Nintendo Wii U: Wii U Will Be 50% More Powerful Than Sony’s PlayStation 3

Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii U will be 50% more powerful than Sony’s PlayStation 3 console according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. Bhatia has spoken to a number of key third party developers who are currently producing games for the console. All the developers questioned stated that the Wii U has 50% more processing power compared to the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

“Some of the developers we spoke to indicated to us that the console will have 50% more processing power compared to the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.”

    1. You’re going to be waiting a while. If Sony and MS stick to their 10-year plan, as they’ve repeatedly said they would (even despite the fact that Nintendo would likely not), then you won’t see a new Microsoft console until late 2015, and you won’t see a new PlayStation until late 2016. By then, Nintendo will likely have another console on the rise, since Nintendo sticks to the 5-year plan, and always has, historically (with exacting precision, no less).

The Wii U will not compete with Sony and Microsoft’s next offering, the successor to the Wii U will.

      1. In case you haven’t heard, Sony and Microsoft aim to launch their successor consoles in 2014. Microsoft has stated they’re willing to go as early as 2013 to introduce something, but the guarantee that would simply be a 360 with Kinect built in.

        1. Oh yeah? And where are you getting this info from? Because I haven’t heard it announced on any official sources yet. And until I see it printed as quote from Sony / Microsoft themselves, I’m not believing anything.

  1. I would love to see Nintendo on top, but lets be real here: sooner or later a wild PS4 will appear and hyperbeam the defenseless little Wii U. D:

  2. I’m so getting a Wii U, regardless of what Sony and Microshaft come out with in the future, all they can really do is just increase the processing power and put in a better graphics chip and copy Nintendo, it will still be HD…

  3. Well the xbox 360 and PS3 were 100% more powerful than Wii, and were in HD. So I think the Wii U will do just fine since they will have quite the early startoff.

  5. Cool but console spec wars are really a thing of last gen. Games, games and games. Oh and other stuff like Netflix matter as well.

    1. Really? People still give the Wii shit for being weaker than the Xbox, and I doubt it’s going to change if PS4/XBox720 are stronger than Wii U

      1. True but at the end of the day its the games. DReamcast failed as it didn’t have any support. PS3 is more powerful than both Wii and Xbox but I play the latter way more. Only real problem with the Wii (in my eyes) was that the shooters didn’t play well on it ala the nunchuck and more importantly it’s online setup (the friend code/no mic)

  6. Yeah but lets be real here, you all know that in about 2 to 5 years sony’s gonna release the PSU and low and behold it’ll be the same damn thing as the WiiU, just with a big blue ball on top. Oh except it wont work nearly as well as nintendo’s version and will be retardedly overpriced.. ya know… cause that’s sony…

    Long live Nintendo.

  7. Thats a lot but what about the playstation vita? and also…
does anyone know what the Kid Icarus: Uprising release date is and if we can preorder is yet? does anyone know?

  8. isn’t that like.. more then PC?!?! Hm, maybe Wii U will be the strongest console of this next generation

  9. I call bullshit. I mean, I believe it’s more powerful, for sure, and therein lies the problem: I think it’s more powerful. Nintendo would have no problem releasing a console with the tablet functionality and EQUAL power to the PS3; it would do well with even that. But I seriously think that, because of the tablet requiring more processing power to stream media too, I think Nintendo would want to at least have more impressive visuals, AND have that functionality, and I doubt 50% more processing power could accommodate that. I’m inclined to think this “analyst” is off his tits.

These analyst were completely wrong with everything they said about the Wii U prior to it’s unveiling, where even one analyst said Nintendo would NOT debut a new console at all. In short: they’re idiots. Plus, the line where they said it was 50% more powerful than “the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.” Really? It’s 50% stronger than both? Because XBOX360 and PS5 aren’t equal in processing power, so Wii U can’t be equally more powerful than both. The XBOX360 is less powerful, so it would have to be MORE than 50% for that console. Sounds like a load of thrown-together BS if you ask me.

    1. Lol it has a r770 in it which was made for two monitors! It’s not even being taxed with the wiiu pad the top resolution is 2600x something.

Seriously the thing is actualy more than P more powerful since it does run games at 1080 at 60fps instead of 15-30fps on it’s top games.

Then it has tech features the ps3 could even dream of like not just 7-8 spus we are talking 48-500 spus like chips in the gpu that can run code.

Yes it’s great at physics. Crytek has there engine on it now! They are putting the extras in it so it can use the full power of the wiiu. A lot closer to pc gaming. Epic has started also with the port. I believe also. Id wants to see the community first lol.

Also the ps3 being hugely more powerful is a myth other wise they would not have put a rsx in there. Also some thing so much more powerful does not take 4 years to reveal that power just to get 30 fps. The cell was great hype tech many ate it up. The computer world moved on every one knows the r700 ati cards crush the cell and rsx together by it’s self.

Look up computing shaders they actualy have cache too which the spus don’t.

  10. I love this simply because Sony has already stated they’re not sinking as much money on new Tech as they did with the PS3. This means The PS4 won’t be as comparatively powerful to the WiiU or new XBox as the PS3 was to the Wii and 360.

  11. I really don’t think there will be a new Xbox since the 4 person team who designed it resigned from Microsoft. Sony on the other hand stated that they were in progress on the new system. I will be in doubt with the Wii U until they actually say that it will be a multicontroller platform with a huge rectangle and a 6×6 touch screen on it….

  12. Being a fan of Nintendo,I kinda dislike the fact that they keep saying that the new console is more powerful than the other consoles. Well of course it is and it should be. I mean it is next gen. It is like comparing the Gamecube to the Playstation 1 and any next gen to a previous gen. Sure this is great for now, but if the next gen’s for Sony and Microsoft are 100% more powerful than the Wii U, what is everyone going to be saying then? I just hope the third party doesn’t abandon the Wii U and still make some exclusives.

    1. Lest you forget, they’re impressing this fact simply because the original Wii was NOT more powerful than the current consoles out at the time. It wasn’t even more powerful than the previous (original) XBOX, let alone the 360. It also wasn’t a huge step up from the GameCube, either. Evidence to that fact is that majority of Wii games look only marginally better than most GameCube games (compare the Metroid Prime games, and see what I mean).

So yes, they’re impressing the fact that it’s super powerful because it’s definitely something that people noticed and looked down on the original Wii for.

  13. lmao, what? I’m not sure what “50% more powerful” means. I could say I’m 50% stronger than the guy next to me, but thats a rather vague statement to throw a number on.

But at least more people confirming its more powerful than the PS3 and 360 gives me hope on this thing.

  14. Wow thats sad all y’all Are forgetting. Something since its going be powerful then the ps3 and judging. From the controller its going to be expensive. As hell or. there only going be a limit made on it release date like how the wii was just saying

    Cheers

    1. And? PS3 was way more expensive than anything else on the market at the time, and people still bought it. This thing is more powerful, and it has many more possibilities, AND it has strong third-party support… I’m thinking it’ll do just fine.

        1. Power is not everything, but having games still look like they did 10 years ago is not my idea of fun. True, graphics don’t make the game, but the certainly help… especially if you’re not living under a rock and have played games with better graphics before.

Case in point: I love many SNES games, and I can still play a lot of them because of the gameplay and fun-factor. However, they represent the pinnacle of graphic power for their timeframe, and the graphics fit the game type PERFECTLY.

However, when you think of game types like first-person shooters, you think “realistic / life-like.” That being said, the original Wii simply cannot produce graphics on-par with what that genre demands. Same goes for 3d RPGs: they are often vast, sprawling worlds with intense special effects for spells and such. Why have sub-par graphics if the technology to have stunning high-definition graphics is cheaply available?

I would be more than happy with a Nintendo system + tablet functionality + XBOX360 specs, but Nintendo has delivered something even more powerful than that; more powerful than an XBOX360 + original Wii combined, which spells potential for games with not only great graphics, but a lot of new functionality that isn’t available on any other console or platform to date.

And THAT’S why it would be worth it to buy this machine; not for graphics alone, but for ALL the areas it improves upon: graphics, gameplay, third-party support (good luck continuing to play Wii with no third, and soon no first party support), better online, microphone for voice chat during online play, camera for character customization (put your face on a fighter in a fighting game? Yes please.), custom tablet functionality (easily draw custom designs on a fighter, character, or car? Yes please!). The possibilities are virtually endless, and worth the price in my opinion.

  18. Interesting… Though I wonder how much of that increase is going towards the new controller? Also, is the controller simply relaying video, or is it actually doing some processing of its own?

    1. It’s likely not just relaying video. I mean, I can see how they might do that and just feedback the touchscreen data (i.e. gestures, touch points, etc.) back to the console for it to process the info, but then it would have to modify the feed and send it right back, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense logistically. But who knows, I’m not a technical architect. Just for what it’s worth, it seems to me like the controller would have some sort of low-power processing to account for the visuals that the console streams to the screen, so as to limit the amount of reciprocating between the device and the console and keep latency issues at bay.

    1. I do too. Graphics have always been more of a welcome attraction than a major point of games to me, but this is really impressive.

  21. i thought it may be 10%-25% more powerfull 50% is alot ,wow nintendo steped their game up,so cod and highpowered engine games would be the best to play kn the wii u?

    1. Indeed. Much smoother frame rate, better graphics, and added tablet functionality for all sorts of cool things (I’m sure they’ll likely do some very killer things with it; I can already think of dozens myself). That definitely puts the Wii U ahead of any of the other systems out there. Even PCs, despite their ability to do ONE thing better: graphics.

  24. Does Nintendo even need to compete with Sony and Microsoft? Everyone I know either has a PS3 and a Wii or a Xbox 360 and a Wii. So as long as the Wii U still provides an alternative, entertaining and low price form of game play then people will still buy it. It’s Sony and Microsoft who are the ones who have to try hard to fight for consumers money.

  25. I have to thank you for the efforts you have put in penning this website.

I’m hoping to check out the same high-grade blog posts by you in the future as well. In truth, your creative writing abilities has encouraged me to get my own, personal website now ;)
