In case you missed it yesterday Nintendo of America Director of Public Relations Marc Franklin confirmed that the Wii U will not be able to play Gamecube titles. However, you’ll still be able to play all your classic Wii games on the Wii U. All your Wii related peripherals such as your Wii Remotes, Nunchucks and Classic Controllers etc will all work with Nintendo’s new system.
so no gamecube controller support?
Shoot. Well, I guess I’ll have to keep my Wii.
How long has this new comment thing been around?
Not sure but it’s cool, you can leave comments
Hmm, I see Virtual Console coming for Wii U. That’s got to take a long time to download a full GCN game though.
Well, I guess I’ll be keeping my Wii then…
That won’t matter, Thats what I have my Wii for.
no. gamecube. SUPPORT?! this does not make me happy, if i can’t use my gamecube controller to play smash 4, i’m gonna be FURIOUS.
hey nintendo, if stupid sony can continue supporting the PS2, clearly you can continue to support gamecube computability. just saying.
Um Sony supports the PS2 on the PS3 because its one generation behind. The difference is that Gamecube is two generations behind.
ps3 also supports ps1 games
……..wow……you will use the new controller then for the next smash…it’s not that big of a deal.
No it’s a huge deal if u can only use 1 Wii U controller PER SYSTEM! Hardcore fighters are all about control and now I gotta go buy four Classic controllers & give up my 4 GC controllers? I don’t like it :(
Real Smash players don’t play with 4 people.
Fail! real smash players smash all their friends who try to beat them.
The Wii U will probably have support for more than one Wii U controller. And I personally prefer using the Wii remote on its side for super smash bros.

Sony stopped supporting PS2 support after the first wave of PS3’s…. too expensive. PS3’s don’t support PS2 games anymore. Unless you mean controller. No one says the controllers don’t work yet, so keep that hope alive!
Actually Sony stopped supporting PS2 games on most newer systems I believe
I can foresee Gamecube games going to the Virtual Console then, seeing as the Wii had N64 games on its Virtual Console and was backwards compatible with Gamecube I think this will be the same but 1 generation on.
Sony did the same with PS3, didn’t they? Oh, Game Cube, I miss you already.
Meh. Still have both my Wii and my GameCube, so I imagine I’ll get by.
Is it the same with the gamecube controllers? A lot of people use them on various wii games like Smash Bros Brawl an Mario Kart Wii
Hopefully they release adaptors for them. The Wii U has four USB ports, so maybe they’ll bring out a GC controller to USB adaptor?

Did you people honestly expect Nintendo to support two previous generations AND provide a console with its own list of software?
gba did
What! but if thats the case il have to buy all my games again!!!!
@Raymond!: If you have a PS3Slim you can’t play PS2 games. And also, PS2 is only 1 generation, GC is 2. So to make your comparison work PS3 should play PS1 games, wich it also doesn’t.
Don’t they have some PS1 games avaliable to purchase by download?
PS3 does play PS1 games
the PS3 does play PS1 games, and can download PS1 games from the PSN.
Does it play PS1 games from the original PS1 disc, or do you need to access it through an online store?
The older models did.
Hmm.. probably we’ll need download it in the virtual console, like we do with classic games. This ‘ll take a several minutes with my f**** internet conection D:
Why should WiiU support the two previous generations? ‘-‘
This is horrible news. Now I can’t play Smash Bros. (or other Wii games that utilize Gamecube controllers) the way it is meant to be played. My question is, can you play Wii games with the new U controller?
I am not pleased! Flip a table!
That avatar….I LOL’d
Meh. I was always a stickler when it comes to playing games on their proper consoles. I play Gamecube games on my Gamecube only, gba on my gba, etc.. So this doesn’t bother me and as long as the Wii U supports the classic controller pro, there’s no reason to fret over the lack of controller options for games like SSB.
But you have to have the classic controller connected to the wii remote. Which is idiotic.
glade i still have my gamecube
Me too!
This sucks. Guess I won’t be trading in my Wii next year.
ok meh,
Just give me Wii games on my Wii U and i’ll be happy. I Plan on getting a few Wii titles and not even Playing them till the WiiU comes out. Any suggestions on what Wii titles to stock up on?
Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2, TLoZ: Twilight Princess, TLoZ: Skyward Sword, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Metroid Prime 3
Just to name a few.
This was expected.
If they introduce Gamecube to the Virtual Console, this will be forgiven.
Hm, it is a shame that the Gamecube games won’t be playable on it. I guess this also means no Gamecube controller support. Maybe they will eventually release a Wii U Gamecube controller that hooks to the Wii Remote or the New Controller. I don’t know, we haven’t held the New Controller yet, so we don’t know how comfortable it is to play a game like Smash with it.
Perhaps I should try out Brawl with the classic controller to better understand it.
I REALLY hope that Gamecube controllers will be compatible(although I doubt it) else I hope this new controller will be suitable for playing Smash Bros.
Goddamnit. I’m more annoyed at only being able to use one Wii U controller, so multiplayer confirmed for sucking there.
They better unveil some alternative, more traditional controller. CC sucks. CC Pro is pretty good looking though.
@Some Guy: And how is having the CC Pro attached to a wiimote any diiferent than having a GC controller attached to the Wii console itself? At least with the wiimote there is the freedom of being untethered from the actual system.
CC Pro feels different to the GC controller, I assume.
Ah, damn. Now I have to keep my Wii, unless of course they offer GameCube games on Wii U’s virtual console.
well, that’s not good news. that means i’ll have to keep my Wii just for playing GameCube games.
So, does that mean we’ll be getting Gamecube games on Virtual Console? It’s not the best thing ever (paying twice for the same game is pretty stupid to be honest), but I guess it was expected, backwards compatibility with two gens was too much for Nintendo.
Eternal Darkness. One of my top three favorite games. Not compatible with the new system.
And wow, still all the optimists! “hey, that’s cool, it’s all good, so what?!”
*face in palm*
it’s ok, I’m keeping my Wii anyways n.n
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oh well my parents probably won’t let me get it anyway but still
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
if you guys are so deeply upset over this, why not just use your gamecube/buy a new one/keep your wii? you can get gcs for $25 now :|
doesn’t bother me, I’ll get a portable hard drive for the WIi U, so I can put the Gamecube games on there, I’ll just sell off my Wiis :)
FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
i guess you can say wii failed…

Ah heell naw. This means, that like the nintendo 3ds, they’re gonna make another console that have new games on it that won’t work on the wii? Smh. Fail. If this is their marketing method, then Nintendo are gonna go bust quickly. NO ONE is gonna go out and buy around 10 of stupidly similar consoles that work the same but just have diff games available. Stupid Wii..
WTF I HATE U NINTENDO WHO DO U THINK U R GET A LIFE AND STOP MAKING FKING CONSOLES B/C YOU ARE IDIOTS AND U SHUD GO DY IN HELL I AINT BYING UR CONSOLES IDIOTS DONT MAKE FUCKING EXCLUSIVE GAMES, DNT U DAR
