroes and all the hardcore-games-the-like. Maybe it’s just that the Wii is not a console for the traditional hardcore gamer… Which leads me to think: will the traditional hardcore gamer play Kinect games?

  5. I had high hopes for this game. I even dodged all the negative comments about it. Once I played (and beat it), I couldnt help but agree with the people who hated it. To me, its the worse Metroid in the series. Way too many loopholes. A terrible story, horrible voice acting & bad camera. I also didnt like how this was more or a T&A Samus (also being a brat). No mention of Chozo or anything. Lets stick to Retro Studios & Intelegent Systems. No one else.

  6. Thank god i didnt have to waste 55$ ona a game i got for free thanks to homebrew :D but overall the game was simply amazing!

    1. agreed, Wii has kinda run it’s course and M pushing sofew titles only supports this.

Wii is the gaming community? Um, again take a look at Black Ops my friend. 5.6 million in what 24 hours? That’s where the hardcore gamers are..

      1. Hrm, 5.6 million huh, wow, will it reach 67.7 million(sales of wii-sports)?, and black OPS came out on 3 different consoles at the same time, not any in particular, in all that’s unimpressive, its a big title yes it is, but hardcore gamers are just the loudest group of the gaming community, but are by far the smallest.

  7. “Because it’s a great game. The consumer reaction because of the quality has been strong.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you keep telling yourself that Reggie, I’ll just go over here and play some Super Metroid.

But he is half right, the critical reception has been fairly strong, but I wouldn’t say the same for the reception from the fanbase.

  8. The game was WAY to easy, didn’t have the special end boss fight on HARD mode, had literally NO MUSIC to speak of and was lackluster in terms of new and interesting bosses/fights.

To me that was a failure of a Metroid game. I bought it because I am a die hard fan, but was disappointed in it overall.

  9. Maybe he should consider Mother 1+2+3 already. At least there’s a HUGE fanbase. Also, if they use a good marketing strategy (cause the Earthbound strategy was absolutely terrible) Then I think it would sell much better. Now what does this have to do with Metroid? Nothing, I just think they’re trying too hard to push the same 8 franchises that they’ve stuck to for the past 15 years. NOTHING’S CHANGED REGGIE! I think this country needs some Mother lovin’.

  10. It’s because the game followed from SuperMetroid, I know a lot of people who have went back to play SuperMetroid first before then getting other M.

  11. I loved Other M, and I’m glad I pre-ordered it and got it on the day it released. It was $55 well spent, in my opinion. In some of the comments above, I’ve seen complaints about the camera, but I have none. I liked it. The same goes for the story. The only complaint that I can think of is the concentration thing, and not having any energy drops. Well, sort of. Let me clarify. I liked that there were no drops, but I didn’t like it. I think what I’m trying to say is, I would have liked it more if they were just scarce, instead of non-existent. I liked how regaining your energy through concentration worked, but I would much rather it didn’t apply to missiles. At least, not all of them….maybe 5 or something, but not all of them.

    Did that make any sense?

  13. I wanted to try out the Other M, really, but I think it came out at the wrong time. First off, not only people traded their Wiis for a possible Wii2, or non-Nintendo consoles even, I also blame the announcement of the Nintendo 3DS. Used my Wii as my 3DS “Cash Cow”, knowing that the 3DS will be double the price here in Nigeria.

Also, with Kirby around, just like the other Nintendo consoles in the past, gamers are anticipating the end of the Wii console. That’s what had happened from the NES to the GameCube. Next Nintendo console, here we come! Metroid should’ve come sooner.

The 3rd problem’s what I can relate to: With an affordable game like “Metroid Prime Trilogy”, do I really need the Other M? Bad timing on both releases, Nintendo.

  14. Other than the previous Wii games I own, i’m basically playing lots more of 360 these days. I want more hardcore games. Only problem is, Nintendo, I really need your next ‘wii’ to be a graphical powerhouse. No, graphics isnt everything, but it sure helps, plus THIS time around, at least when 3rd parties make muliplatform games, they’ll look the same as apose to Modern Warfare or Black Ops on wii (though I honestly feel they play better on wii), the 360 versions are eyegasms. I know i’m off topic, lol. My bad ya’ll

  15. this guy gets on my nerves. some time ago, nintendo appeared to move forward by giving the best that they could to their consumers. Now all I see is this jack-wagon and his crusade to sell the most of what ever it is you call the wii today.

how bout you give into your fans reggie and give back a little bit. The lord knows we have supported you and all your controllers. Now how about some real content besides mario and the gang.

That might mean you have to spend money on more powerful machine parts and take a hit for a while like the rest of the folks trying to deliver the best products not the most affordable.

  16. I can’t believe Reggie is in denial
This Samus was an embarrassment to long time Metriod fans
Silent hunter in an isolated environment turned into something only 14 year old emo’s would like
Sakamoto couldn’t care less what fans wanted and made it to appeal to the least amount of people
I was waiting for a 2D Metriod but instead waisted my money on this game
I could only stomach 2 hours of boring cut scenes and cringe inducing dialog and troubling controls
But since Nintendo thinks Sak vision for Samus is awesome it looks like we will get another abomination

    1. Thats Nintendo for you, we don’t have an opinion about what we like, we like what they want us to like.

There could have been a 2d Metroid with unbelievable animation in the game play, combos, etc. Did they spend more on that commercial than they made in profit?

Sega should have did the same with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 game instead of the stiff Sonic movement we were delivered.

PEOPLE its safe to make 2d animation look really good instead of making a bad 3d version of a game.

  17. The focus Nintendo has been giving has been a promotion of making things easier and family friendly, the everybody system. There needs to be options though to switch up the difficulties and control schemes so that the games are seriously everybody games. Ever game doesn’t need to be for everybody though, and sometimes you don’t want to sit around and play a party game, or a stupid “Pong toss” game which is actually more fun to play in actual reality.

Reggie even says that there is really no need to make a new Wii JUST to make HD gaming possible.

What is this guy smoking before he says this crap?

All those versions of the NDS (Including the N3DS) and we can’t get Wii in HD? WTF!?

What Reggie is saying is “To hell with all the hardcore gamers that own our system, because (me, myself, and) I personally don’t care about that sort of thing.”

Forget about the fact that 3rd party characters would bring HD games to the Wii, never mind that.

The Facebook group “Wii-Demand” had to pull teeth to get Nintendo just to make a darn demo channel for Wii games. Wouldn’t you have wanted to have the option for companies appeal to buyers even further? Since the system is extremely limited on space though, they were only able to give us a demo channel for WiiWare games, but at least its something.

There are only a handful of good games on the Wii, and Mario Kart is one of them, regardless of being released awhile ago. So many developers think its a KID system, so they develop kiddie crap, and wonder why sales blow. Zak & Wiki was a point and click utilizing point and click that is mainly a PC genre for good reason. Spyborgs……….hmmmm something tells me Super Street Fighter 4 would have a bigger response. SF4 was released on a phone, and we can’t even get it. HA!

Hardcore Gamers, how about some Animal Crossing? Lets play a horse grooming game, or perhaps Cooking Mama…YIPPEE!!!!

HD would put the Wii in a position that the lame games can be made, but it wouldn’t matter to us because there would be plenty of hardcore games to enjoy as well. A lot of developers don’t even take advantage of the graphics Wii has since crap is generally accepted, why not make slop for the sake of profit? It doesn’t matter if gamers enjoy it or not, its a safe bet if there are no demos of the disc games to show that game sucks until its too late.

    Who would turn down HD?

    1. Releasing a new Home Console is completely different from releasing a Handheld Console. How many people would be willing to fork over 300 bucks for a new console that only adds HD capabilities? I’m sure not one of them. The Wii is fine as it is. Nintendo knows what they’re doing. Have you seen how successful they are? When they want their gamers to experience their games in HD, that time will come. For now, just get Component Cables. 720p is as close as you’re going to get to that HD you’re dying for.

      1. Blah Blah, do what it takes to so that we can have those higher quality visuals and capabilities for game development.

I’m glad you like the Wii as it is @ Anonymous, so if a new one comes out, you can stay with that while those that want more are able to upgrade.

Other than that, we just buy other consoles, and if motion is what someone is going for, and could careless about it being Nintendo, then the PS3 is the best route to go, because developers will be able to take advantage of the Wii’ish controls and the power of the PS3.

Now developers can make their games for multiple systems with motion, but they will be a heck of a lot better looking on the other systems, and controls won’t be extremely different on the PS3.

So I guess we do have the Wii HD already in the form of the PS3.

  18. Gamers, if you don’t want “better”, don’t come on here trying to argue with the people that want to see better from the Wii, so just stfu, play your lame games while we fight for improvements. Again, stfu if you don’t feel like a lot of the games could be better, because you might not know too much about quality.

  19. Sounds like Reggie didn’t learn much. Story wasn’t the only reason as to why people were disappointed. Ah well… keep making the same mistakes over and over again, eventually they’ll make more money with the right kind of propaganda behind them.
