Animal Crossing developer Katsuya Eguchi, a Nintendo veteran and producer on upcoming Wii U projects, has spoken to Kotaku about an unannounced Metroid title for the Wii U. Whilst it appears as though Eguchi was simply musing about the title, it’s extremely likely that there is a new Metroid game in the works at Nintendo. Well, he clearly knows more about the game than we do. What would you like to see from a new Metroid title on Wii U?
“I can’t give you any details now,” he said, “but I’m sure there will be a new Metroid release making use of the new controller, not just to control Samus and her ship but also to give the player a new source of information. Maybe the player is looking at the screen but has the information that they need to defeat the enemy in their hands.” Maybe you could hold the Wii controller up to the screen and scan your enemy, I suggested. “You could look through the screen and scan your enemy and find where it’s weakspot is.”

I’m buying one now. Ownage Confirmed
Well i think the Wii U sucks its just stupid as all nintendo has done is that they combined they ways of a DS and Wii and put em together why not just leave the wii as it is.Just create a new update for the wii and give us a new Channel Menu with the same channels just upgraded background. And invent more better channels say like Mario Channel where you can watch Maria Episodes Or Donkey Kong.Just invent some better Channels. And please for crying out loud hurry up and put these amazing SNES Titles Equinox, Bubsy, Starwing, Illusion Of Time and Super Aleste on the Wii Shop Channel..And Also Make The New Metroid Game On The Original Wii as its perfectly good enough to be played on the wii..And if it goes on Wii U then im not going to be very happy and i dont think many people will buy it or the console cause.1. Its a Stupid Idea Of a Console.2. No One will be able to get the hang of it and will give neck ache’s as i know i do wen i play the DS and the 3DS was also Stupid idea as loads of people have become severely ill cause of the 3DS and as i say you ruined the DS franchise with that monstrosity the 3DS and now you want to ruin the best selling console of all time The Wii not a good idea is it.And one last thing When in gods name are you going to actually give directors the rights to make a Metroid and Zelda Film cause you let directors make The Mario Bros with Danny Devito playing the role of Mario. And you also did Pokemon Movies so whats stopping you from allowing directors make Metroid or Zelda Films the film industry needs something new something fresh like Zelda and Metroid please allow them as thousands of fans do want to see those games made into films..

After reading the first line of your reply Anonymous, All I can say to you is, Quit sucking that dick we all know as your mom’s that she stole from your step dad’s sister who now hides in the attic because she kicked him off the couch for now paying rent, and give the new Wii a chance before you say it sucks.

Im sick having to buy nintendo systems just to play cirtain games they need to just make a new metroid for the DS
A remake of Super Metroid would be amazing!!!!
Yeah they should Remake Super Metroid And make it the same way they made Metroid Prime
NO.
An exact Super Metroid Remake for 3DS would be perfect. First person on a Metroid just doesn’t work.
I really hope that it’s a first person perspective game. Other M was such an awful experience, I just want to go back to something like in Prime.
Metroid other M got me into Metroid. I want to see at least one more game like other M
your going to be amazed
play#2/Echoes
Hell, Metroid is a platform game, it should stay that way. Though Prime is great too!
We all remember Metroid as a platform. It is such a wonderful Game.
Surely we want new aspects and controllers for the stimuli. Yet I wouldn’t mind going back to retro style for the love of the Old Skills!
Other M was an amazing game. I love the fact they gave Samus a personality. In the Prime series she was just a mindless robot which I didn’t like. I mean the Prime series was really fun in terms on gameplay and everything I just wished that they had given Samus a personality.
Ooh watch it there buddy. There are plenty of people that’ll tear anyone with that opinion apart. Thankfully I’m not one of them. I don’t see Other M as “amazing” but I don’t see what everyone’s bitching about either. Prime Hunters on DS was far worse.
Oh and Mac, NO! We have an entire trilogy of first-person Metroid games. We need a break from that formula. I say, just take Other M, fix every element from the game that DIDN’T work, and basically improve the mechanics of it. The gameplay style from Other M is fine. It just needs some polishing.
Other M hurt my brain too much… I played it till the end though. and now I can say quite in quite an experienced manner I didn’t like it. while it was a good game it supported too many sexist notions to simply be dismissed. also with that dodge function I was practically invincible. then there’s the more obvious nonsense, but I wont get into that today, or ever. as long as it’s attracting new fans I can’t complain… too much
Agreed, Other M had it’s faults, but it was still a good game. I didn’t even try playing Prime Hunters as I got a demo cartridge with my very first DS and I would rather roll around in a cesspit. I hope they do make another Other M style game, as it did do what Metroid was originally, it just added that third dimension with the third person gameplay that was refreshing for a Metroid game… Still, I hope they don’t change the backtracking to areas, as that is a Metroid characteristic which is renowned in the gaming commuinty…
Yes i agree with you they should make a new prime game
Metroid: Other M
It was a F****G KicK ASS Game! I’m so proud of Nintendo for Releasing such Romance for the old Platform style in 3d. They really know how enchant their fans.
Don’t we Love Nintendo!
Yes! I would love to see a return of the type of gameplay from the Prime trilogy. Scanning and FP POV and…and…NO WIMPY SAMUS! XD
Maybe the player is looking at the screen but has the information that they need to defeat the enemy in their hands, AWESOME! i cant wait for the release, and hope the new controller can give us a new experience in the game! Like!
That’d be legit! They need a Metroid game at launch. Seriously, they really need a strong launch lineup for this system. It’s a very precarious situation.
Retro studios, please. Thank you.
I wasn’t the biggest critic of Other M like most people seem to be, but I’d be lying if I said using the screen to scan wouldn’t be a step up from pointing the Wiimote. If you can move while doing it or aren’t stuck in a high-action scenario where you would use it, all the better.
All of those ideas simply reek of Retro Studios. I don’t care if it’s Retro or another development team, just make an AWESOME Metroid, not just a good one. The standards are WAY high this time around.
awsome i love metroid serious hopefully it will continue the metroid corruption stry line remember the end it was a 2 b continue with a new archenemy
Hope it will be alot better then Metorid other M. That game was horrible in the Metroid collection…
Metroid Other M wasn’t horrible, it was a fine addition to the metroid franchise.
all the games are coming out for Wii U… but I don’t want one :(
I’d like to see another FPS Metroid. It doesn’t necessarily have to have “Metroid Prime” in the title because that story is pretty much wrapped up (unless they’d like to expand on that final cutscene at the end of Corruption when you get 100% pick-ups) but I’d like to see a new FPS Metroid.
it better be a sequel to fusion, but knowing nintendo it will be in between other games
Fantastic ideas, and I hope they’re a half-hearted tease at something that is actually in-progress in some form or another right now. If this console sees a Metroid game sometime in 2012 (i.e. within 6 months of launch), it’ll surely rocket the console into the sales stratosphere.
That is, of course, it finds itself a genre to stick to. Trying to blend 2 genres is almost never a good idea. Either make it 3rd person perspective, like Gears of Ware and Mass Effect, first-person like Metroid Prime, or all out 3d adventure a lá Mario 64. My vote is for the second or third options. As long as it’s done well, I don’t see why a Twlight Princess-style Metroid game couldn’t work. But they have to get the gameplay mechanics as perfect as they did with Ocarina of Time, for example.
Not to mention they have to recapture that erie feeling that the SNES Super Metroid perfected: that feeling that you really are all alone, and that at any moment, something could burst through a door, wall, or floor and cause you do practically brick in your pants.
Puzzle solving needs to make a return from that era, too. The free-roaming nature of the SNES game was, and still is, epic. To this day, not a game in it’s genre rivals it. It did everything perfectly, and every time you play it, it’s still a fresh, fun game and feels like the first time.
I suggest Nintendo go over that game with a fine-tooth comb, pick apart what worked so well, and replicated that in a newer, 3d space. Get the art style down perfectly; get the music just right; get the gameplay mechanics tight and fluid; and whatever you do, keep Samus silent. She works better as a silent hero, like Link. It adds to her mystique, and to the overall mood of the game.
Truer words about Metroid have not been spoken.
If there’s one thing I know, it’s video game dynamics; what makes or breaks a video game. It’s more than just personal preference. I’m a visual designer, and with that comes a lot of analyzing of everything, not the least of which is video games. I can’t, to this day, play a video game without noticing even simple things like “this menu item should be first before this one” or “the texture color of that car should be a more desaturated color” or something simple like that.
So it stands to reason that when I play all Metroid games post-SNES era, I notice a wide range of things that just seem like they weren’t nearly as refined. This is part of the reason why I’d love to see a new Metroid game b a 2d HD version, kind of like what they did with the Mario games on 3ds and Wii recently (2d, but with 3d models, etc.) and the Street Fighter HD Remix which was more of just a remake than a new game.
I think maybe some of the elements I mentioned worked better in a 2d space than in 3d, so I’d rather see them make an excellent HD 2d Metroid game, than make an “okay” 3d HD Metroid game. If they go 3d, I just hope they get those elements right this time. I think a first-person shooter would take away that charm; we can’t even see Samus, which is one thing that takes away from the game. Especially seeing the progressing of upgrading her weapons and suit.
Let’s spend more time talking about an AC release date and less time talking about a game that is years away.
Sorry, I am frustrated. Lol. :(
IMO, The Prime trilogy was one of the high points of gaming history, so just from that standpoint I think they should go back to something akin to that gameplay style. Hopefully Retro is on board with the project.
As far as Other M goes… I hated the health and missile regeneration, the story, the controls (oh God), and most of all how Samus was portrayed. A hideous mockery of an iconic video game character. I won’t even buy this Wii U Metroid title if it is like Other M. And that’s coming from a pretty hardcore Metroid fanboy in case you couldn’t tell already. :P
Dude Metroid Other M’s controls and where just fine in my eyes and the gameplay was almost as good as any Prime game, Metroid Other M was awsome gameplaywise, but I won’t defend the potrail of Samus that I have to agree with you.
I think other m was great and would play it again. I’d rather have a samus who has a background story and a personality than a mindless robot who does’nt say one word (Master Chief). She still kicked *** and alot of fanboys forget that samus is a woman. Besides, who’s the hot cosplay girl… I’m soo drooling right now lol
I thought Other M was ok as well, I’ll gladly play it again and again and again and again, as for the controls, didn’t see any problems
Mmmm… if Metroid comes to the Wii U, I may actually buy one. I was not intending to do that.
I look forward to seeing an announcement, Nintendo seem to be quiet over Metroid these days. I would love two Metroid games to be released at the same time on the Wii U and the 3DS. Imagine the graphics for a Wii U Metroid game, hopefully a first person Retro Studios game since they said they’re taking a break from Metroid when they made Donkey Kong.
Announcement please Nintendo, soon!
This article makes me salivate.
i’d like to see a follow-up to fusion. that would be great and frankly, i’d not want team ninja involved with this one after what happened with other M. not to say it was a terrible game, i thought it was good but it just wasn’t A metroid game.
the voice acting didn’t bother me as much as the poor characterisation, scripting and depiction of samus by sakamoto. yes give samus a personality, but i thought he went about it in the wrong way.
as for the gameplay, i think it should go back to the 3rd person, side scrolling style of super metroid but incorporate some first -person mechanics of prime.
i personally don’t care who makes this one, as long as it’s not team ninja.
Team Ninja didn’t write the story it was Yoshai Sakamoto’s Idea to potray Samus Aran as a whiney @$%. THe only thing Team Ninja worked on where the graphcis and gameplay.

New Metroid? OMG YES, but I really hope it’ll be an FPA like the primes. The scanning with the Wii U controller was something a friend of mine already suggested (althought it’d be very big). I don’t know if you’d still use the Wii-mote for main controllers or not. Because if you don’t, it’d be hard changing to the other one to scan…
Metroid in HD sounds like an epic ‘hardcore’ game.

Samus doesn’t need a personality. She was, for the biggest, most iconic games in the series (the NES and SNES games) a silent hero, which goes with the mood and theme of the game, and adds to her mystique. Give her a personality, and now she’s just another person… with a “neato” suit. It’s her LACK of such a human quality that makes her such a super-human character, and also allows each player to conceptualize their own view of her, rather than make her so blatant and two-dimensionally tangible.
You hit the nail on the head man. Developers would never try to make Link have heart felt confessions in a game to give him more “personality”.

i love metroid, but i hate first person games.i played the prime games through, but was really glad to see what they did with other m.it didn’t work out as well as i had hoped for,but i still though it was a step in the right direction.i liked the story lines of the prime games but felt they were trying too hard to compete with the halo series.i like what the guy above said about a twighlight-style metroid, but another first person shooter holds no intrest to me.
i would like to see a successful multi player with another other m game. i would LOVE to see another super metroid remake, but i would like to see another team ninja contribution game for metorid. i felt like other m asnt what i expected. but i feel it def. had potential. but i did appreciate the multiplayer mode on echoes but it just didnt live up to what i expected. i feel with the graphics from othe m and the boards, it would be def a good seller for another version of the other m. story line could follow something new to present for good game play.
Coupling this thread with the one where Paul Gale from Retro Studios is quoted as developing a project for the Wii U that “everyone wants us to do” (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-20-metroid-prime-dev-making-wii-2-game), makes it a pretty safe bet that it is a first-person Metroid game that they are working on.
Oh, a new Metroid title? Sweet! Nintendo better make this one of Super Metroid quality, I’m feeling that fans aren’t happy with Nintendo ignoring the fact that this is Samus’s 25th Anniversary as well, not just Link’s.
As for what it should be exactly, I don’t mind personality, just don’t make her character like Other M’s.That game may have brought me into the series, but once I got the Trilogy, Other M suddenly became inferior. But keep her silent, the Trilogy did a good job expressing her thoughts with her body language. But I would prefer an action/adventure Metroid, akin to the Metroids of old and Other M. The FPS genre is too crowded with CoD and Halo fanatics; and the return to her roots would step up difficulty. I found the Trilogy to be easy once I got a hang of the controls.
But who knows? Maybe Nintendo will perfect the blending of the two styles. They already did that with Mario, and Sega achieved that blend with Sonic as well. But if the control style of Other M returns, PLEASE Nintendo, allow us to move in 1st person, that immobility made the concept not flow and clunky.
I might buy the wii u in the future as in a year or two after it comes out
I think they should remake super metroid with the new HD hardware of the wiiu. Then they could add some stuff to utilize the gamepad like put the map on it or use it to change weapons. But if they make it an FPS then they could use the gamepad to scan stuff like they did for ZombiU and Prime 3 for the Wii.
Wow that was odd. I just wrote an incredibly long comment
but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t show up.
Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again.
Anyway, just wanted to say superb blog!
