Nintendo 3DS: Capcom Say Gamers Have Moved On From Portable Consoles

Capcom Interactive president and COO, Midoori Yuasa has told British trade publication MCV that gamers have moved on from the DS and PSP and are spending the majority of their time playing games on cell phones.

“The casual gamer that used to play on the PC and the hardcore gamer that used to play on a dedicated gaming portable now plays on their smartphone.”

“The iPhone and larger smartphone markets are extremely important to Capcom as, like no device before, smartphones have the potential to become a universal game platform,” she added. “We have a lot of stuff on the horizon for both hardcore and casual gamers, so 2011 is shaping up to be huge on Capcom’s mobile front.”

  1. Ok. So a device whose main purpose is calling people is now their game console? Uh… the games on iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad are all mediocre casual games. :/

  2. Have they tried to play any game on the iDevice? I mean, touch screen controls are rediculous.

Now, Androids with keyboards, that’s another story.
The Moto Cliq is a great gaming device with it’s d pad on the LEFT side instead of beiing on the right.

  3. the most complex game I can play on an iDevice is Robot Unicorn Attack and it is a two-button game…smartphone games’ purpose is to do something when it is the only thing you have at your reach, I’d rather play a million times more with an game boy color rather than with smartphone, fact

conclusion: the Capcom president knows CRAP

I hope they do well selling .99$ games….

  4. Like other posters have said, the iPhone is a terrible device to play games on. The touch controls are dodgy to say the least, and I would not even spend £0.59 on some of the cheaper games, they are mediocre and poor quality. I will still be getting my 3DS, this article is complete rubbish, the smartphone will never replace the portable console.

  5. To me, most of the Ipod games are exactly what they should be, $1 gimmicks. Cool, but only for a few minutes on the road. The 3DS is answering this, by making it appeal to on the go people when they’re bored on the road while giving us really quality games. Which is why I omitted getting an Ipod touch for Christmas in favor of saving for a 3DS.

  6. It’s not true. I have a ds and psp as well as all consoles. My ds gets more play time then the ps3, 360, and psp. I love the ds. I think the only reason they say this is because capcoms sales for ds have been declining. I love the ace attorney games but megaman was just the same game over and over with a paper thin story

  7. I’d have to disagree. Phones are HORRID for gaming. They do not have the capabilities a dedicated portable console does. I’d much rather play on a DS Lite than a friggin smartphone. They’re going to seriously waste their time…

  8. mobile phone games to me will always be just an arcade-ish experience and i’ve yet to play any mobile game with a true full storyline . there good games but nowhere close to what at least i consider hardcore the portable consoles will have have my vote on portable gaming but the other problem i see is that portable gaming lacks the power i really look for in games (physics, graphics and just overall complexity to games ) portable is great but lets not lie. we do have the technology to make it better

And they moved on huh? Is that the reason why they dedicated handhelds sell more than consoles and capcom is putting street fighter, resident evil, megaman on the 3ds right away?

Also capcom didnt say this. The vp of MOBILE games from capcom said this

    A very bias’d person

  10. Hahahaha no. Maybe that’ll happen with the Playstation Phone but no way right now.

I have a question. Why is it that all these big names in gaming: companies, game designers, and big gaming publications all claim that phones are the future of gaming? Sure they make more money but only because everybody doesn’t want to be bored while waiting in line.

Imagine trying to play OOT on a phone. If that becomes easily possible that’s when I’ll admit that phones are a legitimate source for gaming.

The sony ericson xtera phone can play select psp and select mini games. Because the gaming compnent isnt even as powerful as the psp.

Mostly the psphone/xteria phone is just an android phone
