Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has told online gaming publication Kotaku that gamers shouldn’t expect news of a successor to the Wii until they’ve sold at least 45 million consoles in the US.
“After we’ve reached an installed base of 45 million here in the U.S, we can have a conversation about the next generation.”
– Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime

All I can say is,
greedy and smart.
milking the money first, as always..
milking the money first, as always.
So… how close are they now? Could 45 million happen in a few months? A year? Five years? Are they waiting until then to begin to start developing the new system? I’d find it hard to believe they don’t already have some early planning… at the very least, they need to go HD to catch up with XBox and PS3.
And why would people keep buying the system if they know that each sale is just another step in the countdown to their Wii becoming obsolete? Kind of stupid for the guy to announce that kind of information.
They say that they start working on the successor to their current console as soon as the current console launches. So, I think that they pretty much have the designs finalized, and are only awaiting the publics reaction to it. Think of the 3DS. It was finished. Then, they showed it off, and made some minor changes based on gamers’ reactions. I think the only thing they changed was the color of the slide pad, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, I think what’s REALLY going to happen is they will show it off at the next E3, whether they make that goal of 45 million Wii’s sold or not.
Thats actually s**t…. it seems that we will never see a new one if they don’t sell that many then or they actually give in like they should.
Thats a lot of consoles!
It’s 15 million more than now, their greedy.
*sigh so this is how Nintendo will end I suppose
I think it’s smart.
No one wants to constantly buy consoles anyway.
Agreed w/ AwesomeGuy… I held off on buying an N64 because I was upset at how short-lived the SNES was, compared to the loooooong lifespan the NES enjoyed.
While the Wii’s lack of HD capability becomes more and more “obvious” as more time passes, I guess it’s good to know the console I own now will continue to be “current” for at least another year or two. Hopefully, after such a long run (and so many accessories, etc.), Nintendo does the right thing and allows all Wii equipment (controllers, games, etc.) to be compatible with the new console.
Consoles are a lot closer to behaving like PCs than ever before — and every time you get a new PC doesn’t mean you NEED a new keyboard, mouse and monitor. Get my drift?
and now some guy’s going to go out and buy the reaming amount of Wiis to be sold till 45 million, lol, though of course that’s impossible
At least that confirms my suspicion, and why I sold my Wii for the 3DS. It’s just the matter of rounding up a pending sales target, to be financially fit to get the new console rolling. (On the humor side, they want us to buy up to 45 million Wiis to score a prize?)
As long as it doesn’t take less than another 2 years before they get to 45 million in the U.S, then I’ll be happy. Right now, I’m not ready for even news of the next generation.
Funny Nintendo say 45 million, because the PS2 sold 41.12 million in the US! Maybe they’re waiting until the Wii breaks the PS2 sales record before they officially announce a successor to the Wii, that’s pretty smart on Nintendo’s behalf. They just want to get the most out of their current generation home console, and rightly so.
lol the ps3 didn’t even hit 45 million yet
I don’t think that’ll ever happen. Nintendo doesn’t milk console cows like Sony does. Sony still kept on fully supporting the PS2 well after the launch of the PS3 only because of the huge gamble the PS3/BD was and they (Sony) were using the PS2 as a back-up plan in case the BD went south against HD-DVD.
Meh…
Well everybody, GET TO WORK!!!
If you guys are willing to loan me $3 billion, I’ll buy those 15 milling right away.
Sorry, I meant “15 MILLION”.
Yeeeah….Lemme get back to you on that, lol.
15 million consoles later, Reggie: “The Wii 2 will be really expensive. If you want to know more we will need to sell 5 million more consoles.”
“And if you want to know the release date, you’ll have to buy 5 million more!”
Not gonna happen the Wii’s sales have been slowing continuously since last year/2008 how can they expect people to buy Wii’s when a large majority already own them, trying to appeal to everyone wont work as some people still cant afford Wii’s/don’t care about technology.
Probably gonna announce the successor next year@e3 or TGS and release in 2012
They basically told us that they’re already working on the successor. :/
That would be half of what we’ve already sold in four years. Half of four is two, obviously, and the Wii’s sales got a jump start as all consoles, or products for that matter, do when they are first released. I can see 45 million in three years.
K, it’s lyk this:
Nintendo is telling us that they ARE in fact working on a new console
BASICALLY, if you read between the lines, they are saying something lyk:
we are going to announce this at E3, if you want info on this before then, you’ll only get it if we sell 15 million more Wiis
OR, they are being sarcastic:
yah, good luck getting any info on that before E3, the only way we’d do that is if we sold 15 Million more
ether way, let’s just wait and see what happens
Jeez, couldn’t you have told us how many units have been sold?

After reading a couple of other articles I don’t trust the writers of this site anymore. I’d would like to see at least the entire paragraph to see the actual context of Reggie’s sentence and the actual question asked. The Wii has sold close to, if not more, 20 mil. units in four years so it’d take over 5 more years to reach the 45 mil unit figure that Reggie is claimed to have said.
If he truly said such thing he couldn’t have possibly be serious about it since it is an unrealistic expectation. Come on people, don’t believe at face-value everything you read in the internet, learn to research the source before getting all worked-up about claims like this.
This article is total FUD!
I don’t trust you either. I can’t possibly take anything you say at face value. You say you read two other articles. I demand to know which articles you specifically read so I get full context. In conclusion, you’re total FUD.
Troll.
